Just tried my first 3.03 skimmer mission

I just finished one. It wasn't any different from what I remember? Except the skimmers were all there at the target, and I think they respawned once. They dropped just as fast, and barely scratched the shields (put 4 pips to shields when under fire people. It works the same in the SRV).

The pay was decent. Worth doing, but not way out of line.

/shrug. I'm not seeing the problem, peeps. Fun was had; money was made.

Fun? Not when the SRV makes you nauseous.

The SRV makes you nauseous but flying doesn't? Huh. I would try lowing the field of view by a lot and see if that helps. It's peripheral vision that usually makes people carsick. If you're in VR, there's a setting that locks the view at the horizon, which I've heard helps (I don't do VR... yet).

And as Frenotx has pointed out, you can still do these missions from your ship. Just land, deploy & reboard the SRV close to the base. The skimmers will activate and you can missile / fixed beam them to death. I have a ship specifically built for this, but I just wanted to test if the SRV fights themselves had changed at all. Doesn't seem like it, on either the SRV end or the skimmer end- with the exception that the skimmers respawn.

Tip for anyone doing SRV combat- the standard driving view is terrible for it. Jump into turret mode.

If the base looks too heavily defended, then you can just search for skimmers in the surrounding area. I believe that all skimmers within 100km or so of the base will be from the same faction. I've completed many skimmer missions this way, and you get to collect materials too. :)

Aye

Just tried a Skimmer mission to see the hubbub

Skimmers in the same Jurisidction as the Target count and are often wanted too so earn a bounty rather than give you one

you miss the point... this isnt the first time they do this kind of thing... and how does it make no sense to destroy them this way? why do you think real life drones exist? Hell what got Trump elected was him saying he will simply bomb the terrorist instead of sending ground troops...

Because this is a game, you design it so the cheesiest, lamest tactics arent also the best. Fwiw: trump got elected because the US forgot to propery fund public education for too many decades. :p

Tell me more?

I have tried with a Sidey to get close enough to interact with the data terminal but no dice

Duh. My brain appears to have been absent for my previous comment. :D So many skimmer threads!

You're right, of course. You need the SRV to scan the data point. For some reason I was in skimmer massacre mission mode, where you don't. :)

What is your combat level? Pretty high I would guess.

Try it as a beginner like me (I'm only a Novice) at a high security station then you will see what the problem is.

Please don't suggest not choosing high security stations because there is no way of knowing what the security level is until you get to the system. Even if you select missions which are at or below your level, the stations can be high security and you will get pounded.

A high security station will have an npc patrol ship. Are you just equipped with dumbfire missiles? Good luck if you decide to take on the npc.

The station security will detect your ship at 4k distance and will open up on you and have your shields down before you even get into range yourself.

Lol, I was wondering if anyone else had issues with this. They should give a warning message and supply a box of motion sickness tablets with every copy of Horizons.

I love driving the SRV in VR. Though I am thankful that so far I haven't encountered nausea in any VR game.

As was pointed out, there are some settings you can play with that may help alleviate nausea, though it does seem that some people are more susceptible to it than others.

Got a skimmer mission..
1. Jumped to the base, where the skimmers where
a. A ship was patrolling.
b. The base, no-fly-zone range was changed to a few km out, so i came under fire while getting closer.
c. Put a cannon shell into the base power-plant and killed the patrol-ship.
2. As i got to about 50-200m of the base (in my ship) the skimmers spawned.
3. Killed the skimmers, while in my ship.
4. Reward = 8millions for that mission.

overall, i think that the mission was more interresting to do this way, i had to use a ship that could take fire, kill a patrol-ship, could disable the base, and still have rockets for the skimmers. And the reward was nice.

python, prismatic shield, thermal resist: 35% (upgraded as a reinforced), mission done with 92% Hull left.

For 4.8 million (iirc) credits.

Skimmers didnt show till i went in with an srv (despite practically landing my ship in the middle of the compound) then i was surrounded by them. Took out 2, got stuck in a piece of scenery and picked to death by the remaining skimmers.

So congrats FD, you have managed to make the ever shrinking list of fun things to do in elite dangerous one item shorter.

No more store dollars for you :)

There are several ways to finish skimmer missions easily for the clever player. Not by exploits or abuse mind you, but you can use shock and awe, a little tinkering, clever outfitting or even by being willing to spend a bit more time.

So I think they're pretty cool now.

Nice post, sir.

What building is the power plant? I usually use a smaller mission-runner for these missions, and don't have much time to examine the scenery when approaching.

land near site... go bug skimmers in SRV. Run back into your ships shields and finish em off. Whats hard ?

That's not a problem that FD can help you with. The SRV is fine for me, I love driving around in VR on planets. Though of course, for planetary scan missions you don't actually need to use your SRV. ;)

I am aware it's not something FDev can fix, I just want other options to complete missions other than the one I despise.

In my head I've convinced myself that we have inertial dampners in our ships, Yes, I am aware the official line is they don't exist. Can't get my head to accept that in the SRV.

In turret mode controlling your direction/speed is nearly impossible. (oddly, I have less nausea in turret mode than regular, but it's still there)

It will likely go away if you spend enough time in the SRV, did for me at least. Though it will return a bit if it goes a long time without driving it.

This actually sounds quite fun/cool - missions where you have to be genuinely strategic in your approach! This is what's desperately lacking in space combat missions in this game...

The building that i am pointing at is the powerplant.

I do see some changes to the amount of skimmers/guardians that spawn and the rate. Both are nerfed at the base with +1 security.
Maybe it is different at higher security ?

You landed in the middle of the settlement knowing there would be Skimmers (because it's called "Skimmer mission" for a reason), and then complain about Skimmers attacking you. Hm.
