Well, no, the only stats we get to see are the Steam stats and they suggest quite the opposite. Better to say for every 3x players that burn out there's maybe 2x new ones to replace them. Maybe. But I'd speculate further to say that the Steam numbers are mostly the hardcore player community who play almost daily, and that even their population is in a slow decline.

Speculate away. The only data we can really point at are the Steam numbers that show a gradual decline overall. This really shouldn't be surprising for a 3+ year old game.

You don't have stats on XB1 or PS4, so stop right there. There are also players on PC that bought the game direct, or from another source and will also NOT be listed on your fractional chart of current ED player activity.

NEXT!

I took a two year long break from elite. You probably need at least a few months. Recently I did just that from November until a few weeks ago. I’m not a big fan of the punishment & more punishment ‘improvements’ so I’ll probably take a long break again after I achieve Baron/Clipper.

Do you have stats from Xbox or PS4 to show.... anything? Nope, you do not. So what does that tell us?

Any-who, enough on this. Facts are what they are. Speculate away with hopeful thoughts but don't ignore the facts. And remember, the game is 3+ years old! It's a hard argument to make to say that the player base is actually getting bigger. Not for this "B" title game that was never fully finished; it's a very niche game. (If anything note all the recent posts with players saying they are buying a second account or even third...)

That based on the recent release of ED on PS4 and recent discount sales of the game through Non-Steam sources, I am more likely to be right than you are. ;)

How's that?

FYI: Those who trot out Steam Stats to make an argument generally get an immediate loss of at least 75% credibility in any further discussion of the subject around here. Just thought you might want to consider that for next time. :)

Oh! And one other fact you might want to consider regarding the use of Steam Stats for judging ED popularity...

ANY Steam bought copy of the game can be launched OUTSIDE of Steam using the ED Launcher that is included in the ED installation folder. Anyone who launches the game outside of the Steam client will not be tracked in your precious stats.

I am one of those players. Despite the actual number of hours I have put into the game over the last three years, which is in the thousands, according to Steam and my Steam client ED page, I have played Elite Dangerous a total of 64 Hours. ;)

The practice of using the direct launcher is incredibly common among Steam users who play ED, because we feel the game runs better without the Steam client being involved. Enough of us are out here to totally taint any true logging of the entire Steam purchased copies of Elite Dangerous.

So again... Your source is seriously flawed at predicting anything regarding actual player numbers/activity day to day, even among Steam Only versions of the game.

I forgot to highlight your anti-ED agenda above as well. ;) Credibility = 0

So ye - spent the whole week sitting at my computer.. and 'nearly' logging in to play Elite D. The only problem is - everytime i planned to play the game.. I COULDNT BRING MYSELF TO EVEN LOG IN.

The sad truth is that this game feels so much like a boring and endless job in an office, that after i got home from work.. i just couldnt do it!

I did finally manage to bring myself to log in today, and I spent couple hours in the game basically sitting in station then did a bit of mining. But honestly - most of the time i was watching youtube videos, listening to the radio or even watching TV while alt-tabbing. After couple hours, i'd had enough.

Ill be taking (another) year or two break from the game now, and ill come back in a couple of years to see if FDevs started listenin to the playerbase by then.. but judging by their track record; i seriously doubt it.

Sad really. Cya.

And no. U cant haz my stuffs ;-)

I don't care about Steam stats I know people are playing.

I just hope the next 6 years of the holy 10 year plan add some good computer game stuff to the stuffy computer program they made.

It looks AMAZING. The 'game' is rubbish. Phone-game stuff.

For shame FD

Eh, I haven't logged in for a long time and I know a lot of people in the same boat. RNGineers killed the game for me, and 3.0 was too little, too late.

Hoping FD eventually manage to transition from tech-demo to an enjoyable game.

The mission system and the background sim would need a significant re-work. It would almost make more sense just to make Elite 2 Space boogaloo and build it from the ground up with different systems in place that are more engaging and less grind oriented.

Honestly? It's pretty weak. Your intentions are pretty clear. You've offered nothing in your replies aside from garbage, really.

Yup. Looks great, but it's Farmville In Space.

I've been sayin it, ain't I been sayin it Miguel? Or not Miguel, depending on your name. That was a bad reference to independence Day! 😋

But yea, I've been saying it for over a year, it's more fun to think about playing Elite Dangerous than it actually is to PLAY Elite Dangerous.

I just can't bring myself to watch the new Blade Runner film despite everyone telling me how great it is. "NO!" I always respond, "The original was a masterpiece! You don't touch a masterpiece!"

OT but yea, I'd skip it. I just watched it this past weekend and regret it. It's no where near the masterpiece of the original. This new one is a bit of a mess.

Men no good at numbers, but doesnt slow decline normally mean numbers get like smaller? Average number of players for the last few months is about 50% higher than average. As in like bigger numbers. Peak players is up by about 100% the last few months. Such a decline, woe is us!

Where'd you go Sleu? You disappeared after I posted facts from Steam. Not surprising I guess.

On topic: OP I don't blame you for not playing. Beyond is turning out to be more of the same or worse. This game is totally in maintenance mode getting bare minimum attention. It's obvious based on what we've seen especially with the mess of bugs - so many small bugs and broken bits. Even 3.0.5 continues to have broken reverb audio - a bug from 2.4 that is unfixed. FDev are smart not investing time and effort beyond (see what I did there?) that required to sustain and create new store items.

I'm honestly starting to think you are right. I reckon maybe the player numbers are nowhere near where they hoped them to be by this stage, and they have basically given up on the game. I'm sure it will 'continue'..like many dead games do.. all the time they can make a bit of cash from it (and sell more micro-transactions).. but I'm pretty much fed up with it by now. Not particularly liking the look of much coming the way of the 'roadmap' either... I can't see their 'big headline' of squadrons doing anything much in terms of gameplay.. just like 3.0 new planet colours. Pointless.
Like i said.. Will check back a year or two (I've backed this from Beta) to see if anything improved. Only thing I will say about the game is the community is top notch. It's just so sad that the Dev's don't actually listen.
