I had an idea, so I put it to the test, and it WORKED. I was able to jump over 7000LY and keep my ship (in other words, not the free Sidewinder trick). The utility of this "wormhole" is somewhat limited, but still, it's kinda amazing all the same. I don't want to spoil the mystery, so here's a screenshot that should let the clever folk among you figure out what I did:
-- EDIT --
Somebody guessed what I did, so here are the details. I've been operating around the Heart Nebula for awhile, and I noticed that one CMDR was listed as WANTED at the asteroid base there. That's what started me thinking about C&P and what would happen if a CMDR was killed with a bounty thousands of light years from home. So, I tried it - I cashed in any outstanding exploration data, then I got myself a small bounty, let the station's security forces destroy me, and poof, I'm transported to a detention center in the California nebula. I was actually hoping to be transported all the way back to the Bubble, but ~7 KLYs in a second isn't bad! This is 'new' because I was able to cash in my exploration data and keep my ship (after paying rebuy).
So now I have a couple of questions. First, what happens to a CMDR with a bounty who dies of 'natural causes', like slamming into a planet? Do you have to be killed by security / bounty hunter to end up in a detention center?
Second, are there detention centers in Colonia? If so, can someone travel just over half way to Colonia with a small bounty and then slam their ship into a planet to create a "wormhole" to take them the rest of the way?
I don't mean to be a game-ruining exploiter, I just find this 'game mechanic' a very interesting side-effect of C&P.
