Obsidian Ant NEW VIDEO - Crime and Punishment is Flawed

I've never presented my channel as a news channel. The latest "news and happens" is purely for the 3304 'news' series.

We've come a long way off topic when you are calling me out for integrity. :)

Sometimes I present an unbiased view. And sometimes I don't. Some of my videos are 100% purely biased opinion - I would never claim otherwise.

I don't have a problem with what you say, although I admit, I do struggle to take your method of discussion and approach seriously. You use the word 'hyperbole' a lot, yet I personally would apply it to how you structure your arguments. To each their own I guess.

Still always happy to read your thoughts and opinions though. :)

Your channel is followed primarily because it is a source of the latest news and keeps people up to date on any bits of Elite they might have missed. Without the news component, I seriously doubt if your channel would have more than a couple thousand (primarily explorer / newbie) subscribers. So yes, your channel is by all outward appearances a "news channel". That being said, you have never outright claimed that you are a journalist, but I do recall on several occasions that others (myself included) have petitioned you to present a certain view point, and more than once you've voiced objections at portraying content that wasn't objective and needed more info. In my assessment this gave you more credence because you were committed to presenting several sides of an issue. If you are now saying that your commitment to objectivity has vanished, I'll have to reduce my assessment of your channel to just another partisan voice on the Youtube echochamber.

If you'd like, you can check my record of posting on this forum. I have probably upwards of 10 thousand posts here, and maybe a couple dozen include the word "hyperbolic" (including this one). I say this so you know I choose my words very carefully so that they are pertinent to the discussion or argument at hand. Pertinent & measured, which is the definitional opposite of hyperbolic. If they seem to have a dramatic flair, that is just prose, and I can't help that any more than I can change the shape of my nose.

It's usually a deliberate ploy to take out speeding ships .... collide and die .... minimal cost to the assailant, maximum cost to you. Only one way to prevent this, as has been said already.

Is it the original velocity vector, or the resultant at collision that triggers the fine/bounty?

I am much more carefull about griefers when in Open, I was in a group this time.

Yes it looks someone bumped into me and died, maybe even the ship that station was shooting at so it was at few % hull...

Looks like going 110 instead of 100 cost a lot of time and nerves, and is a big no no.
Not sure if I am perfectly fine with that though...

Happens to me, by NPC, in solo.

Makes outposts look lots more attractive for doing business. As I am an explorer, this is a good thing.

Also, no ships that require large pads, please. That ramps up the risk factor for this.

C&P forces changes in gamestyle, on many levels.

I think the computer just looks at the speed of the ship as a number (as shown in the HUD). If "death caused" and "speed>100" Then "punish ship for murder" but I don't know how it is programmed.

Note that it took 3 seconds, to change you from a clumsy driver, to a murderer. Eight seconds later, you were dead.

Seems fair to Beige Squadron...until it happens to one of them.

That may well be. But, even cops in my heinous jurisdiction have been told, in writing, not to issue tickets for five miles an hour, or less, over the limit, because of the legal expense and hassle.

I can see being re-spawned in the brig will lead to the next phase of C&R which will be "Arbitration" or taking your case to court for resolution of excessive punishment for minor offences.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Let's try to stick to the topic of the video and not pivot into a meta debate about journalism and/or Ant's channel in general. As always stick to the subject of the post and not the poster(s). Thanks.

Oh well spotted ... it wasn't immediate (can't rep you at moment) .... I wonder what happened between

and

A double collision to make sure ?

That was npc ship, not the player.
I am not sure if it was the one station was shooting at few seconds before I passed the entrance or some other npc that was already low on hull % for any reason. I was not going that fast to kill someone who is at 100% even it was a sidewinder.
That guy died for whatever reason but as we colided few seconds before he died - I was marked as a murderer. I stoped as soon as we colided first time as I was not sure what was happening, so I doubt I actually killed him.

It was total mess for a few seconds as I passed the entrance, and I am still not sure what happened even after checking logs.

I just know that what happened to me is like driving 110km/h where there is 100km/h limit, and getting 2 year prison sentence for that.

It wasn't a deliberate ganking by a commander, or it would have been labelled Cmdr ScrumpyWizard6, so somehow ... the NPC was killed and not by you (no indication of collision again). Technically you could complain to FD and seek a refund, but they will probably say "working as intended" under this new C&P.

But this is a source of lots of complaints .... accidental fire on a ship, then ship gets killed by something else and the murder is attributed to you.

Have fun whatever you do :) I am quitting and coming back to ED lots of times. For some reason I even find some peace in that it just goes on without me.

Yes, you enjoy life too. I'm not going to argue with people anymore about the game. People like things for different reasons. ED is still on my hard drive. The Hotas seat I cobbled together is still here and the head tracker is close at hand. I'm being positive. If the game didn't turn out the way I wanted it to; so what? Other people seem to really like it, according to some of the posts I read, so I accept that my taste is different. I've lost some weight and can get into a pair of sta prest trousers, so this year I'm going to put loads of chrome on my scooter and go to the Isle Of Wight Rally. THe other dream I had whilst playing Elite on an 8 bit computer.

Cheers y'all. Enjoy yourselves, it's later than you think.

Never saw the Isle Of Wight. Our great-circle tracks brought us in over Scotland, or the North Sea.

Someday, I'll get back there.

On topic: Lightspeed read the log. Y'all should too. That means this could happen to *anyone*, regardless of skill level or situational awareness.

This calls for a re-think of the "punishment" part of crime.
