Sounds like you could learn from a bit of tutorials. Everything you mentioned here can be limited or stopped entirely with a little bit of knowledge of how Elite works. The grind(as in repeating processes or as in it being to hard to do) is all combatted with a little bit of learning of how to do stuff. I am truely sorry that you had such a horrible time and if it was as much of a problem to play Elite then maybe Elite isn’t the game for you. I have taught tons of people how to progress in Elite easily but some still just want to complain and not learn how easily it can be done. I think most people just try to play the game by themselves and forget that you can’t learn this game alone. That would be like expecting a baby to raise itself in the real world without any adults helping them.
Not such a helpful comment IMO. "You're dumb. Get help. Maybe you're too dumb to play and you should quit."
Elite has a steep learning curve. Count the number of keybindings that are required - it's rough. The surface mission descriptions do not articulate how crossing a trespass boundary can effect your notoriety / wanted status and what the consequences for that are. Flying in SC in a straight line for 5 minutes to get to an in system destination is silly and not "game play". Toodling around waiting for a USS to pop and hold your desired destination is not "game play" (no skill is required, no challenge is offered, its just an RNG timer). I hope the devs listen to this guy, and get out of their box. Elite can be more than niche.
If FD wants to increase the player base they will have to change some game design paradigms
Its a 4 year old title...there's literally NOTHING they could do now that will significanty increase the player base...

Isn't that what they call "busywork". Seeing it listed like that, just makes it more ridiculous in my mind and does nothing to encourage me to do any. This game is a grind, there's no two ways about it. And i'll give you an example of grind that i face to engineer one ship.
So i'm building a combat corevette and i want to engineer it head to toe. Now without going into detail about what i'm modifying, here is the total list of materials i need to hunt down to do it.
NOTE: Based on my previous engineering experience i've found that grinding for 5 rolls per grade is the average amount i need to max it out.

Agree with you OP. I've got about 2000+hrs myself and not one of them has ever felt like I was having to grind. If you know what you're doing and are half way competent, it's not a grind at allI just started a new account on PC as I have been an Xbox Elite Player for years now to the tune of about 6800 hours played(On XBox alone). I felt like the grind was going to be so hard because I hear so many people complain about it so often that I started to believe it was true. Then I look at my Inara journal updates(https://inara.cz/cmdr/109447/) and realize its not at all that hard and I feel more and more people just want stuff that they are unable or unwilling to work for. This is still less then 8 days played and Im 2 Imperial ranks away from the Cutter. From a Sidey to a A class Python in less then 8 days in game playing time.

Grind?
How about unplayable...that's my rating of this RNG disaster. There are SO MANY hazards that can 'randomly' happen that it can be hell to even get past 1 million credits. In 8 hours I went from 1,300,000 +/- to 3000 credits TRYING to salvage a black box. "Threat hazard 0" the indicator says when the mission objective is found, but drop in and open a cargo scoop, and you're swarmed with FOUR eagle class fighters that shred you in seconds. ...49k to get my ship back, another 60k to switch things around to be more deadly...FSD DIRECTLY into the blue star that the nav point sits on top of. Go for repairs, try again, dead quicker this time. 49K to start again, buy a fighter and outfit it to deal with the nuisance, fit it up with the top shelf gear available in the market - 780k, oh hey...the mission galaxy map WON'T lock in the destination...must be done manually...FSD malfunction and Im back at the repair center...lock the nav point MANUALLY again, because you know..grind...just like the 'you didn't click the square button, so even though I PROGRAMMED THE ROUTE FOR YOU, I can't make the jump without going an 'economical route' so, back to the dash board, clickity, re-align with the OTHER planet that wasn't AUTO PROGRAMMED IN when you chose the route...space jump, into the blue star again, back to the repair center, off to the target destination that will NO LONGER LOCK IN THE COMPASS, finally you are on your way to the destination, but first, lets drop in on this signal source and shoot at some floating garbage to get a feel for the new weapons set up and timing...but no, as soon as the signal beacon is selected, I'm INSTANTLY at top speed (in thrust control on the right, not on the proximity indicator on the left), and I'm blown completely past the nav point...circle back and try to drop in...same thing, different direction. So, screw it, drop the missions, the game said no. Try to go back to get my other ship...all of my jump points are locked into the missions I just dropped and I HAVE to go there now (remember a few minutes ago when I COULDN'T?) grind...there are enough bugs, breaks, and INCREDIBLY TERRIBLE RNG to make this wonderfully crafted visually hypnotic (for a reason?) graphical experience a COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. I have played Elite on the commodore Amiga (near thirty years ago in complete wireframe), and on Linux boxes as Oolite - the open source variant, and while both of them are extremely limited graphically, and come with many of the same sorts of bugs, and anomalies one would expect to randomly encounter, THIS little gem takes the cake, leaving me staring at passing stars and solar signals, wondering which one will kill me next without warning. RNG may be treating you well, and you may think I don't know what I'm doing, but I've clocked WELL over 1000hrs on other variants of this game, with MUCH better results. I'm near 100 hours now, and have made it to near a million credits three times, only to see it all WIPED OUT by mission requirements, or random crap that outright steals it all from me for repeated insurance payments, repairs, and upgrades I SHOULDN'T NEED if the missions are matched to the rank, and I've purchased the TOP OF THE LINE equipment and balanced power effectively in the ship's subsystems so it all functions optimally. No no...I have to die again from some random crap, or lock fail on the dashboard that burns out the mission deadline, or some other COMPLETELY unwarranted B.S. plugged into the game by game developers who don't even bother to update tutorials so that they function properly. WHY do I have to be logged on to their servers to play the game? There is no offline mode, why? Perhaps you have escaped the RNG/screw you implant in your game installation, but I'm here to tell you, on my end, it's like there's some dev hiding behind my console screwing with my progress EVERY TIME I log in to start SOLO PLAY. I mean, I could see if there was a pack of malicious people that wanted me to fail in open play, but ALL of what I have described has happened in solo play. I have spent the last 8 hours getting killed, wrecked, burned up, or bought out. I came to the web to find out if there's a solution, the devs are content to send me off to the forums, so...grind...it's all one fabulously graphical GRIND as near as I can tell. I do enjoy playing the game...but I absolutely DETEST the way the game plays me. Build up as much as I can...watch it all go away on some CRAP mission DESIGNED to take it all away. From now on, I'm abandoning all such, without remorse, fines accepted. - Just don't expect to get another red cent of real money on ANYTHING this particular bunch has to sell. I've dropped near a hundred dollars into add ons for other games. I'm DONE spending money on this game. Fix the bugs, get rid of the auto-kill scenarios, for GOD sake make an off line mode, and clean up the waste of time 'automated to fail' issues with navigation. That would be a good start...how long has this version been out now? yeah...grind.
Just a heads-up to avoid frustration. 5 rolls on average are definitely not enough to completely max out a G5 mod. It's more like 7-9 rolls. On the other hand, lower grades won't take nearly as many rolls.
Never once seen an actual example of these supposed people.I think you're missing that there are people that for some strange reason cannot accept that ED has any/many issues and fervently defend the game against any and all criticisms.
Since a lot of players complain about grind in the game because the game is really grindy you get posts pretending there is no grind, blaming the players for grinding (even though there isn't any grind apparently) etc.... anything but the game is somehow not perfect just the way it is.
lack of money to be made, enough said

$250 million in 7 days playing time with ranks starting at 0 in all ranks. I’m showing you the proof with my logs on my inara. Everything is clear for you I see if you want to look. I feel I could do his in any system hybhe ways. The money will on double and triple as I go up in ranks so I see no issue with money. You gotta put time into get money back, CMDR.
