Obsidian Ant NEW VIDEO - Crime and Punishment is Flawed

In his new video, Obsidian Ant talks about the new crime and punishment system and its flaws.

I think i completely agree with him, the problems with this system are many and most of them just silly and shouldn't have made it to live version.. but for some reason, here we are.

Agree 100%. The new system has taken the annoyance of stray friendly fire and turned it into a ridiculous drudge.

The inability to pay off low level fines and bounties in the system is just pathetic. Having to find an interstellar factor to pay off a 200 credit fine is ridiculous.

Clearly, there should be a threshold - below a couple of K, you should be able to pay off the fines in system at the regular contact. Above the threshold - fine, now kick in the blocked services, having to go somewhere to pay them off..

Right now we have the situation where the sanction for murder is the same as that for parking in the wrong bay. come on.

They fixed griefing by making the game grief you.

To be honest, I just really can't be bothered to watch his videos anymore.

That's quite a statement, considering how much OA has done to promote ED and present his ED vids and thoughts in a non biased way - or at least as unbiased as ED allows, because with topics like this, it obviously broken and no amount of paint can cover the cracks.

So, would you care to give your reasoning for your comment?

Or are you happy with the most obvious "Max factor is a known fanboi of ED and thus stating "he can't be bothered anymore" is probably down to knowing that Obsidian is once again publically highlighting the obvious flaws with the game, and you're just not "down with having it rubbed in your face."

I watch every single one (mostly those regarding E:D). It's always good to hear the point of view for a current events in the game from a seasoned player (and a fellow explorer). He's always very balanced and reasonable in his opinions, therefore when he started this particular vid with "I'm gonna be unusually blunt here..." I thought: uh-huh, the mess got him too. :D

I can understand what you mean. OA seems to have changed his attitude to ED and I'm not sure why. Before, he would just attribute the points in the video as slight annoyances where the revised C&P is still undergoing a work in progress. I still listen to his videos, but they are no longer the video series that used to cheer me up about the state and future hope of ED.

Bounties for things like trespassing is just silly.
How do you solve the issue of it needing to be a bounty to give the defences the ability to (legally) fire at you?

Otherwise it would be "hey, get away from our top secret information or we'll ... we'll ... we'll fine you again! See how you like having a 1000 Credit fine!".

In the old system, it was (unless you really did a lot of trespass in a short time) a 10-minute bounty, so it got you shot at until you left the system (and largely only mattered until you left the instance, of course), and then automatically relaxed to a fine. Some way to do that sort of thing in the new system might be needed.

Yeah, I am a known fan boy who sees a lot of issues with the game that would like to get fixed and improved. I can't be bothered because it is probably just stating the obvious. I was never a fan of the bounty on your ship idea in the first place. I don't like USS's mechanics. I don't like res sites or combat zones. I don't like the fact that the depth of the BGS has virtually no visual cues and a boom state looks no different to a plague or a war state. I can't stand the Jump and honk of exploring, oh but I am a fan boy.

Nice one Rafe. Thought you were better then that. ;)

Why is anyone surprised?

It's a well known assumption that the creators of ED DON'T ACTUALLY PLAY IT to any degree - because so many of the things that are in the game seem designed to really knark** off the player.

And those that do - well I have to assume they think they are good ideas - they must do, because games programmers surely can't be that stupid and out of touch with the sort of systems we have in real life. Yes I know, I know "reality sux" but the thing is - our Social systems, and least the nice, non "1984 style / prison camp" ones are the way they are because some of the stuff that's been tried before just doesn't work.

If FDev cared to pay a little attention to History, they would see that "dumbass systems" don't work, and in some cases have caused riots, and rebellions because they are a "step too far".

Small fines for bad parking and minor misdemeanors can be paid in many places locally, for pretty much everyone who lives in a conurbation of more than 500 people.

But FDev decided a parking fine requires you to drive to different city, miles away.

in 2018 you can sit in your own home and pay a fine, buy a pizza - or ANYTHING else you like to do.

But in 3304 with the age of interstellar travel and communications you have to physically schlep to someplace NOT LOCAL to pay a minor fine.

Like I said - why is anyone surpised?

What more evidence do people need that FDEv are out of touch with their playerbase?

**(english forum friendly slang for ffff annoying.)

I get the impression that OA is becoming impatient with ED now.
Some of his latest videos have a tinge of attitude about them.

When OA starts to turn dark and slip from the pure faith... ED maybe has some legitimate troubles.

Just want to clear this up before it goes any further. I'm still very much in love with Elite Dangerous - it's right in the top of my best games of all time. I also have a lot of faith in the future of Elite, although I perhaps don't express that quite as often as I once used to. But even this month alone I have released at least 6+ videos that are positive in nature, and one in particular that highlights some of the best (in my opinion) elements of the game.

I suspect that these critical videos stand out a bit more, because they are precisely that. They are critical.

Regarding the other issues for various content creators, I do understand how they feel, Cmdr Plater and DTEA raise some important issues that affect them directly. However, that said, I don't feel any frustration towards the game or Frontier.

When I make a video like this, it's because I'm calling it like I see it, whilst trying to put a balanced view point across. I never assume that I'm in the right, and I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with me. And more importantly I don't make these videos simply because I'm "following a trend" or "following the crowd". These are my views, and my thoughts. If I feel there's a problem with the game, I'm not going to be in denial about that.

For those that don't watch the videos - or don't like them, that is totally fine. It's your call. :)

Always appreciate everyone's feedback. And it always means so much to me that people enjoy my videos and continue to watch them. :)

I was out exploring, and to be honest, the changes to Elite with 3.0 in terms of mechanics like C&P, engineers, etc. appear to be so unnecessarily complex, that I didn't bother going through them.
Now I'm back at the bubble and I'm a bit afraid of taking on the activites.

The old system was confusing too, with it's fines and legacy fines and bounties and needing to wait for a timer to tick down and then jump away for some reason. It was weird. Just kind of resulted in the scenerio where you're bounty hunting, accidentally shooting a cop and then saying, "oh crud, looks like I have to quit playing for 7 days." It was bizarre. I'm glad it's gone.

New system isn't much of an improvement. Feels like everything is illegal. I got a tip off to scan some data. So I made the 200ly trek, landed, started to drive up to the place, suddenly I'm fined for trespassing. The tip off was illegal? That's for letting me know, tip off guy. Geez. So now I have to find someplace to pay that off too. Oh you forgot to request docking? Damn! That's a fine! And you might not be able to pay it here! Good grief. Fine, let me just get into my long jump range ship to go find a place, oh I can't change ships? I have to get there in my Corvette. Fine, I'll just upgrade to a better FSD. Oh I can't do that either? And it's 20 jumps away..... <esc> <quit>

But it doesn't have to be binary like that. They can add more under the covers besides "wanted=can shoot", "not wanted=no shoot"
What about a trespassing flag? If you're in the act of trespassing, then the base defenses can freely attack you. If you return fire, then you become officially wanted. If you get the data and leave without firing, then you only get the fine for trespass (and maybe a second larger fine for theft).
