Broken graphics make the game unplayable!

Dear NafFdev,

As you will clearly see from this image below the words I am typing, the level of graphical infidelity has reached immersion-breaking levels of ineptitudinous rediculicity!

Yes I know! Shocking, is it not?!?!

I am somehow expected to believe that this happy little planetoid is going to toddle along its orbit, in a completely straght line, for another couple of miles, or whatever, and then suddenly and without warning, take a sharp right without even bothering to indicate to any following traffic its intention to do so!

I will have you know that I am no slouch when it comes to the intricate workings of physics, having tripped over my own foot several times in the past and fallen, predictably, to the ground on each and every occasion! I have also taken the liberty of conferring with a notable expert on the subject, in this case, my cat, and we have found ourselves in total and unequivicabubble agreement that orbits should be roundly curved in a disculous and circularatory fashion.

This will not stand, I tell you! Absolutlely NOT STAND!!!!

I have forthwith started uninstallation proceedings, with the full and unintelligible intention to take this matter further. YES! I will be writing a formal letter of complaintinous and accusatory drivel to my MP! Furthermore, I will be closing my Steam account, seliing my PC, cancelling the internet and disowning my own children!!! I expect that, under the obviously embarrassing circumstances, the so-called Mr Braben will be returning his clearly undeserved O B E Kenobi, and letting her gracious majestical see that it is recycled over to someone more deserving of its honourousness!

All those in favour of an end to this kind of nonsense can haz all ma stuff!!!

Yours incadescently,

Oss133

OP, you are a fun one.

I hope that you took some time to actually change your point of reference around that planet. As I expect you must have.

But, to put this into easy terms. If you look at the edge of a cup straight across on the top. It will not look like a circle. If you slowly tip it towards you, it will look like it is taking a sharp turn at the left and right sides. Only when you look straight down on the cup, does it then look like a circle. (this example is not relevant for square or flat cups. If you have a flat cup, you should be ashamed! ;)

Speaking as someone who has never played with "Orbital Lines" turned on due to how it destroys any sense of realism, I have no idea what the OP is ranting on about. :S

Are they saying that they are incapable of making a proper approach to a planet or station unless they have this "Training Wheel" feature turned on? And now for some reason, the Training Wheels have partially come off the ship?

My advice would be to turn that garbage off and use common sense instead. :)

Breathe boy. Orbit lines are sometimes nice if you want to see the structure of a system, not everything has to be turned into 'git gud scrub'.

I quite like the planets orbiting on a slack twangy guitar string.
I can almost see the creators finger flicking it.
Boingboingboingboing.:D

Hey now!

I'm not the one having a mental breakdown over a feature that underlines the obvious. ;) You can see the structure of the system with the System Map. No need to pollute the view out your cockpit glass with a bigger version that extends so far beyond the boundaries of your HUD that any chance of it being mistaken for something non-arcadey and credible just ain't gonna happen.

Especially if it isn't working properly. Which I must assume is the entire point of this thread, right?

As I said... I wouldn't know.

I took one look at Orbital Lines the same day I installed the game, and immediately turned it off. I also removed all traces of it from my bindings file, just to make absolutely sure I never had to look at that "Hand Holdy Abomination" for a second time! :D

Dude, you should give a thought to Anger Management sessions. You will do ALL THAT because of physics?! Hell I agree with you, but the way you lost it on your last paragraph sounds like you haven't been playing the game. There is a

%^&() load of other problems with this game to get ANGRY at... physics definitely not being in the priority list

I've noticed it, but it doesn't really bother me.

I think it's just an artifact of how ED draws orbit ellipses. Graphic cards don't draw an actual ellipse, instead they draw a bunch of line segments. To me, it looks like an issue with FD's "flattener" algorithm, which converts curves to line segments.

Although it looks very weird at times, it might actually be the correct projection. Ever notice how spherical objects in-game are stretched at the margins of your display? That is actually correct from a CGI point-of-view. The image is "projected" onto a plane; to prevent that stretching, you'd need a slice of a sphere for your display (it's curved in both x and y). You'd also need to project the CGI image onto a curved surface to generate a suitable image.

Well played, OP. Very well played.

The number of replies that either show a complete lack of understanding of your post and/or the way orbits, or indeed circles, look from varying perspectives is, in all honesty, astounding....

Well played once more sir. Have some rep.
