Got ED, got a Rift... happy me! :)

what are the selling points between the rift and the Vive(?) - I'm assuming there's hardly anything between the 2 products and both do VR as well as each other but offer individual traits?

Well, price aside (if you include the price then it's really hard not to say that the Rift wins hands down) - the Rift is lighter and some would say more comfortable, the Oculus Touch controllers are far more elegant devices than the Vive wands, the Vive tracking devices are somewhat better for roomscale (although that gap has closed a lot since the initial Oculus release I would say), many people say the Vive is easier to set up (although personally I found the Rift an absolute doddle), the Vive requires less USB ports and the Vive has an external camera (although I'm not sure it's proved to be that useful). Graphically I think it's down to personal preference. The Rift has its "god rays" while the Vive may have some focus issues re: readability of text. I believe the Vive has (on paper at least) a wider field of view (although factors such as how close the HMD fits against your face tend to affect this and in practice I'm not sure there's a huge amount of difference). I've heard people say that in the Rift the galaxy seems to stretch to infinity while in the Vive there's a sense of a skybox at a fixed distance (can't vouch for that). I think I've seen claims that the black of space is a bit washed out in the Rift compared to the Vive (although you can improve that greatly by tweaking gamma and HUD colour settings). The Vive Pro has been announced (for £800!) while any kind of Rift 2 has yet to make a commercial appearance (but I dare say it soon will).

Errr - I've tried both and I prefer the Rift. That said, and again, ignoring the price difference, both products are excellent and it may well come down to personal taste.

Some comparison reviews ...

OP.

Welcome to the Third Dimension. You’ll like it here.

At the moment, I would say the main difference are the Oculous Touch controllers, which I’d say are better than the Vive Wands, and the fact that the Vive is more comfortable to wear with glasses. I got the Vive originally for room scale, but from what I’ve seen of the Touch controllers, I like how they handle a greater range of hand positions.

I’m holding out for the true Next Gen headsets, once they can get foveated rendering working well. I want the better resolution that 4K (or 8K) headsets can bring to the table, without having to pay for a high end graphics card. Hopefully by that time, some of the experimental hand tracking technology out there will be ready for commercial release.

I've played a lot of games in VR, but I always come back to ED... There's just something about the epic scale of everything in ED that makes me return, time after time.. It's so wierd that in the two years I've had my oculus, nothing has unseated VR as the premier experience of how a proper VR game -and not one of those novelty VR showcases- should be made... Props to Star Treck Bridge Crew, though...

I use Dr. Kaii's ED Profiler One click to flip between VR and 2D settings.... Wonderful stuff...

As for graphics settings 1.25x super sampling makes everything clearer....
You can remove antialiasing if you supersample to claim a bit of the performance back. Also you can reduce draw distance in VR because you can't see that far, anyway...

Finally, try using one of Kai's VR profiles that includes green in the HUD colours (Teal/Green/Cyan/White) are great because the Rift's pentile grid has twice as many green pixels as red and blue, making text look much, much smoother...

Welcome to the VR Fold....

Like Max Factor, I'm waiting for the Pimax "8K", although a little concerned at the 80Hz frame rate I'm still rather excited.

Now, if only we could use the touch controls or positional gloves to actually touch stuff in the cockpit.

In my opinion (having owned both), the Vive wins hands down for room scale VR. Its tracking is superb, and it's easy to set up.

However, for E: D particularly, and pretty much any game that doesn't use room-scale - well, then the Rift is king. Rift seems to have better resolution in E: D (menus were blurred in the Vive, not so in the Rift) - whether this is down to FoV or not I have no idea (I presume it is, as technically the devices should be very similar). Also, the Vive is heavy. Noticeably so when you have a Rift to compare to. Vive is also expensive by comparison.

Yep, ED in VR is just amazing. Now I am just waiting for the Pimax 8K and the need to upgrade my GPU, CPU, motherboard, Ram etc.

I can't get bored of it. Even just cruising in supercruise feels great.

The 3D surround sound using DTS is some of the best in game sound I've ever experienced... Love it!

I agree on the VR. This game more than any other games shows what a fantastic medium VR is.

I still experience sitting there in this game going "woaaaaah!" at some of the vistas. Elite in VR is one of the most awesome ways to listen to music I have found. Just explore the galaxy, find a nice scenery... kick back and listen to an album.

Fighting in VR is absolutely fantastic.

If there is one thing I would wish for, it is for a viable ship on the scale of the ship-launched fighters being available. Flying those in VR is absolutely intense, and I regularly find myself piloting the fighter and letting the crew pilot the mothership.... but it would be awesome to be able to do it without thinking so much of the mothership, because you know... rebuys.

I was seriously thinking of getting a Rift seeing as they are £399 and in stock at my local Argos

I've finally grinded enough £££ since my boss has un-nerfed my wages, but scared if I spend it on a Rift then something will cause a rebuy on my car :D

That awkward moment when your RL turns into a mere extension of your ED existence.

it is indeed a whole different game. couldn't recommend enough. i only play with the rift.

(actually, i doubt i would be playing elite if it weren't for vr).

just so you know how much i love it, i'm just getting comfy with my crosswind pedals and starting to love them, and awaiting the arrival next week of my dual vpc mongoose sticks and butt kicker (and feel almost no guilt whatsoever!). with that gear, who needs a stinking engineer!?

elite: really stupid broken safely ignorable game built around an awesome and brilliant experience. indeed, thanks frontier.

I happily run on a DK2 without using a HOTAS. 90% of my keybinds are on the left hand so I feel for the bump on the F key and I don't need to look at the keyboard. For the occasional, non-combat keybinds I use the arrow key cluster and the 6-keys above it because I can feel those easily without looking. The alternative for some people would be to get a mouse with more buttons but I'm not keen on those MMO mice because all the buttons are under the thumb, exactly where I squeeze the mouse.

HOWEVER, I find the DK2 uncomfortable for long stints. I'll use it for 45m in a REZ or something but if I spend more than about 90 minutes in VR it really screws up my eyes and leaves marks on my face. I know the CV1 is lighter but it still gets pressed into your face by the elasticated headstraps.

Welcome to the REAL Elite Dangerous! Just started a 2 week vacation and am expecting the new (and hopefully improved) x56 HOTAS to land on my doorstep any minute :)

See you in the black!

The advantage of the CV1 is you can get bits for it
