Modes Play in open is not what some would have you believe!

Guilt trip? Is this a forum for the game or for emotionally unstable weirdos with a messed up sense of perspective? Seriously.. Is there something wrong with you? <SNIP>

You just proved my point in spades. Thank you!

Nearly every single word in the above sentence is an insult. The last one directed specifically at me.

Why would I want to spend a second in a game mode that contained someone like you in it?

I mean seriously! Get a clue!

The title of this thread is "Don't Be Afraid to Play Open" Where I come from, that is called a Guilt Trip. At the very least it is a transparent line of passive aggressive bull crap!

Like I said... You A-clowns are your own worst enemies.

I'm out.

How about everyone just play whatever mode is good for them?

I play SOLO in VR due to limited keyboard access for comms or if I’m focused on a task and don’t want to be disturbed.

I play PG in one of several groups depending on if I want to do something like exploring a Guardian puzzle with like minded players who value the same things in game that I do.

I play OPEN when I want to meet new people and be generally social and see what’s happening in hot spots and don’t mind being sidetracked or waylaid. I also like to join random crews if there are any.

I play ARENA when I want to have some quick combat in great environments that is more exciting to me than ships circling each other in space. (and when I can get a match)
I largely forgot your entire post after reading that last statement... you get matches??!?? I've managed 2 sessions in the last 5 months on xbox, barely 10 mins total. Sad panda.

So, I have not been on the forum in a few days. I log in today and right at the top is a week old thread "Open play trolls"! One person complaining they got attacked and 65 pages pf people debating this.
You think we stayed on topic? :)

I randomly scanned the posts and it is the same things over and over.
There was talks of Kb/M, Zarek turned up, there was banter. Don't besmirch this good thread dear Sir.

So I thought I shared my POSITIVE experience in open.

I was flying around Wyrd this week. Running missions and gathering Mats for some Dweller upgrades. Flying to all the close by systems running my missions. One night I encountered at least 15 other Commanders. I was not attacked once! I exchanged greetings with a few of them and we all went about our business. Ships from Cobras to Chieftains to Anacondas! Ranks of all kinds!

As the title says, don't be afraid to play in open. It is not the gank fest some on these forums would have you believe just so they can get their agenda implemented.

If you get attacked, now you know there is a jerk in that system, go somewhere else. If you need to do something in that system then yes, switch to solo or PG (i.e. A CG). Understand that yes, there are some dangerous places in this game and there are some jerks just like any other game. Understand where they might gather. i.e. Community Goals, birth systems, Engineers (though I have only been attacked once at an engineer. I won and we had a nice chat afterwords).

Now that we have more chances to play together (wing missions, etc.), Open gives you the chance to meet other players and interact, make friends. Hiding in Solo/PG defeats the whole purpose of a multi-player game.

I just thought I would share something positive regarding playing in Open.

DISCLAIMER: I am neither a greifer/ganker nor a PVPer. Though I would not run from a PVP encounter I thought was evenly matched.
Glad you were having fun :)

Thing is, it's often not fear, but the complete lack of desire to meet irritants that make people not log into Open. Fear would be fun, irritation isn't.

edit: there you are thread! Sneaking off like that!

Found someone summarizing the thread for you.
Open is full of psychos, Solo is full of carebears, 90sKid has a personal vendetta against some cat in England, and we're posting Bartle Gamer Psychology Test results.
Tests results! Followed up by goat memes. This thread has got everything!

There are a couple of reasons why I no longer venture into Open:

(1) The implied threat, often quoted by the more vocal PvP/Open supporters: If you play in Open you automatically consent to PvP. Umm no I didn't, just because Player A feels that way it doesn't mean I have to see it that way. And if you are interdicted, and manage to evade by waking out, your now apparently stand a chance to be put on a KoS list for not doing the 'correct' thing and dying. I will not be player content for some 12 yo (age is the mentality, not the actual).

(2) This one was a little more cerebral I guess. A while ago I was reading a thread in the PvP sub-forum where a Commander in a T7 complained that he was killed by a wing of large ships (Cutters from memory). And the responses from some of the PvP were rather strange. Their main thrust was it was the Trader's fault for flying a T7, and if he wanted to continue to play in open he either had to sell the T7 and buy a 'real' combat ship or get rid of all those silly cargo racks and module tank his trader. When the Commander very politely replied asking how he was suppose to trade if he wasn't carrying cargo the was laughed at and naturally told to 'Git Gud'. The whole conversation annoyed me, here were a bunch of supposedly mature, experienced players telling someone that if you want to play in Open, especially around the Bubble, forego any thought of doing anything except combat or at least build your fleet for combat. So much for everyone being able to play the game their way.

Look I have nothing against Open, just some of the people that inhabit it. If I could be in Open and know that whilst I have a chance of conflict with a Commander I also have a chance of avoiding it, I would. But it seems this small minority of Open Players think it is a free for all and anyone who doesn't abide by their rules suffers. Just remember that a growing number of PvP'ers consider even a low wake out of a conflict akin to combat logging now, that really shows their lack of maturity in my opinion.

True story but I started playing this game in open...then spent two years alone cos I cant be bothered listening to it...fear had absolutely nothing to do with it, ye shouldnt flatter yerself by entertaining such incorrect beliefs.

Nowadays, Im back in open because I always said if frontier at least made an attempt at sorting out the crime and punishment issue, then that token effort alone would be enough to convince me they were serious about making that aspect of criminal gameplay more relevant. Call it a promise I made to meself and leave it at that...enough salt without needlessly creating more.

In saying that, Im also no noob anymore so my experience in open is vastly different to what it was back when I were a nipper. As regards the fear...perhaps ye have more to fear from others who decide they can be bothered after years of self imposed exile...who knows what the future has in store...what scores are to be one day settled ;)

Greetings,

Open play has it's pros and cons. Some systems welcome Open play while other popular systems especially Engineers have players waiting to kill you. That is their style of play and is part of the game. While the OP had a positive experience many others did not do so well. My suggestion is to learn the game in PvE and take some ships into PvP that you can afford to lose having the rebuy to learn how to survive. It starts with a Sidewinder and as a player moves up in ships and armament play with PvP with each to see what one needs to improve on next ship. Note that PvP requires serious Engineering as well as combat skills. It was designed that way for balance so players not into PvP combat can do well with NPC enemies. Still one will never be as good as the radical PvP players. I play in Open a lot since 2014 but it comes with experience knowing where to go, knowing what to expect and bringing the proper well equipped ship. It can be positive but also very negative. You decide.

Regards

I must agree ive come across some world class A holes in open. Literally world class. The stories i could tell.

But ive also made some great friends that i wing with now and then. Sometimes if im having trouble with a group of undesirables i call on them..like that scene in Anchor Man. We then go get the buggers and its very...VERY satisfying. But most of the time we just wing up and chill out in a res site and chat and be social.

I guess what im saying is that for every A hole there is a nice commander..and the thought of never meeting these cool people simply because i dont want to suffer the other A holes seems like .. a mistake.

TLDR: I get it. Play solo if thats what you want. But im sad ill never get to fly with you

I'm glad you had a pleasant experience. My experience in Open is also almost always pleasant.

Why do people who love open use terms like, "afraid" or "hide" when talking about those who play in other modes. When you use words like that all you are doing is trolling.

You want to play in Open fine have fun, please quit thinking those of us who play elsewhere are "afraid", "hiding", someone has used "cowards" before... it is all Horse hockey. we have a myriad of reasons why we don't.

I get it,

Id be offended too.

I think if he edited the title of the thread the message in his post would be far less offensive.

I think hes genuinley trying to mean well..he just..did it really, really badly.

*facepalm.

Odd how you never see similar adverts to join Solo or Private Groups.

Why is that?

I frequent a fairly busy area of the galaxy in open, near some of the starting areas, so i see alot of commanders there. I hardly ever meet anyone in that area in PG and of course not in solo, so i find playing in open in that area fun. More so than solo or PG.
I used to play mainly in pg but have recently supported a player faction and part of their roleplay ethos is to play in open and i think i prefer it.

I'll be honest; The reason I don't play in open is because of greifers/gankers/murder hobos, or whatever they are called these days. However, it's not because I'm afraid (I have enough credits to rebuy my most expensive ship 400 times over, so losing a ship is no big deal), no, it's because of what they represent. IMO they represent pretty much the worst ED has to offer, because they keep themselves entertained by making other players miserable (this seems to be more or less their only reason for playing), and I for one, absolutely refuse to be a potential source of entertainment for these kinds of "people".

Advantanges of Open: People
Disadvantages of Open: People

Advantages of PG: Only people who you can trust more or less and probably have agreed rules on.
Disadvantages of PG: For some, less people is a disadvantage.

Advantages of Solo: No other people.

Thank you for your opinion man.
Honestly I am glad we hear something positive for once. I logged over 2300 hours in Open and I find, its at large a friendly place, met some cool and helpful friends there.
Rep to you Sir
