Sea Of Thieves

whilst initially the post was in the wrong section........ I would say you were wrong on 2 accounts
1) Dangerous Discussion IS a forum for xbox users........ (admittedly it is meant to be elite ;) )
2) Sea of Thieves is a play anywhere title, so xbox AND PC.

And yet the thread was moved to general gaming.

Yarrrr!!

Open world piratey action with pc/Xbox cross play and opportunities to just mess about with yer mates, looks like a barrel of laughs to me :D

The sceptic in me is a little dubious about the long term appeal, I mean, short of picking up a quest, returning the discovered booty and then picking up another quest, there doesn't seem to be any kind of progression. Kind of reminds me of astroneer in that regard.. I'll probably pick it up on release just so I can have an excuse to talk like a pirate!

It looks cool. Reminds me of Monkey Island. Need to see all the content of the full game that's not in the beta.

It's early access for some, of course, but probably too early for me.

I was watching Mack play this the other day and it seemed you bought a map, identified the island, found a treasure chest or two on the map and duge them up, carried them back to your ship, sailed back to where you bought the map and sold the chest....then bought another map.

The sailing looks great though, the sea is really well done, combat looks like fun and co-operation between a small crew must be quite satisfying, feeling like Guns of Icarus. I would imagine single player quite boring at the moment though.

This is exactly what it is currently - it's fun, and sailing is entertaining solo - it also has, without doubt, the best water rendering I've seen in 30+ years of gaming. It's truly beautiful. The game however is just 'ok', but I suspect will shine with a group of half-pished friends. Having none (who game), this isn't something I'll get to experience :)

You can sail on your own, but you're not playing solo; learned that the hard way.

The downside of such play is that you can be at the mercy of fate....have the wrong crew members offline for some reason, and your game experience suffers. There's a reason MMOs tend to move away from large groups and are trying to introduce a more flexible approach.

I personally prefer multiplayer that is optional....not the main focus of the game. Sea of Thieves looks interesting, but the multiplayer multicrew approach doesn't really appeal to me and has turned what would otherwise be a certain purchase into a "maybe".,

Having said that, it is great to see Rare doing something other than Kinetc game again, and it would be nice to see some of the old franchises make a come back. Perfect Dark for example, or Jet Force Gemini or even Conker. Maybe even a new Sabreman game - maybe they could even release Mire Mare ;)

But yeah - to me, multiplayer games bring as many problems with them as they do potential and for all that players like multiplayer, I think the recent failures of certain MP only games demonstrate the folly (my opinion) of such an approach. A strong single player campaign frees a game from the necessity of embracing and creating a strong multiplayer community, and address the flaws of multiplayer systems just as a strong multiplayer game leverages that community to enhance the overall gaming experience.

Whether I buy Sea of Thieves or not depends on how good the single player element is. As for whether any of its systems can be translated to ED....in principle, sure. In practise, there's a lot more to gaming systems and what works in one game does not necessarily translate well to another. I'd have preferred a different iteration of multicrew in ED myself - my concept was to provide each ship with new multicrew modules that could be attached to specific hardpoints, with each module tailored to a specific task and requiring a dedicated crew member to operate, ensuring that gameplay could be tailored around the various needs, with new module specific gameplay and ensure that such gameplay ADDED to a ships capabilities rather than replaced it - but we got what we got.

Whether any of the ideas or concepts are worthwhile adapting to ED is something that can only really be determined in play after seeing how those systems work in a live environment.

ED could use concepts from Sea of Thieves:

For people who can't imagine what first person EVA gameplay could add to Elite Dangerous: check Sea of Thieves.

Sea of Thieves is essentially an open world, fantasy, pirate game. It has an emphasis on multiple crew members collaborating with different roles.

So there's many interesting and cool things to do on foot, rather than being the ship. Similar concepts should be used for ED.

^^^ This.

My schedule to play games is so erratic, and frequently rather short, that its hard to play any game that requires you to team up with others. Either I end up in a pick-up-group which is rarely a fun experience (especially if you find yourself in a fight with an organized group), lose half my play session trying to meet up with my group, or I have to quit half way through, leaving others in the lurch.

The days where I could reliably be available to game for half the night after work are long behind me, and probably won't appear again until after I'm semi- or fully-retired.

I was a fan of the original Pirates! (on the C64) and I love the 2004 remake, but unless the game has a strong single-player campaign, the forced multi-crew is going to be a no-sell for me.

Absolutely agree with this point. My own gaming situation said more eloquently than I ever could.

If you have friends that are buying it and easily make a crew in the evening to play them Yes! Yes! Yes!

If you have no friends that are buying it. Or just no friends in general then I'd say don't bother.

Finding a crew was a pain in the .....hmmmm when beta was on.

Bought it yesterday . Played solo fa a couple of hours .... gorgeous graphics ...intuitive UI and all that. Learnt how ta sail a square rigged Sloop ( called her 'The Bloody Chihuahua' in my mind, no option that I could see to name ship ingame ) very satisfying I must say, wind physics seem to be very simplified for playability but probably very much needed.

My mate jumped in the game, quickly created a character..... met him in the starter tavern ...we drank grog , we danced the Hornpipe ( I think ) he vomitted over me so I tried to duel with him with my Cutlass ( seemed like there is some sorta 'No Friendly Fire Allowed' at work ) mind you I was slightly the worse fa wear aswell ....

.... we went on to have a mini adventurous voyage, all in all good times were had and funny memories were made, more than I've mentioned in this post.

ps, did u all know that it is cross play so PC gamers and console players are all in the same world/server crewing the ships together ? ( if only Elite were so )

Started playing it yesterday. Initially fun, but boy is it shallow! Just 3 types of generic fetch quests, with rewards being cosmetic-only.

The PvP aspect is fun, but again is so limited that I can't see it lasting.

Is it still difficult to get connected to the game servers? I've watched several videos that explain they are artificially limiting access to the servers so as not to overload them, in effect shutting out new players.
