I just accidentally killed an NPC. I saw that wanted ASP-Scout in a wanted wing of 2. Before engaging, I scanned the other winged ship. Then I went back to the ASP, but there was another ASP-S close-by, a clean one. So, I selected the wrong ship, and got my engineered Python cutting through its hull quicker than I could say ooops... My fault.
I got a 5400cr bounty. Ok, that's just right. I did stupid. I need to go to interstellar factors. Makes sense. But, I can't pay off, because I'm "notorious" level 1. Having a game penalty for stupid playing, that's how games work.. But a several hours long real-world time penalty, forcing me to be somewhat active at my PC... well... That's creepy.
Now I have to wait. Two hours. The disturbing thing here for me is NOT that I couldn't find other things to do in a combat-fit, but wanted Python, although the choice is already a bit limited with outfitting locked (almost?) everywhere (I tried in anarchy, but was still locked there), and always having a clean NPC hunter behind me in every RES, who's trying to make me even more, er.. notorious..
But, what really bugs me is this:
I find it disturbing that ED tries to push into my spare time, and that means pushing into sort of what I feel is my "private sphere". When I find a few hours of spare time, and know I will have to quit because of real-life in a few hours, I don't want to get locked out from my current goal for a time that can easily extend my break until next weekend. When playing games, it must be ME who dictates when I play, what I play. Of course there are rules and limitations, otherwise it's boring, but a two hour penalty already makes me feel hard-pressed somehow, and not in an exciting or entertaining manner.
Maybe the time penalties should be lower, or maybe the progression should not be linear 2 hours per level. I think, starting with 0-time penalty at N1 (flying to an IF already takes enough time), and then adding 15 minutes first a N2, increasing to steps of 1 hour per level. So, the severe penalties would be at a point where a player could actively decide if they want to go that path, not by accident or inexperience.
