Finished with mining

Well that was fun. 7 hours of mining to finish the 500t for Selene (had 200t to finish off). Then another 2 hours and 140 protector limpets to find the 10t of Painite.
Never, ever going to mine again.
Hint for anyone still needing to unlock that particular engineer.....only mine Pristine Metallic Rings. At least you'll have a chance of getting the Painite while getting the 500t.

It's not for everyone. If you're a combat focused pilot, mining will seem like the most mind-numbing drudgery imaginable. OTOH, if you're combat-averse or just looking for something low-key (both of which I can be fairly accused of), mining may just fit the bill. Different strokes for different folks, right?

Good on you for getting through it!

I have a strange relationship with mining.
I'll do it to get something specific for an unlock or a CG and rather enjoy it (in a wierd kind of relaxing way) but the momment I have what I need I stop and never concider doing it again until I have to.

I read somewhere that mining was going to get a good pass through for the Q4 content (alongside exploration).

I dislike the system of limpet collection that FD has made here. It's just silly. I'd have much preferred that they made system where limpets were precious pieces of equipment that you bought for a lot of money and looked after them. They don't just disappear after a while or after one run when (inexplicably!) you want to pick up one item.

Anyways it's the faff with limpet controllers and limpets that puts me off mining. I doubt this will change with the Q4 content but maybe other things will improve.

Limpets are just a tool. They're like dish soap - I never cry over using dish soap to get the dishes washed. And when I run out, I go buy more.

Expendable limpets provide a limiting factor to gameplay. For instance, as a scavenging, dirty pirate I have to find places to dock so that I can replenish my supply of tools.

I've written too much today, and am not getting my point across well. I'll shut up now.

Pretty much the same for me once I got into Selene's Jeans

Wondering now though if it may be a good way to collect mats now that we can ignore selectively???

It's a great way to collect mats. Especially RES mining.

Reportedly, lead and boron can only be gotten from mining, not from planets. Well, and gotten from the material traders, of course.

Was mining the other day for the first time in ages. Got over 20t of painite plus a load of plat etc. Took about an hour. I was being very picky though.

Another excellent way to collect mats and make pretty good cash is just to be a salvage bum. While pirating, I fly around Anarchy space just looking for Degraded USS. The contents range anywhere from trash mats to really valuable salvage (salvage value got a big buff with 3.0). Last night while hunting the CG, I turned in 300k worth of escape pods alone, from two USS!

Go to occupied Anarchy systems and you can run across downed T-9s with Painite, AI Relics, and earlier today I dropped in on a Distress call and stole a large data cache from the guy instead of helping hi out. All the while, I'm just hoovering up any mats I see.

Never thought I'd have so much fun just tooling around, doing nothing in particular.

That's why I encourage folks to try RES mining. In Bhotho at the High RES yesterday my first rock yielded 8T of both Gold and Painite. Just make sure you have a ship that can soak up some damage.

Alternatively, Low/Medium RES have weaker pirates.

The dish soap analogy was pretty good!

Thanks! Mining currently is limited by availability of limpets. With a finite amount of collectors and proepectors, you have to weigh what rocks are worth stopping for, and what cargo is worth keeping.

If limpets weren't limited in that regard, you could just cruise around indefinitely until you had a hold full of painite.

I like the way they work.

Good news, indeed. Maybe ED is finally becoming what it is supposed to be. (Fingers Crossed)

I must admit that I am really enjoying SRV mat collecting a lot more now that I have the cargo space to just grab everything in sight until the bin is full.

I'm still 12KLY's out slowly working my way back from an exploration jaunt. I figured it was a good use of time to refill planet-side mats while FD worked out the 3.0 bugs for a week or two.

So far this is looking like a really nice upgrade. I know the C&P thing probably needs a few tweaks, but I tend to focus on the improvements as they tend to stick over time while the buggy stuff gets fixed.

Seems like a big improvement so far.

Bormellite is not uncommon as a mission reward. You could potentially breeze through Bill Turner by running missions to gain the Ailoth permit that give Bromellite as a reward and by the time you get the permit have plenty enough for Bill. Just sayin'.

The new ignore filters are a godsend for ice mining, diamond hunting in particular. You just ignore everything but diamonds, then you can tap ice blocks with your lasers and only send out a prospector when you find diamond. Even better with Mining Lances and a fast/agile ship. Set up a Dolphin just for that. Hell, you might even be able to set up a Chieftain as a good diamond hunter.

Noticed I was getting a lot of bromellite during those station rescues. Same goes for modular terminals. Might be worth bringing a big cargo rack next station attack.

Now that my engineer unlocks are done I might try mining again. Might be a little better when I don't have a specific material to look for. It was torture the first time around. Sold everything as soon as I dropped off that last bromellite
