Kingdom Come Deliverance

Just started playing this in earnest last night. I've found a few quest bugs in the starter area but other than that very enjoyable. My very first try I thought I would just try some combat so assaulted the first guard I saw. He beat me to a pulp, arrested me and I died in jail. 3 minutes!

It's nice to have a game where your actions have real consequences.

I still think, from having Beta access, that the combat is still a little clunky and clearly aimed at console controllers. This is also illustrated by the flawed lockpicking. You have no control that I have found over how fast you rotate the barrel, coupled with some artificial wiggle and perhaps some mouse acceleraton and you have a mini-game that chews through lockpicks. I'm sure things like this can be ironed out though.

Actually the lock picking is apparently even more difficult if you use a controller. I've levelled up lock picking quite a bit in my game and as it should be....The more you level the easier it gets. The wiggle dies off as you level. It's not a broken mechanic as far as I can see but it doesn't become so easy that it's a meaningless activity either.

Pickpocketing though. That "might" be broken. There's a coloured reticle that changes as you progress but as far as I can tell after much experimenting the detection of your efforts doesn't change with the colour displayed. It's largely random.

Think I found a bug last night where I can't activate sir Robard...or whoever he is (the guy who offers combat training). I've been back to the castle several times...in a previous save he offered combat training...now he doesn't since I can't activate him. Unless I bump into him, he doesn't even register my character is there.

Really hope I don't have to go back a few saves since I've just learned to read

Maybe he's taught you all he can and has no more to say? Try googling him and see what the wiki says

I started another game from scratch so I haven't used his services yet...since I thought I'd start afresh with some knowledge on how the game mechanic works, less blundering about and getting jailed etc...I trained with Serra Robard in the last save, now he just won't activate when standing by the combat arena.

Could well be there's a point or mission I have to reach/fulfil to activate him...I'll persevere and see.

Edit: sussed it and got some sword and defence training from that Captain Gerard chap at Rattay... also found a nice hunter chap in the town who offers bow training [yesnod]

I installed the mod that allows saving when you want and also a mod that gives you visible segments during lockpicking. This has made it so much easier. I've read today that they intend to work on this mechanic.

Early on I found a nice little trainer for lockpicking. Find a room where people are sleeping behind a locked door, unlock it, wait for someone to come out and see what the commotion was, they go back in and lock it again. Rinse and repeat. It's slow going but it works.

I hope they don't dumb it down too much. I think it's finely balanced at the moment I don't approach any lock arrogantly. It's remained tense and engaging.

Agreed. The mod helps but makes it a little too easy if I am honest. That's not to say I've got it right every time as I have still broken the odd pick but having the spokes in place makes it easier to visualise where you should aim for as you rotate. Lowering the mouse sensitivity from normal play also helps.

All I'll say is this. Witcher 3 aside it's the best game I've played in years.

Give it patience though and play the main quest at least until you come proper into the service of Sir Radzig as it will teach you a lot about the combat.

This game is absolutely incredible.

I had high hopes for this since the kicstarter era, but I have to say this, Warhorse Studios (like CD Project RED before them) managed to completely surpass even my best expectations.

Kngdom Come Deliverance is now the proud owner of it's rightful place in my own Masterclass RPG Triunvirate, together with The Witcher 3 and Skyrim (3 games I love for completely different sets of reasons).

I'm thrilled to hear all of these glowing recommendations for the game; the devs took a chance to follow the road less traveled and their efforts are being rewarded by positive buzz and strong sales.

I pre-ordered the game a few months before it released, but haven't had time to do much besides plonk around in the tutorial, and since I see a lot of comparisons to Skyrim and The Witcher 3 being used, one question I have is how "big" is it? I sank about 350 hours in each of those games and was still running into new stories to follow. Does Kingdom Come compare in that sense?

It took me about 40 hours to complete the main quest. If not for the game-breaking bugs I could recommend the game - it’s quite remarkable in many ways. It is nothing like Skyrim, though - very different concept. You play out the pre-ordained story, and leave your mark on it. But in many places you have no input - stuff just happens. Replayability is there, you can do it another way, concentrating on different skills. But it’s just the one story. There are side quests, but not as many as Skyrim.

Once they patch the most serious quest bugs, then it will mostly live up to the promise it has.

Was that 40 hours with most/all side quests and activities, or just blitzing through the main story?
