New Mac platform will be ARM based. So I wouldn't expect Bootcamp to even come close to working.

Say goodbye to Mac as desktop. It goes away.

Sorry, that's pure rubbish. We'll not see an Apple desktop using ARM for years, ARM just doesn't have the bus power to be a viable desktop yet.

My MBP will still be useful for connecting to my EDServer :D

I have been a Mac user since I bought my awesome cheese grater Mac Pro in 2006 (I miss that machine). Right now, I have an iMac in my home office and for certain tasks it is a great machine. For software development and productivity it is still way ahead of Windows for me. However, I am super annoyed at Apple because I have to maintain a separate PC tower just for games. Happily I play Elite on the PC. While I disagree what the Mac is dead I agree that overall desktop computing is in decline.

As for this decision I totally blame Apple. They refuse to update OpenGL on macOS and won't support Vulkan. It also doesn't help that the GPU's in the iMacs are super low-end for the money. The only machine Apple makes with a decent GPU is crazy expensive and totally non-upgradable. I can see why most gamers have a distaste for the Mac.

Why do you need a tower? I play Elite in VR on my Laptop..

A good solution may be, to give Mac users a free Horizons pass for PC as sort of damage reduction, so they can spent the Horizons money on a windows copy for bootcamp.
At least, that would be a nice gesture, when refund is not happening and it would mean no costs for Frontier - so in some cases a win - win, while it still is a sad and bad thing for others.

I started playing on a mac, but made the jump to a gaming PC, when Horizons was announced. Nowadays i enjoy Elite in VR, so i have made my goodbye from gaming on Mac a long time ago. Still, i feel sad, for everyone who stayed by the flag-pole to the bitter end.

I think that would be a wonderful gesture on FD's part. Although it does assume said Mac users were willing to go bootcamp.

It is with great sadness that we must announce the upcoming end of Elite Dangerous on Mac.

Firstly, we want to reassure you that this decision did not come lightly and is something that we have been investigating for some time. As many of you will know, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to bring Elite Dangerous Horizons to Mac since launch due to technical barriers.

My only PC is a Mac, and this is one of the reasons I own a Playstation, because I've personally found the Mac to be a poor platform for gaming. I think you made the right decision, even though I do feel bad for Mac players because the Mac hardware is pretty great (assuming they have high-end graphics). Hopefully these players can pick up a cheap copy of Windows and use bootcamp for ED. I suspect they've seen the writing on the wall for awhile.

Have you tried making a Hackintosh? I have one PC, with a Mac OS installation on one SSD which I used for work and a Windows SSD I use for gaming. It was a bit of a faff getting it working but after a few hours of pulling my hair out I have a stable machine which I've been using for about three years now and gradually upgrading as I go.

Naw, the gaming support for macOS is not good enough to make this work for me. The iMac exists as a thing to help me get stuff done and the gaming PC is for playing games. I pretty much just look at my PC as a souped up gaming console. My iMac is pretty recent (27” 2015 5k) so I will be keeping it for a number of years yet.

You can edit movie on Windows on hardware which costs much less than Mac tower. I produce good music on my Linux home computer. Majority of Adobe Creative Suite subs are Windows.

Seriously, Mac Desktop is dead. This Tim message is basically trying to position it as a win. They know it isn't. But they also know that most of pros will move to Windows overnight because there's nothing unique about Mac anymore.

World really doesn't need Mac anymore.

I'm not a Mac fan by any means - I'll use it if I have to; I'm more comfortable with PC - but I work in both education and the creative industries and from what I've seen, the penetration of Mac desktop into those sectors is just nuts. I'm always amazed by the number and fanaticism of the Mac users I know, and in many cases, their wariness, derision and even outright fear of using Windows. Tell them they have to use Photoshop or Premiere on a PC, and a lot of them look at you with panic like you just asked them to land a 747. Keystrokes aside, most of the software they use works exactly the same on both platforms, but you cannot make them see that.

I wouldn't underestimate the stubbornness of users who are entrenched in a particular system, especially users who are not first-and-foremost computer tech enthusiasts (artists, teachers, photographers, editors, etc.), who have been intensely marketed to by one company for decades, "don't have time to learn a new system", and are the ones making demands to IT departments about what hardware to buy.

They might move eventually, but it won't be overnight, and I think a lot of them will be way more forgiving than you might expect.

PC users were once told that should the game ever end, they would do something so you can still play the game, but the universe won't update any more.

Surely Mac users are entitled to get this too, are there plans to put it into action so mac players can still play the game in some way?
(because if not, then I think we can take it that PC users won't get it either, the day the development ends for good)

There is a reason why Apple includes this with every installation of OSX...

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/boot-camp

At worst it's a minor inconvenience for most, Apple already provides the tools to allow their customers to run Windows & all it's programs.

A Windows 10 license can be bought off Amazon for the price of a couple of pints down the pub & remains perfectly functional even if you don't pay for a key.

Players that have bought ED for Mac already have a PC license (& vise versa) so no extra cost there. In fact there is little to no extra cost to the player other than their time to set up boot-camp & install Windows + EDH. The chances are most of them will already be using boot-camp for one thing or another so will probably already have the system set up.

The only people that might be locked out are those that were on systems that were only just able to run the game in the first place. Or, (which is more likely) those that simply don't want to use the tools provided to them (but that is all on them).

That said, it would be a nice gesture of goodwill if FD offered those that might be affected by the change access to Horizons, either via bootcamp or their console of choice.

Apple desktops and laptops are still very popular and will not be dying or disappearing anytime soon. They are the 4th biggest desktop/laptop supplier above Asus and Acer. Losing that will be a massive revenue loss.

It is dwarfed by colossal revenue by mobile for Apple.

They will have to. Many have already seen signs. Yes, there are many people who don't want to change and they will most likely will try to keep their Mac laptops going as long as possible. But without vendor to fall back to, they will be forced to make decision.

The desktop market is shrinking for all manufacturers, not just Apple. Many Apple fans moved to laptops long ago and many are now finding that iPads and even smartphones have enough power to do the day to day work. Much of PC gaming has moved to laptops and consoles are starting to get closer in power to PCs built for gaming.

Apple knew that gaming was not a good business idea for them back when Bungie went to MS. Apple is usually ahead of the curve when it comes to seeing where the market is headed. It was nice of FDev to support ED on Macs as long as they did but it wasn't a smart financial move and I think the financials of supporting Macs long term was a bigger factor than any technical limitations.
