I did so too and found this

This is just sooooo soooo sad... I don`t even know what to say... how can people become like this

I just don't understand how people can spend 6000 on a video game. Even on a released one, never mind one that is still in Alpha with an uncertain future. It just boggles my mind.

I can understand it, even though I find it bizarre. They're not just buying what they believe to be a dream. They're also buying status. To me it's a false type of status, but reading that backer's email, it oozes the feeling that he wanted to feel special.

Looks like Skaddens have filed the latest rebuttal.

As much as I can read or make any interpretation, it appears to say "Everything the other side said is wrong, uses invalid arguments and case law, is waffly and silly and we respectfully request the court tell them to jog on..."
Got a link?

Disposable cash. It's nice to have

6000 over so much time is not a lot of money for some people.

Roughly equivalent per annum to a 20 a day cigarette habit with a couple of pints of beer (UK prices).

To be fair though that comes with some health issues thrown in so arguably more value for money!

Could also be the monthly repayments on a modest used family car... I guess we have to understand other people have different lives and different priorities!

I was interested to see the BMM was part of the latest Sales. I do hope that means it might be released "on schedule" this year...

Ahh - those were the days! When PVP required you find someone willing to play, either keyboard sharing or taking turns on the same machine, progressing into serial linking and making a cable for your opponent (where your friend never a clue about baud rates or parity so you had to set that up too), and then into the realms of coax ISA cards, offsets and IRQ's, dodgy terminators and TV cable forced to work in T-pieces, and the frankly magical protocol lottery. It required cooperation, effort, time, but was richly rewarded with heaps of fun and as much Irn Bru and / or beer as you could get away with :D

Now, it's random pew-pew luzbunnies.

*Shudders* I tried Irn Bru once, when I was studying at Stirling University. I now understand why the Scots are so tough. One of my flatmates spilled some of the stuff on the carpet in my room . . . I swear it ate a hole in it, and gave me the evil eye afterwards. :D

Enough kidding. As to the "100 systems" claim referenced by Captain N -- I was under the impression that exactly ONE system is ready. Creating a 100 would either require PG, or hand-crafting them -- which sounds like a LOT of effort to me (if it was that easy, one has to ask why it hasn't been done already). Frankly, I would not be surprised if SC was released as a MVP with one system, with the promise of others to follow. Lots of people would lap that up. I've read in German forums lots of comments saying that SC is the cat's pyjama, the second coming, etc., so . . .

To quote Karl Lagerfeld: Spending 6000 on a video game is a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you spent 6000 on a video game. :D

Absolutely agree! Bizarre thought process isn't it! The level of emotional investment must be huge!

Mind you, don't forget - although not in the same league - there's folks who have put four figures into the FD shop just for optional ship and laser colours etc.

I have no doubt whatsoever that this idea has already been floated and they are just figuring out how to break the news to the community. I think fans would happily accept this as long as all the other features that they said would be fully realised could be done in that one system.

They've already started. "Each star system will have the same amount of content as 10 normal games..."

Well, my first foray into 3.1's PTU was not a runaway success... spawned a Cutlass Black (because in the PTU you can try out any ship), all was well, made it to D02 where my ship was waiting, got in via the loading ramp, hopped into the pilot's seat, pressed "Flight ready"... and nothing. Hard crash. A couple of minutes of faffing about in alt-tab, quit the launcher.

I'll have another go in a minute because obviously I'm scientific like that and one crash does not a hot mess make, but yeah - 3.1 from my first experience with it is categorically not the Jesus patch.

I once worked with a guy paying for 3 mmo subscriptions at the same time, who mentioned he didn’t have any furniture because he wanted to “be light” so he could pick up and leave, with his wife and 2 kids, at a moments notice. Later he let it slip he’d lost all their old furniture in an ugly eviction. Still though, had to have his WoW, Eve, and ??Conan I think?

Different priorities indeed. I don’t think so many as half of the whales have their priorities screwed on straight. In fact, I’d bet real money my former coworker is counted in their numbers.

It's hilarious that CiG are attempting to conceal their "open" development...
