3.0 offers absolutely no protection against big player ships griefing small player ships

I've nothing against PvP (though its a trifle stale in Elite....Get my G5s with special effects...kaufman retrograde, 4-0-2, snipe with KAM...its hardly a contest of player skill...If I want to dogfight I'll head over to IL2 BOS or DCS thank you very much) BUT why would a player with no cargo, no bounty and no Power affiliation expect to be attacked? There's no IN GAME benefit...so the only reason to do it is whatever's going on in the attackers mind...

Its not about NOT expecting to get attacked...its about not expecting to get attacked for NO REASON...what you're talking about is the wquivilent of shooting down your own Tanker...or being blasted off the runway by someone on your own tea...NOT something I have ever encountered...so maybe my experiences AREN'T Normal...or perjaps you're talking about something like World of Warcraft///which lets be honest is played by "a certain demographic" isn't it?

Absolutely agree with this, Elite is a game in which combat happens, but its not a game in which combat is supposed to happen for no reason....

The lack of reading comprehension in these 15 pages is cringe-worthy, including all the memes about rebuys, station speed, etc. that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the situation.

Last post I'll make in this thread and it can continue for another 100 pages if people want to argue what was already written in the first 2 pages. I'll make the facts crystal clear here:

  • my friend is new to the game, and he doesn't know all the techniques required to avoid a griefer
  • a cobra is still a learning ship
  • this happened at a beacon, not a station. Station speed limits are not relevant
  • he was flying with a rebuy. After he was murdered, he couldn't afford his next rebuy. Memes about "fly before rebuy" are not relevant
  • I was not playing with him at the time, so I couldn't have helped. He related the story to me afterwards

Finally....the point of me making this thread isn't to complain about how the Crime & Punishment system should have prevented him losing his ship.

I'll repeat that. This isn't about C&P preventing ship loss.

I want the C&P system to PUNISH a rammer. Period.

I thought 3.0 would bring improvements to the C&P system, because as someone pointed out, ramming hasn't been addressed up to this point.

But really, it SHOULD be about preventing ship loss. So long as its possible to seriously negatively impact another player's enjoyment of the game, greifers are going to greif. Put in a stiff punishment system for the greifer, and the greifer will find a way to make it apply to the victim instead (example: Suicide ramming)

The fact that newbies have no idea about "Never Fly Without A Rebuy" is a problem. When someone loses their ship can cannot afford a rebuy, odds are good that player isn't coming back.

To be clear, its not a problem that newbies (or anyone else) die to incredibly one sided PVP. The problem is that the game makes everyone's rebuy the same. Regardless if you got overly ambitious and killed by an NPC or if you got mail-slot sniped by a PVPer.

It never happens for no reason. The reason for combat is because one ship has attacked another. That's the only actual reason - everything else is just an excuse. ;)

It's a dangerous galaxy with criminals in it. Criminals often attack law abiding folks for no reason out here in the real world so acting like it's some bizarre incident that someone attacked you in a video game for no reason is a bit silly.

As per the features of 3.0:So what about new players that get griefed by players in big ships? They just get away with it?
Let take a real-life situation and some smuck starts smacking you around. Are you going to stay in that same spot and play dumb while someone hit you? Or are you going to say ouch and try to defend your self or retreat?

My friend just got rammed to death in his Cobra by an Imp Clipper, and now he doesn't even have enough money for his rebuy. So much for "improved" crime and punishment.

What a total loophole.
Oh boo hoo. Was your friend even at the computer when this happened? If someone hitting while you are scanning something. You seen your sheild go down the sounds of the ship coming close. Then take action so you would not be hit.

Hello Commanders!

For the record, ramming is something we're still looking at, along with combat logging. Regardless though, I would offer all Commanders this advice:

* Always try to keep awareness of your sensor dislpay for hollow signatures, which represent other Commanders, and never ignore them.
* Always switch to a flight pattern that allows you to at least see how other Commanders' ships are flying relative to you.
* Immediately check power and power distribution management to ensure your vessel is combat/escape capable when other ships are present.
* Always keep an eye on Comms chatter and info panel messages when other ships are present.
* Treat proximity by any vessel as suspsicious.
* Always have a hyperspace route plotted.

[up] With just a little skill, you will be harder to kill.

Has anyone confirmd that this was actually a player? The player the OP is referencing appears to be fairly new. It's also very rare that there would be a commander waiting at a beacon. To me it just sounds like it was likely an NPC clipper.

We know nothing aside from the basic description given by OP. As of now it's little more than anecdotal evidence.

Do you know that the attacker didn't get a murder bounty and all the associated new C&P stuff? i.e. hot ship, notoriety increase etc.

Right.

Yes it is. Pvp has no content, it will always happen for no reason, and most likely it will happen to mine some salt from threads like these.

He went to a beacon to scan it for a mission, and the clipper was waiting there for players to show up. He kept ramming him out of position so he couldn't scan it, and eventually blew him up.

And seriously...the "git gud" comments are just ridiculous.

"Eventually"? How long did he have to hang around for said death? Usually, if things aren't working out I will leave... So, its not just flying skill ("git gud"), but decision making in general, which comes into question...

But you've been given lots of reasons. You just don't like them. ;) The simplest reason that I attack you is "because I want to". It perfectly justifies my actions in the context of E: D.

Well likewise, the reason I don't play in Open is 1. I can deny you your 'because I want to' and 2. Everything else is available in other modes. See how that works? :D

Your buddy does know you don't HAVE to remain stationary to scan a beacon, right? You can still fly, just keep the nose of your ship pointed in the general direction of the beacon and bingo. Heck you don't even have to be close, you can scan it from the moment you enter the instance.

Now having to do so while under assault of a ramming clipper I've never had to do, but it would be an interesting test of situational awareness.

You sound like a poor big ship pilot. 4-0-2 reverse and shoot is a surefire indicator. Get an FDL and learn to fly it, combat will be a lot more fun.

Rust, DayZ, GTA Online, any number of other open world games. In any of those, you spot another player, and it's time to be wary. Elite is the same, people initiate combat for pure entertainment. But Elite has this population of people usually termed "carebears" who think all combat that isn't a duel isn't ok for some reason.

Combat happens because I am bored and wish to have a fight to entertain myself.
