If I also buy Elite Dangerous from PlayStation Store, can I play without DVD?

I originally bought the "Elite Dangerous Legendary Edition" for PS4 on DVD, which included Horizons Season Pass and 1000 Frontier Points. And my PS4 Pro game installation has been updated various times through to the latest v.3.0.2
Because I play all the time, I now wish I had bought from the PlayStation Store so that I do not need to have the DVD disc inserted to launch the game.

So here is the question ... if I now buy the basic "Elite Dangerous" PS4 download version from the PlayStation Store:

(a) Will that trash my existing installation or CMDR data save ?
(b) Will I then be able to play without any DVD inserted ?

Maybe somebody has actually done that with some PS4 game and can answer those questions ?

I'd say because all your important data is savd at FDev, and inso much as the digital file one downloads has the entire version if one buys the total package, which includes the horizon package; Shouldn't be a problem. I don't believe buy the basic package would allow what you current horizon package to continue to work. Basically it would be just like myself doing a total reinstall. I had to do a total reinstall and lost nothing in the process; But time. But then I had bought the digital copy and not the disk.

Your Commander data is stored on our servers so that will all be fine.

By buying the game from the PlayStation Store you should be able to play it without the disc inserted, but it may require a re-install (has anyone else done this recently? It's been a while since I tried it!). You should have access to Horizons, too, as the disc version included a redeemable code for that anyway. :)

I've been curious as well, realizing I should have purchased the digital version as opposed to the Disc. If anyone does manage to "install" Elite Dangerous Horizons Digital over the disc version I'd be interested in the outcome as well.

Like I sais prior, the digital version will work fine. For a clean new copy, delete all the files you presently have on your ps4. IF you purchase the entire package which includes the horizon package(forgot the name). It will preform the most up to date version of ED, no problem.

One doesn't have to do an clean install, one can simply purchase the full version and install it. It will over write the game as it is presently. Basically it will delete the copy you have, and install the new version.

Once done, the disk is no longer needed. Store away or sell it. Once you purchase a digital copy from sony, you can download it again and again and ... as often as you wish. There will be a link of sorts put in your ps4 library. If and when you should ever want it, go to library and there it will be.

Going from Disc to Download one would have to uninstall the game (the disc version) from the PS4, then download the new digital game, install and play.

And once done, DO NOT INSTALL THE DISK ever again. Shelve it or sell it, it won't be needed ever again. But be prepared for a lengthly down load and install, even with a fast connection. Mine isn't fast and it took some 12 hours. But then I've only got what use to be called a dial up connection.

Yeah, I had to backup my save data (just in case), uninstall the disc version, redownload/install digital and then do the update. Once it was done downloading, I moved my save data back into the system, checked my trophies and fired up the game (just for testing purposes, I am at work..) and all is good.

I can also confirm this works. I had ED on disk on PS4. Decided to get the download version as I was getting fed up with ejecting one disk to play another game, then having to insert ED disk to play game. I uninstalled the disk version of ED from my PS4. I then purchased and downloaded the electronic version, started the game, and all my settings and save stuff was there, and i was able to pick up from where I left off.

Thank you for all those responses ... I appreciate the info.

PlayStation Store in Australia advertise:
  1. AUD$30.95 : Elite Dangerous, Full Game. (Not really; no Horizons)
    and
  2. AUD$75.95 : Elite Dangerous Commander Deluxe Edition bundle. Includes Horizons + collection of items to customise ship.

For me to convert from DVD to Digital version, equivalent to what I have already paid for on DVD, it seems (1) does not include Horizons, so is not an option, if I understand correctly. Although (for me) the store marks "Horizons Season Pass" add-on as "Purchased".
Thus I would have to pay (2) full price $75.95 again ... which is just not a fair deal.

Surely Sony, the PlayStation Store and Game Authors will recognise that, sometimes, PS4 players may indeed like to convert a game from DVD to Digital Version ?
WHY is there no standard procedure offered, with a Price Discount Code, to do exactly that ?
OR, to put it another way, isn't that a fair and sensible idea?

As is, with Discount Code, you get another $ale. Without, you get $0.00

When I purchased the digital version here in North America, it was on sale for $39.99, so I lucked out (this week, the sale ended on the 15th). Quite honestly, it's nice knowing that all I have to do is select and play, I don't miss swapping the disc in and out.

You won't need to purchase (2) in order to have Horizons access. As stormy mentioned; if you buy option (1) you will still have Horizons access as when you redeemed the code that came with the disc it gave you a digital Season Pass. This is why it's showing as "Purchased" for you on the store.

Think of it like a digital sticker that stays on your console and tells the "base game" that you have Horizons. Trading in the disc does not trade in your Season Pass.

I used to buy al games on dvd - then 1 day just decided to buy one digitally....

never bought another game on physical media again - it is so nice to not have to get up out of your comfy seat to swap disks when changing games...

(I am soooooo lazy!)

I too now buy on digital, not only because I too am too lazy to change discs, but if you lose the disc you need to purchase a new one. With digital downloads you can just download it again from your purchase library.

Following advice received here, today I deleted my DVD install and purchased the (1) Elite Dangerous, Full Game digital download version ($30.95) from the PlayStation Store. Big overnight download on slow ADSL internet here.

Install went smooth, settings and CMDR data retained, very simple procedure and back in black playing Elite Dangerous with no DVD.
Thanks for the help !
