[O.A. VIDEO] Does Elite Dangerous Have a Content Problem?

I thought so too during the beta, I really enjoyed the new planets and all. But since beta closed, I havent bothered visiting any new planet. They unfortunately already feel all the same to me. I had found one in the beta that looked like Highlands hills, pretty cool. Never found one like that since. And yeah, since the topology is still the same, meh.

Well, if you haven't landed on any since beta, then you won't know will you. I have seen some incredible sights.

The differences are pretty superficial though. Some planets throw up some nice canyons, but that's about all. There are only a few different sized rocks, all the same, on every planet - there's no point 'exploring' in the hope of finding something unusual or interesting, because it doesn't exist. It's why most screenshots are of space, rather than on planet. And the ones that are taken from the SRV are usually capturing something astronomical, rather than geographical.

Then you would be wrong then. I have seen some amazing scenery in my exploration of the galaxy.

Well, that sounds good - if you've got any screenies and co-ordinates I'd love to have a look. I'm really at a loose end at the moment.

Nah, they are all out 1000's of light years away. I don't keep a record of everything. But I will try to dig out some screenshots if I can.

Cheers! I'm on the verge of quitting the bubble for bit, having finally got round to trying neutron star jumping, so any encouragement is welcome.

As my humble opinion regarding contents and elite.

I would say that I am quite happy with the updates of the planetary color and the engineer. I really enough to go out with my SRV. But, the planetary mining gameplay is a little boring and random I must admit (at least for me).

In term of contents, I think the mission board toke a step backward. (Especially because of the introduction of wing mission and rework of Crime & punish). Wing transport missions have overtaken my board since weeks.

Before 3.0, I would gladly take crime mission or transport or skimmers assault. Right now, those missions are either not paying enough for the risk or too much for the laziness. The only missions I run for the moment are strictly assassination missions. (solo or wing). The mission board is quite generous with those kind of missions.

The others...no. This is I think a step backward because the new C&P didn't imply an adjustment of the mission board...and let's be honest, C&P has quite a few flaws right now. I have a dedicate comment for the creator of the massacre mission...Are you insane ? ... really. Too much pirates to kill or too low payout. You always face on of those two instances. (sorry but I had to take it out).
But anyway, when things will get fix, maybe we will enjoy more missions variety has currently.

As for pure content, the chieftain was quite good.

The guardian modules are quite good if you take apart the "grind" that it requires you to do. (honestly ... Frontier could do something easy and fast here but anyway, not my job).
I will not talk about the new bugs and miss on some guardian modules...lack of testing, I think this is the main reason of those failure. Though, I can understand that we can't test everything on beta phasing (especially when the content is "hidden" for a later release). I have got this also. It's normal to not spoil the lore or the storyboard but then, you should test internally and not be lazy.

There are still more gameplay like interaction with megaship but honestly...not my cup of tea. So that, I can't comment anything on this.

Multicrew and squadron is probably good if you still have friends in the game.

Of course I always buy spaceship games based on the quality of their caves, its the first thing I think of. For FPS's I go purely by the pot plants in office based levels.

I think it would be pretty cool to explore caves with our SRV, have you been inside alien "base" yet? Gives idea how neat it would be.

I do like a good pot plant in my FPS. If there a no pot plants I generally rage quit.

Agreed. Caves would be nice to have and maybe have them as something that has a higher chance of rare materials in them.

While I agree that SOME "Non-developers can draw perfectly valid conclusions about the development of the game", in general, non-developers don't understand the basics of software development and fall into various "obvious" but incorrect assumptions, such as "adding more programmers will speed development", which has been disproved numerous times.*

As a senior software engineer, working on a large (1 million lines+) codebase and as someone who was once a game developer, rlsg clearly knows about "real-world software development". That jives with my experiences as well.

My take is that there were significant shortcuts taken during the initial development of ED, which is not surprising. FD is finding it difficult to make changes to that crufty code, which is also not surprising, nor are the resulting delays and bugs. What they really seem to need is more automated testing and unit-tests, so that they can refactor their code into a high-quality codebase. I sincerely hope they are doing that, but to an outside observer, that results in ZERO apparent progress, since no new features will be added by this process. After a while, one might notice fewer bugs and somewhat faster progress, but by "a while", I mean MANY months or even years, for a project as large as ED.

All of this speculation is completely unnecessary. If you want to know why it takes so long to do anything at FD, just go to glassdoor and read the reviews.

Does ED even have caves yet?
I believe it does - after a fashion. Some of the Thargoid structures may qualify.

If you are talking about natural caves, I don't think there are any but I could be wrong.

Either way, I do not believe it is a big deal if there are not any caves.

There are no caves or overhangs in PG planet surface right now, pretty sure due to tech limitation. No idea of FD ever talked about possibility of structures like that, would be pretty cool. As said alien structures looks amazing but those were hand crafted.

I am pretty sure that some of the Thargoid structures had at least concave parts if not entry ways which could be accessed if you carried unknown artefacts (aka Thargoid sensors) in the SRV. Never tried it myself, but I have seen at least one of those structures.

The Guardian ruins also have arches which you can both drive under and over in an SRV too.

[EDIT]BTW if Planet Coaster is any indication (given it allegedly uses the same engine), the tech is perfectly capable of supporting caves and tunnels.[/EDIT]

Haha... yes! In shopping malls too. Still remember my MW days with bullets suddenly flying out of indoor plants. :)
