How many of us?

Are we still a minority of a minority? Certainly consoles must have skewed the numbers even more than they were back in the day, but is there any way to get actual numbers of people playing in VR? These days we don't seem to be a niche market anymore or is that wishful thinking?

it's not huge.
But I'm certain it's a lot bigger than you'd first think.

There are plenty of hmd's out now that aren't too expensive, especially the rift at $350 that cost less than half of a decent monitor.

I agree.

I'm one of three people at my store that has a VR headset that I know about (though I was first), and I work discount retail. We even sell PSVR and (ugh) "google cardboard" compatible adapters.

That's holding VR back from becoming a little more mainstream is the high costs of high-end video cards. Those are not likely to come down in price until the digital currency bubble finally bursts.

Well, I'm firmly in the VR camp now. In fact I find it difficult to play ED any other way....except for the Guardian SRV ruins material collection, vomit bags at the ready.

Low.
But I'm a new VR player. A friend got a Vive a couple of months ago ( sad but true, for him ) I waited on news of the 'Pro' - news came and bought the Rift :D
Enjoying it a lot :) ( Rift is still £100 cheaper than the Vive even after the new price drop and the touch controllers are better than the vive controllers - room tracking is okay on rift for a small area - which is all I have anyway - not really a hard choice to make ).

I was pleasantly surprised at the number of CMDRs at Frontier Expo 2017 that have VR, when I spoke to them (admittedly it was a poor "survey", but I was only expecting one or two and instead lots of CMDRs I spoke to had an HMD).

absolutely, main hurdle for VR is all the other kit needed. And that was high before the whole coin mining mallarky.
And for games like ED or pcars I would consider a hotas or wheel absolutely mandatory.
I would not be able to play ed at all with mouse and keyboard, let alone drive around a track.
That would be an additional $500 easy.
And the longevity of play for the other titles are still not entirely brilliant.
Most vr games are still something I would have a hard time to be interested in past 10 hours.

I play in VR only, but I don't launch the game through steam so I wouldn't be counted in that stat.
It's only their users (not ED only), so if you have Steam, and take part in the survey, then you probably are still counted. I imagine the actual percentage of VR user is actually a bit higher, but maybe still less than 1%. I also imagine the percentage of VR users in ED is higher still.

Add me to the smal list.
got my rift for Christmas, but finally got around to setting it up over the weekend.
20 hours in on VR... and I hate playing the game normally now...
really works well with hotas and pedals...

now that Skyrim VR is to release in a week we'll hopefully see a larger number of people adopting it due to how popular this game is...

Yeah can't wait for skyrim vr in the current Bethesda regime.

*require script extender sold seperate - 980 tokens*

I was still spending half the time calibrating the first week with my vive.
Heck took me almost two to really find the perfect IPD.

Won’t really help you, but it may help others: Your optometrist can tell you what your IPD is. Just ask them during your next eye appointment. If you get a headset before then, here’s a method that also works pretty well.

My main problem was that the glasses converge the image as well.
in short no matter the ipd setting the test pattern would look sort of ok, even at 60-70mm.
Once I broke out some contacts I easily figured out I was best at about 64mm.

But yeah the glasses lie on the test patterns.
