Abandonware

Yet another OP with very little background in the game spitting out predictions.

If they really knew what was going on they would realize that Frontier has been very smart with this labor of love game. If they were to invest a tun of money on this game they would loose money, so they are investing the manpower they can afford to invest on the game while doing the other projects which pay the bills.

Be glad that this project is not the only project the company has and that you're not spending hundreds on every ship for a alpha version of the game!

Frontier, may your other projects have great success so that you continue to have the manpower to work on this labor of love!

So, assumption, incorrect interpretation, wishful thinking, uninformed baseless comment, player blaming, and back to wishful thinking. Outstanding contribution, thanks.

As long as they can afford one guy to crank out paint skins this thing will last to 2050. Isn't GW1 still up - it's F2P.

there are painfully few examples of abandoned games ever being released to the public or opened up in a way that allows the public to implement anything to allow them to continue playing it when it's a game that requires a server to play.

Though, there are also examples of game servers staying online well into 15 years - supported by just a handful of players. However, those are subscription based games that get monthly income. Elite is not one of those kinds of games.

I estimate that the game will be playable so long as Fdev doesn't go bankrupt. It'll just be left to rot after some amount of time (some argue it already has), but the servers will remain on.

What if everyone could just stop making baseless assumptions and "predictions" and enjoy the game as long as it lasts?

Why trying to make fake and bad publicity for the potential new players reading thru this forum?

If I was a new player who wanted to get started and I read thru the whole whining and blaming and stupid crying about how the game should be or how the game is about to die in the next few months, I wouldn't want to join...

And if no new people join, well, nobody will continue funding the ongoing development...
If you want the game to live on, stop complaining and assuming you know how, when and why the game will die.

That is, if it's not your initial goal to spread out fake news and drive potential players away...

Seriously... It's getting really annoying after a bit...

HDD... what's it like time-traveller, back there in the 20th century?

The 20th century? Well, I'll tell you all about it!

1. There was no online or computers, we did real things and led real lives
2. We interacted with each other face to face, we had actual relationships
3. We were polite to each other and would never think of hurling insults at anyone, even strangers
4. We respected others, especially our elders
5. We worked, yes, I mean real jobs - even when we were kids
6. When we turned 18, we moved out and supported ourselves for the rest of our lives
7. Everybody was skinny (yes everyone) because we actually moved around, went outside, and did real things
8. We appreciated what we had, because we had to earn the money to pay for things
9. Kids worked at home, we did chores, like dishes, scrubbing toilets, yard work, etc. to earn our keep in the house
10. And the most important of all...kids got spanked - with belts! We quickly learned that if we were rude, we would walk funny for the rest of the day.

Oh well... that all sounds like my childhood :D

Hey at least the game is a bit more popular than Farming Simulator. They'll have to step up their game and produce more banana skins if they want to beat wallpaper engine though.

I really don't think the servers are as beefy as everyone thinks. They just dole out a matrix of numbers that says "put X here", and store save info. All the models and textures are local. As long as enough people are still playing, I'm sure somebody would pick up the rights to continue the game. Whether it'll still be worth playing is another question (hopefully so).

Obvious troll is obvious. Plonk.

By the way, Community team: Can the forum software be set up to not show threads started by somebody on my ignore list at all, no matter how many replies they got? There's no value in my seeing them because even if other participant are somewhat saner the context is missing - and if it was worth plonking them in the first place it's NOT worth undoing it just on the off chance that they finally grew an additional brain cell and can now manage a synapse.

Would have been totally ok for me, but marketing told us a different story.

Braben has always said that it will be handed over to the community. I don't think that's realistic as the servers as far as I know are many, and the BGS is TB of data. No one is hosting this anytime soon. When Elite has the servers switched off, that's it. However, FD are doing well, so that will only happen when there are so few players as to make it an easy choice. But it will be sad that we can't play it forever. Modern gaming, really. Built on sand.

Sorry to come in so late, traffic and all that....

So, about this server thingy. For those of us individuals who hear about them but have never actually worked with one, not to mention SEEN one of them, how exactly would that work?

Here's my current PC build:
http://eldorf.tripod.com/newpc/

Now, to play Elite "after the universe ends" would I need a second PC set up as a server so I can connect to a PC that acts as a server? Or would the entire game fit in my PC case (using a second SSD)? Would this be solo or MMO?

Or would I have to search out some loving soul who's running a server and then connect to it? Would there be more than one such person?
More important: Who would I complain to about those constant server disconnects? :S

I don't see why this should be locked, this is a legit question. But AFAIK, the game is unplayable without the Servers of Frontier, so whenever the Support for the game Ends (see: ten year plan :p) you will have to find another game like this. Which Frontier will of course have finished developping by then :D

i remember people saying that about sim city

Once this game has completed its orbital decay around the drain and makes the inevitable full transition to abandonware, will we be able to play it as a standalone game, or will the game disk just become part of a new game called Coffee Coaster?

Thx.

Abandonware is not what you think it is. It means no company enforces copyright for it. In that terms ED will never be abandonware.

I guess you are trolling, but hey, terminology is important.

Elite Dangerous is based on the original title, Elite. The source code for Elite is freely available.

If someone had the means, money and want, they could write their own version and owe FD nothing.

After having a read of some of the comments in here I'd say this thread has pretty much said all it needs to say.

Thanks all.
