ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Further to this, for those who care ;) :

The camera driver requires SSE4.1+ instruction set support. So any older CPUs that do not support this (e.g my laptop A8 - SSE 4.a) will be unable to get the camera going properly.

Unknown if Oculus will (or can) fix this, and if not, it also will eventually limit the minimum specs on E: D with OR.

Should be easy enough to fix by emulating the SSE4.1 instructions. Obviously that isn't going to be quite as fast as doing it in hardware but considering its only working on the positional tracking it won't be much of a problem.

You can use the Intel SDE tool to run the Oculus positional tracking service in SSE4.1 emulation mode so it works on none SSE4.1 CPU's with the majority of demos now. Unfortunately because ED doesn't currently use the Oculus service but instead uses its own internal driver its impossible to use a external tool like SDE to emulate the instructions for it. Unless Fonrtier could maybe point us to the service that runs ED's positional tracking, then we could set it to run using the Intel SDE and everyone could have full tracking now.

NOTE: Didn't read this whole thread so if this has already been mentioned ignore me.

1. Download the runtime and (optional) SDK
2. Set up the Rift by following the instructions ...
http://static.oculusvr.com/sdk-downl...ion_Manual.pdf
3. Make sure you update the firmware.
4. Test using the small room demo and / or oculus world using direct mode.
5. If they work, calibrate your IPD and tracking zone using the config app and small room. I find putting the camera on the back wall and moving the desk forward allows for more wiggle room.
6. If everything is cool, switch to extended mode inside the config app. For the moment keep the monitor set to primary.
7. Not sure about AMD, but for NVIDIA cards you will need to change the orientation of the screen, so that it appears the correct way round. This can be done in the NVIDIA control panel. Whilst you are in there, create a 3d settings profile for ED and set antialiasing and triple buffering to on. if you get stuttering, try disabling the triple buffering
8. Lastly in the NVIDIA control panel, set the Rift refresh rate to 75 hz.
9. Ok now open up the oculus config file again and hit Ctrl , Alt and Del. in task manager, close wscrip.exe and ovservice.exe in processes.
10. If its NOT Elite Dangerous you are wanting to play at this point, you will need to set the rift now as the primary monitor. If its Elite Dangerous you want, just open the game.
11. In options / graphics make sure the refresh rate is set to 75 hz and v sync is on. Switch to oculus mode and set display to secondary monitor.
12. Once in game, lean back in your chair and hit F12 to reset the rift and avoid clipping. If you are still not happy, move your desk away from the wall and reset again. (Assuming you have the camera mounted in the wall behind the desk.)
*If you are getting a message saying oculus service not available, go to your oculus folder and open the inside the services folderovrservice_x86 or x64. Then open the config.exe inside the tools folder.
* it's also worth mentioning that its worth spending some time setting up your IPD and playing with the lens distance (via the screws on the sides of the rift)... Especially if things seems overly blurry.
* if still no joy, try disabling / unplugging peripherals, particularly logitech devices and drivers.
* if things are stuttering this is possibly a vsync issue and you should check that you have forced it through in NVIDEA for Elite. Make a profile and switch vsync, AA and triple buffering to on. Note* if juddering occurs try switching off the triple buffering as your first trouble shooter Also make sure your rift is set to 75 hz in the NVIDIA panel in screen res section. Lastly set the colour scheme to windows basic. This disables Aero, which for some reason can play havoc with the rift monitor.
* also try switching input to PC from HDMI to DVI or VICE VERSA... No idea why this makes a difference but it has for me twice now!
* if it STILL doesn't work go back and try again, chances are you missed something or did them out of order.
* update the firmware a few times just to rule it out ... Again this one worked for me
* setting colour scheme to window basic (from aero) also has been reported to make a difference.
* some people with windows 8.1 x64 are still having no luck! One guy installed win 7 and it worked fine. Another back dated to previous win 8 version and it also worked.
* those with the no camera working found switching between USB 3.0 and 2.0 brought it to life, whilst another found that the powered USB hub worked.

I tired the above over and over again and could not get it to work.

Then i made this change to my setup and it now works perfectly along with many other games such as Quake II and Warthunder;

I used the DVI converter block that comes with Oculus to connect to my 3D TV HDMI, then i ran the oculus directly into the video cards HDMI slot.

Followed the instructions as above and remember to kill those two processes for head tracking to work. Some game will require those process active to run, elite does not. Also remember to select secondary display in elite menus.

Massive thunbs up to frontier team for making DK2 comparability so fast! However for me even the DK2 resolution is still far too low for serious gaming. I heard the Samsung note 4 will be released soon.... it uses the exact same size panel as the oculus... (DK2 uses Samsung note 3 screen). So i wonder if we will be able to simply connect that into our DK2 for an instant 50% res boost? That would help a lot. Maybe the screen door will be reduced even further?

The Galaxy Map is useable in DK2

The only thing that stops me playing with it on is the Galaxy Map. Have you found a solution to navigate easily?

You definitely can use the galaxy map with the DK2. After playing around with different control arrangements and getting some practice, I'm using it a lot, and it is a lot more simple than you think. You need to understand the map concept before talking about controls, so apologies if this is teaching the sucking of eggs.

Basic Map Navigation
The main thing, even though you have lots of freedom, is that there is a horizontal plane, and every star has a vertical tail up/down to that plane with an orange dot shown on the plane. On the plane there is blue circle with 4 arrows, and to select a star you just need to move the circle over the orange dot.

You can move the blue circle on the horizontal plane, and you can move the horizontal plane up and down, which gives you 3 dimensions of movement to select starts.

The other important thing is the angle you are looking at, becuase you often can't easily see the blue circle or the stars you want clearly, so you can also rotate the view, but the blue circle will always be in the centre. The first thing I always do is to tilt the camera so I am longing slightly downwards, and the blue circle is much more obvious.

TL;DR: Three axes for movement; three axes for the view; the blue selection circle stays in the centre; move it over the orange dot to select the star.

Controls
You could use a 360 controller to do this exactly, but I use a HOTAS + mouse setup that is broadly similar (swapping between mouse and joystick). I have movement of the blue circle mapped to the joystick and the view direction mapped to the mouse, so the joystick is used to select stars and the mouse for the view. To get all 6 degrees of freedom mapped I use the throttle as well, which is also handy for zooming.

For the navigation panel, the mouse doesn't work so I just use the standard UI controls on my joystick POV hat that I use elsewhere in the game. It's not quick, but it works. And you can read the text, you just have to lean towards it.

If I had 2 POV hats rather than one, I would use one of the hats instead of the mouse, which would simplify it even more, but this setup works for me.

This took a lot of trial and error with the mappings of my HOTAS-X in the controls panel; I suggest that for most people, just choosing different axes and seeing what happens is the best way to start. And remember that your main UI controls work in the map, but most other controls can be allocated to map functions without affecting their normal use.

TL;DR: Map each of the axes to an axis on your controller; use the normal UI controls on the navigation panel.

Hope this helps :)

This also looks like a NEAT solution :)

I agree - I find trying to play without it very difficult. The only thing that stops me playing with it on is the Galaxy Map. Have you found a solution to navigate easily?

Not sure where you are but the UK's current warm weather is making it hard. Try and keep the room cool or buy a little desk fan.

Yep, in the UK and have a fan blowing air into the room. The next step will be bringing the air con unit upstairs.

The Galaxy map is virtually unusable for me with the Oculus on. I end up looking at it through my OBS preview window instead. I end up squinting too much if I use the Oculus. I'll probably go with a Voice Attack solution similar to the one suggested above. I already use Voice Attack for most other things, it just didn't seem to make sense for the Galaxy map until now.

I've played for a few nights with the Hauler.

Just updated and bought the Lakon 6 ....and good god it blew my mind!!
The giant full surround glass cockpit looked amazing.
It is just stunning!

I notice the judder is not present, even at high detail settings, when I launch the game after a fresh reboot and not running any other programs. Just reboot->kill oculus service->launch. I can't explain it but it seems to work every time for me.

GTX 680, i7-3770k. v-sync forced off in nvidia control panel.

Whoo, out for delivery. Should be arriving by he end of the day!:D

Thanks for updating the colour. I was being superstitious and was going to wait until it was actually here! ;)

Edit: Also didn't see any indication that Splendour's had shipped?

Is anyone else having issues with the positional tracking in this game? Its like the pos tracking is switching off and on rapidly. It doesn't happen in the desk demo.

Jittery headtracking

Morning all,

Got my hands on ED the other day, and bar from spending the first day figuring out how to fly, I had a go with my DK2 last night.

After finally getting it showing up correctly, the only issue I have is the headtracking is jittery, and seems like there is some kind of motion blur meaning I have to keep perfectly still to be able to read text.

Is this normal or is something wrong?
I've followed the tips posted on here and reddit, using the Oculus service manager, and Nvidia control panel.

Any pointers?

I have not played since the last update - desperately trying to minimise use - however it has been flawless for me.

are you sure your camera is positioned correctly. I have found some software seems more fussy on the camera positioning than others.

Does it seem 'jittery' for you too? (and also very blurry when moving?)

Just posted about this but hasn't been approved yet,

If aero is disabled and you are using dX 9 or 10 (not 11) ... If you've tried switching to dVi ... then its most likely your GPU
Switch all settings to low and then wait for a fix I'm afraid...

Yeah, disabled Aero through the Oculus Service Manager,
Good point, not sure which dx im using,
And its running through the DVI converter,

An no problem, its fairly usable just a bit of a pain! Thanks for the tips!
