Finished with mining

I found an undiscovered system about 1K ly out with pristine metallic rings. When I finally decide to do that particular grind, that's where I'll be going

And I'm sure pirates will still show up 2 nanoseconds after I arrive ;)

The new ignore filters are a godsend for ice mining, diamond hunting in particular. You just ignore everything but diamonds, then you can tap ice blocks with your lasers and only send out a prospector when you find diamond. Even better with Mining Lances and a fast/agile ship. Set up a Dolphin just for that. Hell, you might even be able to set up a Chieftain as a good diamond hunter.

Interesting. Thanks for the tip!

Bormellite is not uncommon as a mission reward. You could potentially breeze through Bill Turner by running missions to gain the Ailoth permit that give Bromellite as a reward and by the time you get the permit have plenty enough for Bill. Just sayin'.

Phew. The thought of more ice mining gave me shivers (pun intended, even if not very good).

I honestly find mining fun. Looking forward to the improvements later this year.

Very interesting idea! I'm going to have to try this out, it might actually finally fix ice mining!!!

500 tons is too high- 7 hours to get access? Multiplying that by the number...

Well that was fun. 7 hours of mining to finish the 500t for Selene (had 200t to finish off). Then another 2 hours and 140 protector limpets to find the 10t of Painite.
Never, ever going to mine again.
Hint for anyone still needing to unlock that particular engineer.....only mine Pristine Metallic Rings. At least you'll have a chance of getting the Painite while getting the 500t.

Working as intended.

I bagged a ton of panite the first time I went out in a decent sized properly equipped mining ship, it took a while but i was chuffed being able to get so many credits for it. Until a couple of days later I got the engineer mission and had to go and do it all again...

If you only got 500 tons in 7 hours, you must be doing something very wrong.

I must admit I haven't done much mining at all in this version of the game.
Think i tried it once in FE2, for all of 5 mins... not my cuppa either. Never tried it in ED, doubt i ever will.

It didn't seem so bad in Beeb Elite iirc, tho again i never spent any time at it. Only exception was rock hermits - occasionally on approach to a planet you'd encounter a larger asteroid, that was actually inhabited - if you shot at it the hapless miner would launch out in a small fighter (Kraits, Mambas and Sidewinders IIRC) to defend their claim. But if you took them out and continued blasting their rock-hovel, it would shatter, and and you could collect some of the fragments to sell as minerals. If the hermit had an escape capsule then you also had the chance to bag yourself a slave. So, not so much 'mining' as cold-blooded piracy and murder, really. In those circumstances tho, you were sucked in by the pace of the game, there was little let up in the action and you could be fighting off a whole pirate clan seconds later (or often, at the same time as the rock hermit). Halcyon days..

Planted a few MB4's in the FE2 endgame when you're made, and out drifting the fringes in a Puma clipper or whatever. Just for something new to try. Come back months later and see what pittance they've collected, not that you needed the cash at that stage..

Best thing about the whole mining gig IMHO was the small, cheap, once-shot-kill laser for those lean builds or when you needed to max fuel or cabins etc..

Having said all that, i can imagine that shooting rocks with a laser and hoovering up the shrapnel is probably edge-of-seat stuff by ED's standards. Presumably the fragments all come with the obligatory "flight-assist" to prevent them outrunning your ship's speed limit (because how lame would that be, trying to chase a lump of rock that's moving at 150 m/s when your 'top speed' is 140 m/s?).. But i guess it's something else to do, in the absence of being allowed to accelerate or thus do anything at all exciting or fun in your own so-called 'spaceship'..

As Mr. Lizard says, the ignore function has improved mining a great deal.

I hit up every Threat 0 signal source, scan wakes, and scan everything, so that part is not quite as demanding. But, mining is a must.

Some Space Loach must have been trapped in a coal mine. During the 1800's. :(

Cant stand mining

Not sure why they feel the need to force it on us

Mining isn't forced, it's your choice. If you want things that require mining again it's your choice. Otherwise the same argument could be applied to combat, to well any aspect of the game. We choose to do things or we choose not to. No one is being forced to do anything. It's a absurd way of thinking.

That's why I encourage folks to try RES mining. In Bhotho at the High RES yesterday my first rock yielded 8T of both Gold and Painite. Just make sure you have a ship that can soak up some damage.

Alternatively, Low/Medium RES have weaker pirates.

Definitely. While non RES mining has it's place for ships with no shields RES mining is a shed load quicker. It should go without saying that the quality of the ring is important too.

Haha, I feel the same way about combat. I've been playing since Alpha (early 2014) and in the 3120 hours I've played, I've done combat for like 20 at most as I found it mind-numbingly boring and simply not fun.

Mining on the other hand, I've probably mined for close to 1,500-1,800 hours as I find that fun and very relaxing.

I still need the Alioth permit. :(

You can easily get Bromelite as mission rewards now.

I was intending to mine mine while doing the Alioth Independent thing but then noticed that the new mission reward feature offers a lot of Bromelite, got over the 50 needed completing just three haulage misson's.

Apparently according to another thread the price of various mined commodities have had a buff, so I may revisit mining (one day).

I did my unlocking in a T6 at Colonia. I only mined pristine sources. It was kind of awesome. Hoping to do it again in the future!
Perhaps I should park a mining Cutter there.

i like mining but i am looking forward to Q4 which has updates to it.

there is a lot that could be done even in the current mechanics...... i would love if we could set our hoppers on what to collect and what to reject then allow our co-pilot to do the nuts and bolts, then allow us to prospect the roids in an SLF (tagging roids which then the drone fires from mothership) and also allowing us to defend our ship from pirates in the SLF......

mining could still be done as it is now if we wanted, but equally we could do the ship protection if we choose too.
