My Spreadsheets bring all the boys to the yard...

I know this doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement of the gameplay offered in Elite, but as a massive dork, it is intended as an endorsement of the depth of detail:

I have almost as much fun doing out-of-game in-game nerdery - planning out ship and equipment specs, gathering and cataloguing in-game information on spreadsheets or in SQL databases, and organizing and charting everything - as I do playing the game. That's not really a critique of how the game presents this info (to be fair though, it generally doesn't currently); because I would do - and have done - this sort of thing in games that present things much more cleanly. I just appreciate and enjoy the vast wealth of various forms of relevantly useful data there are in the game.

It's great. Cataloguing it is great.

Now if I could just find a way to make all my ships have shield and hull values that are multiples of five...

ED is a game you can play without nothing or with Elastic, mongodb and what not.. rounding up the shields to multiples of five seems a bit OCD to me, but I wish you luck with it!

I've played around with Spreadsheets and an SQL database and some web design, back when Guardians Ruins Mystery was a Mystery ( instead of just a game-bug fest, that was finally fixed about 2 patches and 6 months after it was released, just to leave a fairly dull and repetitive mission - that's still borderline impossible without referring to spreadsheets ).

You're not alone with this. It CAN be fun to dig through the numbers, chart the break-evens and find the sweet spots. So, I did my own delta-v and orbit calculations for KSP and had a pile of tables on different parts, tanks and engines, trying to optimize my ship design. For me, this was a part of the game. Sadly, I didn't do this with Elite, mostly because it hides a lot of information from the user (try to compare weapons, and you know what I mean), or there are "balanced" values every new version, making it hard to keep track. Also, there are some really cool tools out there that already do the job (like coriolis.edcd.io and eddb of course). Interesting thing btw are the coriolis.edcd graphs about damage and distance fall-off. Quite surprising some times. There were also threads with people trying to gather comparable and reproducible weapon specs by shooting at each other, measuring shield and hull damage etc.

Huh. Love the title, but since my memory and ability to find what I need online are decent enough, I haven't had a need for any of that stuff. I'm glad it scratches your itch though. :3

sheez some people enjoy stroking their excel cells until they merge into the next row so they have one enormous towering ego fullfilling cell thats as big a whole column.

Here's one for you OP!

+1

I don't relate to the post itself (although a fun read) but your thread title deserves loads of rep.

↑ This.

I don't bother with spreadsheets for the game and the only third party app I use is one of the ship loadout ones. That title though... makes me rethink my meaning in life.
