Just wondering which of the two main game-pads Elite: Dangerous is going to support? GTA IV seemed to support the X-Box type exclusively (unless I did some wrong) and I also noticed in "Dev Diary Video #3 - Player Roles" the X-Box style is being used so is ED going to support one type or both :S

P.S threw a poll in for the sake of it. :)
P.P.S Adding "None" because someone always posts wanting the option even if it off-topic :D
P.P.PS Back too playing Oolite :p

I'd have thought any compatible with a PC would work with the function of the sticks and keys being fully customisable?

A gamepad for a flight game??? yuck yuck yuck NO. Got to be a stick. Got to be a stick preferably a HOTAS and the correct way to use them is stick one side and throttle the other not a central stick.

Each to their own of course :D

Personaly i can't understand why annyone would ever take a gamepad in their hadns.
I can't stand them. But that's me.
One reason i played very vew games on the playstation i bought. And will not buy another konsole. I can't play with gamepads for some reason. i gues not playing with them even furtehrs that ;).

But some games are better played with gamepads. And one thing i hate with windows, is that since they required for there "games for windows" aprovel. My Playstation gamepad doesn't work anymore properly with pc games that support the x-box controller. (batman arkham series for example and what bugged me most mark of the ninja).
Since those games automaticaly assume my controller is an x-box controller.
In windows controller setup all looks ok but in the games all controlls are mixed arround (up is left and so on).
Makes me rage everytime i try a more console leaning game to play with my controller.
And i prever the Dualshok playstation design over the x-box one.
I find the x-box controller to big and clunky. Have problems already with the PS controller to reach everything.

But well i don't like controllers annyway and another reason to stick with my keyboard ^^.

What i want to say with this rant is i hope if Elite supports controller it wount force a x-box crontroller on you.
I will play with a Joystick have a Saiteck cyborg one for flight sims.

being that the OS is by microsoft and the xbox controller is by microsoft...

xbox seems to be the most supported and its a very good controller (D-Pad is a bit ropey but no so many games need it)

Yeah... took me ages to go from keyboard/mouse games for FPS etc, and joystick like CompoPro/Zipstick for other stuff to Joypad.... i can use either now

Ive used control pads on consoles since the days of the master system (unless you include the very early 80s tennis consoles), but for a flight game on a pc...

Not really I'm playing Oolite right now with the PS one, but I'll take your word that the X-box pads are decent :)

i mean generally, even a lot of indie games recognise the Xbox controller straight away (including a representation of the button you press on screen), but not my PS controller i have to configure that manually

i have to admit the PS controllers rock, the DPad is especially good... i have a weird controller addiction...

and i have these..

None for me, keyboard, mouse and HOTAS! I did vote for Playstation type though as I have a PS3.

Brian :)

I remember owning similar joysticks back in the Spectrum 128k & Amiga days and I big massive thing with huge suction cups and made a clicking sound when moving the stick I take it the bottom one is the Snes type? :)

yeah, it feels exactly the same

I finally went through the process of hooking my PS3 controller up to my PC to play Oolite with it the other day. It has ultimately told me that I will need to buy a joystick. I used to have a nice (but old) analogue one. However, I think it got thrown away because the connector type was no longer compatible when I upgraded the PC a few years back.

Will need to do some research! :)

Any recommendations?

I voted for the 360 controller for a few reasons, mainly FD probably have the most experience working with those and they are PC compatible.

I will be testing my during Alpha, but on release I'll be back to keyboard and (hopefully) a nice new HOTAS ;)

Still good to have the option there for people who prefer it.

I like the x52pro, which I chose over the basic model due to some concerns over durability of the basic model. Its lasted a good few years no. Not sure it still gets made but its a lovelly HOTAS setup.

I really cant recommend HOTAS highly enough. Having one hand on the stick and one on the throttle suddenly transforms your flight experience the throttle becomes another axis with which you can fly far more accurately. I find Im constantly using the throttle in a way I never did with a throttle slider on a regular joystick.

The newer joysticks where the stick doesn't move look interesting from a reliability point of view and work in much the same manner as actual fighter controls I believe. I really do recommend using a hotas in the same configuration as in real world cockpits with stick one side and throttle the other, one hand on each rather than trying to hold the stick in the centre with one hand and control the stick with the other and only using the throttle occaisionally. Correctly used you can really dial in your shots like never before...

Xbox controller for me. It's just a shame the D-Pad is so sucky. I'll be looking into getting a decent joystick setup, though, once testing starts.

I would hope, being developed specifically for PC, there will be fully customisable controls, though.

I recently got a 360 controller for my PC (first time I'd used one) and I do prefer it to the PS3 ones.

Alpha/Beta will help me decide if I use that, keyboard/mouse, some combination or if I want to buy a joystick as well!
