Where are they now?

Where have all the ancients gone?
Long time passing...
Where have all those relics gone?
Long time ago...
Where have all the 'splorers gone?
They're off to Beagle every one,
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Never!

But you are a name I have followed behind, when exploring.

It must be a couple of years since I found an untagged star/planet in the bubble. Old Duck will not find my forum handle on anything as I only use my initials here. My Commander name is in small print in my sig.
Justin Joying-McSelf is my in game name. And I still do.

The one I always see is Allitnil all over the galaxy. I think I just saw him posting in the forum here not too long ago as well...

A fair number are still around just not as active.
Names I know off the top of my head...

Zulu Romeo, Erimus Kamzel, Allitnil, Anuranium, Wishblend, Rukmerot, Agony Aunt, Jackie Silver, Corbin Moran, Satsuma... and a fair number of others. You'll usually find them in FleetComm private group and the associated Discord.

I still chat with Anuranium on ED from time to time when he comes on.

My closest discovery is about 24ly from the Bubble. I tend to start close and work my way out. I've not found anything exotic like an ELW that close, but I have found entire undiscovered secondary solar systems at real stars (HIPs) which greatly surprised me, as I expected these would have been all snatched up by now.
One can still make surprising 'first-to-finds'. Mid-January in the year of our Lord (yes, this year), I stumbled into the system of RT Leonis Minoris, just about 1000 LY from the very Sol. Nice Place, I thought, wonder who was first? Untagged?! In the middle of a tagged ocean! Hurray!
There are no short supply of HIPsters systems. You can still find unvisited ones. I almost felt ashamed over how many I have tagged, but then glancing around the esteemed members here that literally been everywhere. Naah, still a junior I am. :)

Heh. I have a listed of potential HIP and HD systems that I pulled from Simbad/Vizier and cross checked with edsm (which of course is a somewhat limited resource for this purpose as not everyone uses it or can access it) that I've been using to search for unvisited catalogue stars - I need to update it with more recent edsm data and then might post a new version as a Google doc. I found one with it recently out near(ish) Colonia, certainly the furthest catalogue star I've tagged.

Cool!

With such methods as using the Cambridge Star Atlas 'a few years back' edition, browse, scroll and point and then set course, I feel I should perhaps, at the very least, upgrade soon. :D

I'm a PS4 player, so you won't find any of my discoveries on EDSM :(

Man, this thread makes me wish I started playing a lot sooner. I'm a kickstarter backer and everything, but I was busy with other things when the game was going through those early tests and into release. I only started seriously playing a year ago. Early bird gets the worm, and I missed it. ;)

To be fair, I knew that would be the case, but at the same time, there's some benefit to waiting for a game to mature a bit more before getting started. I had a lot more to do, and a lot more to get me excited about logging in each day.

I watched a lot of the dev update videos at the time though, and I remember seeing the galmap go through those iterations with small amounts of bubble systems, before being expanded. It was cool to watch it grow.

Star Falcon is from Elite Games, a Russian Elite and other space sim site. (You know, the place where the EG Pilots came from, and got Yuri Grom into PowerPlay.) Looking at it now, he was quite active there up until a year ago, when he seems to have vanished. I hope nothing bad happened to him.

And there you have it - one mystery gives way to another :)

Although I started playing early in the summer of 2014, it was a couple of months latter before I started to play it regularly (when I got a joystick :p).
Anyway, as far as 1st tagged discoveries goes, I have a whole 3 in the bubble ;) (LHS 151 B, Mboyan A 6, & Tascheter Sector WK-O a6-3), & I have quite a few out of the bubble of course, random ones on my 1st exploration trip (to Betelguese, then the Eskimo nebula), 2 trips to The Formidine Rift (Eafots) & 1 beyond it where I found a Herbig star , 1 aborted trip to Colonia in a fully loaded Python! (1/4 of the way :p), oh & quite a few sort of straight down from that little Nebula near Sothis (NGC 623?) including my 1st, & so far only, ELW only about 600 LYs from the bubble (I think that was about 1 1/2 yrs ago). So I'm not a long range explorer, but tagged quite a few dozen systems, which means, chances are none of you have seen my name! Lol, oh btw, my cmdr name is Mark P Dorling.

Btw, some of many names I see out there, Mitsuma, Simon Winnard, & many more I can't remember  (looking at that list from MBs thread reminds me!), other than the aforementioned Star Falcon.

Since you asked, OP...I joined this forum in 2007, and signed up to Prem Beta in 2012. I burned out in early 2017 after roughly 1200 hours of in game time.

Elite Dangerous's main problem is that Development is disappointingly slow. Back in 2012, David Braben painted a picture of complexity far from what we actually got. I'm especially disappointed that we never got 'space legs'. DB's old youtube videos really sold the idea, and it was a long time before I realised that it just wasn't going to ever happen.

I've deffo had my money's worth (£125 at Kickstarter), and I've not entirely given up hope that Frontier will wow me again, but I don't expect it anymore.

Pretty much echoes my sentiments. I doubt I'll ever be spending any serious time in the game again without a good revamp of exploration WITHOUT making it a chore. Hell even something like the scan time has in my opinion always been too long, its always felt like a grind just scanning things. A lot of people will be severly p$ssed if atmospheric landings never make it into the game, and I certainly wouldn't bet my house on it ever coming to fruition.

Can't complain though, I've had my money's worth too even if I never play again.

This wasn't a rant, just a humble explorer's musing of the last few years.

Cheers guys, fly safe.
