Friendly factions : do they have my back ?

Hi there, fellow space-dwellers.

First a bit of context : I was minding my business, going along my semi-profitable trading route, when yet another wannabe pirate unveiled his intentions regarding my cargo. After a quick glance at my contacts list, it turned out that the pirate in question was a novice flying an Eagle. I thought "Oh, my trusty Type-7 can definitely take that", so I let his interdiction succeed, pulled out my laughable arsenal and prepared to lay some bovine wrath upon him. However, by the time the fight started, two units from the local authorities, with whom I'm in great terms, showed up and lit the poor guy up, whose last moments will sum up to a lot of regret, some begging and a tiny explosion.
All of which leads me to this question : did the local po-po show up because I'm their buddy and that's what they do, or was I just sort of lucky this one time?
Also on a wider spectrum, what exactly does being in good standing with a faction give?

In advance, many thanks.

The cops showed up because you had report crimes turned on. The systems security rating dictates response time and possibly types of ships that assist.

If you are allied you get the following bonus, I have likely missed some stuff.

- Allied greeting when docking
- All ships belonging to the faction are green on scanner
- All allied ships show full stats on your panel without a need for a scan
- Cheaper fuel
- Reduced chance of stop and check by security and military
- Cheaper Repairs
- Access to higher paid or riskier missions
- Chance of being scanned arriving and departing a port is reduced.

The police show up what ever your standing with a controlling faction if a crime is detected and there is a security level in the system. Systems have Anarchy - no security; low, med, and High security. In systems with security the speed of response is determined by the level, with high being the fastest, given your story I guess you were in a high sec system.
Good rep with a faction will give you better paying missions, and open up some that are restricted to higher rep. You don't get any better or worse support from them because of it.

Oh and a novice NPC Eagle might have been more problematic than you thought in a low sec system, as it could out manoeuvre your T7 all day - depending upon how good you are of course ;)

Being friendly or allied with a faction gives you:

  • More lucrative missions
  • Less chance of being scanned by station patrols
  • Criminal factions will attack you less often if you are on good terms with them
  • You get a friendly message from traffic control

A lot more could be done with reputation, tbh. It's pretty shallow as it is.

Just not possible, even for a fairly new cmdr. Elite NPC's can be quite tricky tho, unless you use seekers against them. Mines/Seekers/Torpedoes are a truckers best friend, you can easily wipe out anything from an Elite Eagle (Deep cut seekers) up to an Elite Corvette (G5 Reverb Cascades)

As I said it depends on the skill of the commander, not all have yours ;)

I just pick my fights very carefully ^^ I guess that counts as skill.
It just tickles my fighting spirit when I see a low-ranked pirate, it's a refreshing change from all the Pythons, FDLs and Condas that usually try to get a taste of my sweet, sweet cargo.
Also I'll look into this Torpedo thing, it does sound appealing.

Anyway thank you all very much for your answers !

Naw not really. A well balanced T7 can hold it's own quite well against anything. The killing however is what the trick is. It's weapons classes make it great for Fighter Class ships. Gunship class might take awhile to kill but punching at it's weight against Frigate Class? Sure it could take the beating but better you leave them alone or have a Combat Escort.

The cops showed up because when someone commits a crime it is reported. This can be turned off in the functions menu. When he interdicted you a timer started. Your reputation with a faction has only 3 effects.

-The payout and eligibility of missions
-The priority of scan targets and combat targets
-The color of ships on your radar

You sure about that?

Many of my allies see me as just another meal ticket.

Pirate factions do not care how allied you are but they prioritize others first. Pirates target ships with expensive cargo. The more expensive your cargo the more likely they will attack you.

-If you are allied and have 1 mil worth of cargo and someone else has 1 mil worth of cargo they will attack you last.
-If you are hated they will attack you first.
-If you are allied and have 1 mil worth of cargo and the guy next to you is hated and has 200k worth of cargo they will attack you first.
