One of those "The chieftain is awesome" threads

The shape of the canopy is a bit weird to me...

The crossbar separating the front and top panes is too low. The top pane doesn't need to be so huge. I would prefer the front pane taller and top pane smaller so the crossbar is higher up.

Aside from that, really liking the ship as a fighter. I won't be using it as a multi-role but I never intended to anyway.

This being said, I'm very new to the game and I would really like to read more comparisons with the FAS since the spec sheets are so similar.

I kinda like the canopy. Could just be that I’m hopping into this out of a Python and an FDL so pretty much anything with an actual view is nice :p

I think the one thing I would change is the engine sound. The boost sounds like tearing paper and some chalk board noise. Oof. Give it something more aggressive, like the viper engines. That thing sounds beast!

I've been using mine pretty much all the time since 3.0 dropped. Fully G5 Engineered and faster than hell!

A lot of fun for running planetary scan missions with an SRV. So much easier to land it now that they fixed the landing bug that was in the Betas. Been getting some practice using its unique drift behavior by doing stop/boost FA Off turns just above a planet's surface at about 300-400m. You can really see how the drift behaves this way.

I wish the ship was a little less responsive when not moving fast though. I am finding its twitchy nature a difficult platform for fixed weapons like my Advanced Plasmas. Finally put two C3 Beams on instead with turreted MCs and find it much more fun in combat.

The ship could have used one more class 3 slot in my opinion. I would have liked to have both some Collector and Repair Limpets on board.

On the "awesome" side, the cargo scoop is superbly located! ;) Right under the nose. Now THAT beats the Python hands down! It's my new rare art / black box collector.

just tried the Chief for a few runs in a RES... my 2 cents: don't... just don't... especially if you already have a fully engineered Vulture. The chieftain looks nice but it's definitely not a pure fighter craft xD

maybe for fun I will engineer it to the max to see what it can become, but for now my verdict is: not a good fighter

My advice to those getting into the Chieftain but not really sure what it’s good for: try a loadout based around 3 class 1 railguns. That’s what those small hardpoints were designed for in my opinion.

And if you are not very good with those, the Chieftain is a perfect ship to start learning.

I'm very keen on the Chieftain.. I just... can't figure out what to DO with it.

It's fun to fly - extremely maneuverable.
It doesn't have a great jump range, but it isn't terrible either.
The hardpoint placement and convergence is good.
The view is nice.
But... there just seems to be a lack of anything that makes me go: "You know what ship would be perfect for this? The Chieftain!"

I know what it needs that would make it exceptional, and it's actually something very simple:

One more Not-Locked Class 2 Internal Slot.

Yep, just a mere class 2 slot would make this a remarkable ship. Right now, it's barely markable, let alone remarkable.

I get it, it was built to be a combat ship - hence all the Class 4 (3) Military Slots. But it still manages to come up a bit lacking.

I agree with one more class 2 or hell even a class 1. I wanna use it for planetary exploration.

I have an Asp Explorer for that + 1 small railgun. Lots of fun to annoy the hades out of things with.

you're welcome.

It would be a shame if the Chieftan made the FAS obsolete though. But both ships seem quite similar with the Chieftan offering a bit more in attack and defense.

And agility, and hardpoints

I was there yesterday, they have bulkheads too.

So I've been flying it for a bit and have just one issue that i think needs to be addressed.

The ship is a combat specific ship.

It either needs better shields or a stronger canopy as once those shields are down that canopy will smash if a fly hits it

Fit 2 MRPs matey. 1 size 4 and 1 size 2. The size 4 is your main damage absorber, the size 2 is there to bump up the resistance to damage of the canopy and hardpoints.

As a hybrid, mine has 360mj of G5 thermal resist biweave shielding (one G5 HD booster), 2 MRPs as stated above, all the rest HRPs, it is quite OP. The shield recharges in 38 seconds from dead (from the moment it goes down, not the moment it starts recharging), so I just chaff like crazy when the shield is down. Definitely the best medium ship in the game now for multiple contact engagements, without any buffs at all. In fact, I think it needs a nerf, it has made my beloved FAS obsolete overnight for PvE.

I only have a handful of hours in mine but I haven't lost my canopy yet. But then this ship seems to be able to stay out the line of fire better than my FAS. My FAS I would have to bring home once I started getting a bit beaten up. The Chieftain has run out of ammo before this has happened.

I'm actually really loving this ship. I haven't been evilly cackling while welded to the six of some hapless NPC since I first flew my Vulture.
