Planetary Circumnavigation - Wilson Edition

Hey Bomba, what time of day / timezone are you usually running in? I don't know if we overlap, so I'm not sure if it makes sense to try to come say hi or not. :)

My guess going by the timestamp on the surface view system map pictures is afternoon UK/Europe time.

Day 20

Mois involvement et non necessaire, vous et returnez dans le pointe et vous commence les journe' et non explodez vous prior de les journe termines et voilas, vous et un membre dans les club.

Pardonez mois un terrible frances, et dans les Chantilly pub consume trois bierre!
I know you don't need to be here, but I want to wait with blowing me up just in case it turns out I messed up and did drive a meter short of completion or something. You never know with me :D

Sushi: The others got it right, going by the ingame clock between 16:00 and 18:00 is where you can find me during the week usually.

Now to today, lucky enough I had daylight and with that good visability
The way ahead is clear, there is what looks like a way up ahead
0201zlszd.jpg

Its a good canyon to drive in, nothing too difficult to go through
0204was1k.jpg

Just some bumpy areas
020549som.jpg

And minor height diffrences here and there
02079bsch.jpg

Getting closer to the point where this canyon crosses with the next the terrain gets a bit more interessting
02010mjsto.jpg

But I have a nice little road to follow here
020127tsl8.jpg

It leads me here, sticking to my heading would mean having to go over this part which turns out to be a bit too high and steep
02013jls7a.jpg

But no worries, while the road I came from makes a sharp turn into the wrong direction keep following it will lead me higher up
0201474sjw.jpg

Once up I just have to jump across that hole
020166nsp1.jpg

And from there with a bit more jumping I can make it to a plateau high up, where I also can see the place where I came from down there
02019rysf0.jpg

At this point I have to start looking for a way out of the Canyon
Down there is the crossroads
02021msq7u.jpg

First gonna go down, then I could stay on low ground following that way there, but being on high ground is always good and climbing up that in front of me looks doable
0202234qnd.jpg

And here I start to wonder, this would be the earliest place to go out of the Canyon. I tough "nah" when I scouted, but I look at it now and it looks very doable
0202433pbq.jpg

So I jump over there, there is too what looks like a road
02027ltrvy.jpg

A bit steep but its going pretty well
02028a3qiu.jpg

Some more driving and jumping and it looks like I passed the most difficult looking parts
0203274pl2.jpg

And indeed, soon after I am out of the Canyon. Silly bomba, why did I think here wouldn't be a good way out? ^^
02033hpru2.jpg

And there I stopped at -10.10/-172.06
02036kxrny.jpg

Now just follow along the canyon aiming for the little hill. Being out of the canyon I should pretty much not have any more difficult parts, its going well!

What ASTOUNDING vistas! I congratulate your photographic skills, as you've shown me how frightening your lovely world truly is.

Finally got back to some wifi that can do justice to these amazing screenshots. Just glorious Bomba, I'm missing this thread already. Who's next?

Day 21

A shame, I'm almost exactly on the wrong side of the planet. :)
There is a easy solution, just start driving until you on the other side :p

And thanks Jazz and Alec for praising my screenies, Wilson can be quite photogenic!

As for today, not a lot happen, just a quick update
And its dark, so not much to see either :D
02110bs4g.jpg

But I do like palying with shadows
02149useo.jpg

From what I can see there are some really nice vistas here, wish it where a bit brighter
0215igsye.jpg

A poor soul
0216o3s12.jpg

And this debris was in a weird place
021113csj5.jpg

And again, looking back I would love see it at daylight
0211757sd7.jpg

And I have a smaler canyon to cross
02122aesl8.jpg

And thats it, stopped at -9.02/179.30
02125zvs20.jpg

Day 22

First of all something got in the way yesterday so I couldn't play, runining my perfect score of playing every day on this trip ^^

But it doesn't matter, lets get to today where I had some company again!

Also some good lightning conditions
0223v0utg.jpg

And there comes Alec joining me!
0226etuzi.jpg

He felt a bit funny today :D

Then we did go drive together, here he comes flying
0229bwudg.jpg

The next waypoint is not far away, its the little mountain in sight
02211jau7y.jpg

Side by side driving
02212mgud5.jpg

And there he comes flying again
02217cwud1.jpg

... He flies a lot :D
02221b8unr.jpg

Then it was time to do some climbing!
It goes well for me, but Alec is running into some trouble. Wilson is having some fun with him
02224uqutg.jpg

Tried to film a bit of him driving up, but being further away his srv is tiny and just a low detail model so the Video is a bit strange ^^

And I'm on the Top!
02227nbuq8.jpg

The opposite direction of where I have to go is a nice looking mountain
02231vduop.jpg

Alec hat to leave again and for me it was time to hop down

I drive a bit more, looking back
022356buxz.jpg

And then ending for today here
02236svuqd.jpg

My position is -11.34/171.22
02239kqrmi.jpg

Gonna have to get back on track after all that detour, next waypoint is gonna be going up the ridge where I started. That will be familiar territory!

Great photos and videos as usual Bomba, love the one of my ship launch piggyback jump, I see what you mean about the ship nearly boosting straight into me!

As for that mountain drive, it was seriously weird. The terrain I was seeing through the windscreen bore absolutely no relation to the terrain I was apparently driving on. I'd see a hill in front of me but drive straight down through it, I'd crash into rocks that weren't there or I'd be on level ground, hear the wheels spinning for grip and then suddenly tumble end over end over end down slopes I couldn't see. Simply had to give up in the end and recall the ship (and even getting to my ship was a real challenge, it landed like 10ft off the ground and then I couldn't get under it).

You know what? I'm not sure the surface of planet Wilson is entirely stable!

Be careful out there.

Day 23

I had such an experience with where the ground is and where textures are not being the same at the Mad Mans Ridge when I scouted weeks ago, but when I did go there on my Tour now all was good. So I guess its not permanent thing. Alltough its weird that it does not effect everybody in the same instance equaly, since for me everything was allright yesterday at the same place.

And now to today!
It was the bright kind of night
0232fxrh4.jpg

The terrain gets a bit more rough, there should be two very small canyons crossing each other causing that
02331tpjq.jpg

Better to see here, while not deep at all the characteristics of a canyon are there
0235kuqpk.jpg

Then Alec came joining me again!
02366erve.jpg

He filmed me for a while driving from his ship, where everything when absoultley perfect and flawless on my part, then he joined me driving a bit
0237s3prn.jpg

There he comes
02311z6p5l.jpg

He had to again, but his DBX sure chose a weird landing spot considering where at an large, flat, open Area
02314fkpzs.jpg

And right ahead was the ridge where I started, time to get on known territory!
Getting the ridge on sight for the first time
023169luzd.jpg

And I made it to Ramp Camp, coming in from the opposite side I we came from almost 2 years ago
02319nbuyr.jpg

That should be around the same place from back then, alltough from the shot I made today thats difficult to see because of where I took the shot
23b19nnula.png

I try to retrack the route we took back then...
0232298ulf.jpg

... and I think I got it right so far, looks like the same place
023b22w5uzg.png

A bit further ahead the "Gates of Hell"
02324ciu9k.jpg

Comparsion still looks good, I always managed to not take a shot at the same place but I'm on the right track
023b24xbuwa.png

Then up to the top via the Ski Slope
02329qouu6.jpg

Best comparsion shot I could find, it should be around the same area
023b29jnun7.png

And then I'm made it up
023312kutv.jpg

Here I got coords, so I definitly should be close to the same place as here
023b315pu49.png

And just a little bit further ahead is my resting place for the night, would always recognise this place. Large flat area with a little bump here makes it easy to do
02333j3uwt.jpg

No doubt :D
038bbqparty207fus2.png

Current coords are -17.63/164.13
02336ukuw9.jpg

Only about 90km to go now, will stop by the place where I made the SOS but I think that should be doable tomorrow.

Nice to fly and drive with you a bit more today Bomba, I have some video of you driving, ahem, absolutely flawlessly, which I'll upload tomorrow once I've, ahem, edited out the flawed boring bits. It's a shame you didn't make it as far as site 12b ... given we were in the same instance you might have found something I left there for you (photos of this tomorrow as well).

One more day should do it I guess ... careful now!

OK, here's one video from yesterday (the DBX PoV footage). Apologies for how dark it is (seemed brighter on my screen yesterday), you might want to give it 10 mins or so until YouTube has the 1080p version available.

SRV PoV footage coming later.

And here's the SRV PoV video. Nothing spectacular (I seem to have completely failed to capture some of the better segments when I was really on your tail) but I like the words of my music choice.

Until I was able to see what your gift was, I was becoming concerned it was going to be the burned-out hulk of your ship, crashed and waiting for Bomba on the surface of his planet. :)

thats a nice SOS Alec :D
But I'm pretty sure there is no way that would have been still there if I had gotten there yesterday. Theres a limit to how long those tyre tracks stay visible or how many tyre tracks one srv can make.

And watching that video where you are in the DBX made me think it would have been funny if you hit me from behind while I'm in the Air. I wonder how much speed that could give me :D

I'm genuinely really curious about this actually (must try to grab someone from Frontier at Lavecon and ask about it). I'm not convinced there is a time limit on track marks, I always assumed they were permanent for the instance (you must have had the thing where you drive back to somewhere you were at some time ago and re-discover your own track marks?).

I started a thread about this sort of thing ages ago which didn't gain any traction ..

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/389660-When-is-an-instance-not-an-instance

So, as another example for that thread ... say I land and draw some tracks. If you then log in and message me your co-ordinates and I fly to your location (without jumping in or out of supercruise and without ever experiencing any kind of instance joining delay like you might get when dropping out at a popular station) ... if you followed me back to where I drew the tracks would you see them? If I then logged off would they disappear or would your continue to keep my instance (and my tracks) in existence? If we each drew track marks before meeting and then we met up and I came to see yours and you came to see my mine, would they both be there? Have the instances somehow merged?

Like I say, geuinely curious about how all this works.

Alec, are you still on Planet Wilson?
See if Bomba's tracks are still here when you get to the finish?

I'm sitting by the wreck of his SRV .......
