An open letter poll petition thingy to FD - Free the Cobra Mk 4

Does anyone really care? I certainly don't use my Cobra Mk. IV.

But yeah, Frontier going back on their word and an intentionally promoted selling point for buying Horizons early seems a little more significant than what people want and/or feel entitled to in the game.

Basically, there are more important things to worry about in the game, for the game, as a player of the game... You get the idea.

I would not mind at all seeing the MK4 being made available to everyone. In fact I think it would be better that way. Exclusive cosmetics don't impact gameplay equity, so yes, let FD use that instead. Ships, on the other hand, are definitely a strong inequity factor. And yet it must have been a pain to balance the MK4 so it would be kind of interesting without being interesting.

But I agree it would be bad business for FD to come back on their word and hand it over to everyone, since it was used as a commercial argument. Maybe they could consider the possibility if every MK4 recipient agreed on this? Or at least a vast majority? In any case, I agree: let the MK4 stay for sale in every player shipyards

Since it clearly wasn't a Game Changer and "just exists" - I've never understood why it was exclusive to a point where non-qualifying Players simply could never qualify unless they travel back in time or something.

At least give Players interested in it a chance. Even something as lame as YACG (Yet Another Community Goal) would work.
Otherwise, one could populate and create a new permit System where the Ship is being sold to anyone with no other requirements. I mean... a Permit with an actual benefit? Folks been waiting for that for a long time

Marketing. Not having a chance later was essentially the whole point of the Cobra Mk. IV in the first place. Kind of weird, I know, but there you have it.

Normally I'd agree with you about these sorts of threads, but Agony Aunt is a well-respected member of the community. So here's my oar, and I'll stick it in...

I'm very happy for the Mk4 to be available to all, but I can understand why some folks would get upset. I would have preferred Frontier didn't get into this situation in the first place, but then I don't really like any exclusivity deals.

I don't really care/mind if the Cobra Mk.IV is enabled for purchase by all accounts.

I'm wondering though if Frontier can legally do so - seeing as it was listed as an exclusive to people pre-ordering Horizons. Exclusive being an important word. It's different than using "limited release".

A part of me wonders about the wisdom of making a ship type Exclusive to customers pre-ordering.

Anyway, my guess is that Frontier can't legally unlock the Cobra Mk.IV to everyone, even if they wanted to. However, there is nothing stopping them from releasing a "Cobra Mk.V" which would be almost, but not quite, unlike the Cobra Mk.IV, but maybe has some differences like slightly higher speed or better jump range or somesuch - enough to distinguish it from the Mk.IV

To be honest, the ship isn't worth the effort of a poll. Certainly, FD may consider it's good will more important than the CMkIV. Opening access does no one any favors. I really wouldn't care if it were more available. The thing is a pig. Even if it prospers with Engineering, other ships with the same engineering effort would still be better. Meh.

One person suggested a Viper Mk 5 with the same characteristics as the CM4. But then it wouldn't be an iconic cobra. Another option would be a Cobra Mk5, similar to the Mk4 but with some tweaks. (but not any better - make a trade off somehow).

Rather than another Cobra or Viper Might, I suggest the ZGP Lion

Take the Adder, put the Bridge to top center, like the FDL, then it to about 45 meters and widen the body, with the wings folding like the Adder when the gear is extended

I've also got the Cobra IV and really have no problem with it being available to other players, it makes no sense to deny it from those who could never have got it.

How about a CG that only Cobra IVs can conduct. Tier 1 reward is the release of the CobraIV to everyone. All who take part in the CG get a number of unique paintjobs (and a hula girl bobblehead) depending their contribution, along with a big fat wedge of credits.

As a PS4 commander, I have never had a chance to buy one.

I would even accept if the qualification criteria required something like the RamTah mission if it was needed.

As long as they fix the turret bug. On the Amiga version if you fired from the turret position it would do hull damage to your own ship. I think the DOS version was spared this "feature".

I do not own the Cobra iV and I prefer that Frontier keeps its word about keeping it exclusive. I rather them keep their integrity and learn from their mistakes. My opinion is that it was a bad idea to make the ship an exclusive so I hope they never do that again. There are other carrots they can use to entice people to pay for early access.

I too have access to the 'free' Cobra IV and due to the ship's excellence and adaptability and of course; the constant whining about 'why can't we all have the Cobra IV' threads. I feel that the ship should be accessible to all.

Then when this happens; I will sue F.D. for the price of a fully fitted Cutter.

I think it was a ridiculous decision to lock out the later players...not because these exclusive incentives are unfair, but because Frontier are spineless when it comes to potentially upsetting the ED player-base (demonstrated numerous times); ergo, the Cobra IV was always going to be an uncompetitive, crap ship - which is a travesty given the iconic nature of its predecessor.

I was so looking forward to flying & owning this ship when I pre-ordered - Oooooh imagine? A newer, better cobra? Wow!!! The subsequent anti-climax & straight-up annoyance was almost palpable for me!

Frontier should release it to everyone asap & they could appease the selfish gits players who want them to honour their exclusivity promise by buffing it significantly (at least make it the fastest non-ept ship) to make it a worthy successor to the mk3.
