Punishment

I didnt say youre an idiot, it can happen that one gets stuck in the mailslot. Mind to share the video? Its just the only reasonable explanation because there is no such thing as a force field, im a professional criminal, i should know ;)

So yes you did shoot a clean ship, it doesnt matter if you have targeted it or not. Combat is absolutly viable, trigger discipline and lots of situational awareness is key here.

And for being unable to pay off the bounty/fine if your notority is zero that really sounds like a bug. Just look at the bug section of the forum, lots of cmdrs have that problem but honestly i havent read them all so i cant really say anything about that.

I guess youre playing on PC? Have you checked your flight log? Every event is registered there so take a look, possible that it help you to find out what happend.

That’s kimda weird and seems to be behaving inconsitantly to me. I took a wing massacre mission once, shot at a wanted ship (didn’t realize it was a minor faction authority vessel, but was wanted all the same) took a bounty and waited it out, paid it off and came back. The next time I was shooting at a pirate, and A federal auth vessel whipped up between me and my target just as I pulled the trigger and it got my frag cannon right in the face. No fine, just a warning to ‘stow my weapons, I’m not your enemy’.
To OP tho, you shouldn’t still be wanted after the pay off at the DC, go to a IF, relog so long as your noteriety is zero, and try to pay it off there. I’ve had a few stuck fines and relogging to pay them has always worked for me.

Alright, let's take it one step at a time.

Tonight, I got a new navy mission (I’m ranking up at the moment to get a corvette). The mission, take out a single pirate in my home system. Humm, I’m in a python so I could.... go on then.

So far so good.

Got there, Scanned them, they attacked me first, in fact I allowed my shield to go down before I even got my guns out.

While not entirely necessary to let your shields drop, still so far so good. The second a ship turns red however you're usually weapons free to retaliate. You can even start firing once you see the "WANTED" and "MISSION TARGET" in the target data after scanning.

A bit of dog fighting, shields back up, cool. Nope, an NPC ship then flies in front of me and I get a bounty.

Ah. Okay. So System Authority got stupid and you didn't watch your trigger finger.

Under the new system there's a bit more leniency for "Friendly Fire". Still you have to be mindful of the ships and as soon as you see a System Authority cross your path, stop firing until you can mind the gap between the Police and the felon. It sounds like you picked up an "Assault" bounty. You'll still get credit as long as you're doing significant damage so no need to worry about the Police "Kill Stealing".

I killed the pirate and made to get out of there, I didn’t make it and ended up in a detention centre. 200 cr bounty, 7m rebuy. Humm, that sucks as I didn’t actually do anything wrong.

Again it sounds like you picked up an "Assault" bounty and that's why the Police turned on you. So you actually DID do something wrong. But not a big deal.

Travel back to hand in my mission (24 jumps and 7m lighter) and have to silent run in as I’m wanted.

Okay, hold up. You should not be wanted after a visit to the Detention Center. When you pay off your rebuy in Detention that should have cleared all your bounties as well letting you start fresh. THAT sounds like a bug you need to report. Did you pay off the bounty in your respawn or did you uncheck anything?

Hand in mission and try to pay bounty. Nope, mission redeemed but I can’t pay the 200cr.

Yeah you can't pay off a bounty at the stations anymore. They only accept fines. Bounties have to be paid off at the Intersteller Contact I believe.

Attempt to leave in silent running, nope letterbox is force fielded to prevent me leaving. Die again, another 7m. Buy back puts me 24 jumps away again! My bounty is now 600cr and I can’t pay it or go home.

....Yeah you got stuck in the mailslot and fined for obstruction the station which destroyed you. There is no "forcefield" mechanic to trap people. It sounds like you were flying your Python too low and the bottom part of the wings got stuck against the slot. Deploying landing gear and then retracting it can fix the problem if reverse thrust doesn't get you unstuck.

My point...... it’s now completely broken for me to play this game. I am 43 and played the original as a child on the bbc micro. I just want to have fun and work towards better things. A simple navy rank mission shouldn’t mess you up this bad because of an NPC that flies like a moron!

Unfortunately that's just how Elite is some days. Some days everything is good. Other days things just snowball into a pile of suck.

Anyone know how I could fix this crap situation or should I just delete the game and live a normal elite free life?

First rule of Space Travel. Don't Panic.

Find a Low Security system that has a Intersteller Broker. They can pay off your bounty which should fix your problem. If they don't then for some reason you have Notority which should not be the case since your infractions didn't involve killing anyone. If you do then lay low for awhile in another system and come back when it hit's Zero.

You can always contact support and explain your situation with the bugs resulting from your visits to the Detention Center not clearing.

Worst Case scenario? You can clear your save from the main menu. You'll have to start completely over back in a Freewinder with 1000 credits but it's a clean start. No reason to do a full uninstall.

Trigger discipline is always a problem in cases like this. You've got to maintain awareness of where your allies are in addition to your targets. If your allies are getting too close to getting between you and your target, finger off the trigger. Close the distance between you and your target to open up some room where you can fire without hitting anything you shouldn't.

You can always ask any combat vets to mentor you in-game. We're a friendly bunch for the most part as long as the game doesn't break you.

Not all bounties Adhock. My understanding of the new C & P - Just the bounty issued by the faction where you got killed. Still need to IF the rest.

Repped because you took time to help the Op instead of joining the chorus of unhelpful posters mocking them.

If I ever hit an unwanted ship, I immediately get the heck out of there and go pay it off. No exceptions. Never stick around because even if you don't get destroyed, if the ship you hit gets destroyed (even by another ship after you hit it), you can get stuck with a murder bounty.

It's a "small" problem with the current fines and bounty mechanics .

I think it's always worth talk to Frontier Elite support.
