Modes My experiment n OPEN

So with all the talk about open/greifers/gankers. I decided to find out for myself what it is really like. I have played exclusively in open for the last seven days, and while your milage may vary, this is my experience. I have been attacked by other commanders a total of zero times. I went about my business as normal, visited Jameson, engineer sites, Merope, Maia...etc. I met a bunch of commanders, and chatted with many of them. I was asked if I wanted to fight on a number of times, but I was never attacked on a non- consensual basis. Granted I did not do this weeks CG, but I didn't have that on my agenda this week. Bottom line is that for me at least, open wan not really any different than PG where I usually play. I'll stick in open and report back in another week incase anyone cares, but at this point, in my experience, the problem seems exaggerated.

90% of people's "Open" problems can be solved by keeping their head on a swivel and practicing their escape procedures.

I think you're going to find, OP, that Open isn't as scary as people make it out to be.

Scary? I think stupid is more the word.
And yes, my mileage does vary.
Despite (yet another) thread of “Open is like a rainbow and unicorn fantasy land” you can keep it.
3 modes. Everyone can play where and how they want. Except PP maybe...

About 3.5 years in open and been attacked approximately 10-15 times by cmdrs that whole time.
I spend most of my time doing bgs for my faction, its mostly quite around here but have an engineer system so still see cmdrs every now and then.
Really struggling to remember the last time i was attacked, i know i got away always do! :D

I find this sudden embrace and love of PP by the PvP community to be hilarious.

I always liked Powerplay but never got into it for very long because i didn't enjoy my hard work being undone by an invisible hand of some dude hiding in solo safe from all competition, and my sudden swell of excitment for it is caused by the equally sudden proposal that would make this one deal breaker practically impossible.
Who would have thought things work that way :S

What ship/loadout, what combat rank, what time-zone?

I find I get a lot more attention during US peak hours (sorry folks), I also find I had less unwanted attention at Dangerous/Deadly and got more attention early ranks and also more now I'm at Elite combat rank. Finally I know in certain ships I will just be left well alone like my corvette fully combat fitted and my FDL. Compare those to other ships and I know everyone and their dog will be piling on to get a bite of my Cutter/T9/T10!

CG is always the worst followed by Jameson then engineers in that order. Whilst it's totally possible to go weeks without being attacked it's also possible to have 8 different cmdrs attack within the space of an hour or so.

I 100% agree that mileage may vary and yes the problem is exaggerated. My personal take on the situation is I play open when I want a challenge and Solo/Pg when I've had a real crappy day at work and just want to zone out in a different world for an hour or so. My issue is by forcing me either soft-sell or hard-sell into a choice I don't want to make it means I'll be playing a different game instead of Elite when my mood/IRL situation is one way or the other. I'd rather be able to play Elite different ways to suit my IRL situation.

That being said I fully agree that lots of people on both sides are arguing like children and I commend you for stepping above it and testing yourself and putting an unbiased review/experiment in. You are a rarity, +1 :)

This again, what too many feedback posts.

Let's get the dead horse out again.

.....

Played open for a month, going in and out of Jameson in a bare bones Beluga.
Even advertised I was doing it.

Only ever got pulled by NPCs, despite seeing human CMDRs.

One of the problems some folks have in open is accepting random friend requests, as that system is abused by "griefers" to find / track victims.
So as long as you play smart, Open is just as safe as Solo. Ignore random invites, don't tell people your flight plans and watch your scanner, simple.

Heck I managed to save up and buy my Anaconda and Corvette doing passenger missions that month just using Open mode.

My experience as well! People in there are extremely chatty for some reason "o7 Commander!" Feels weird being called a Commander though haha.

Now I just need some more Credits so I dare fly my bigger ships as well. Been flying my FAS which is only about 5mil.

Neither my post, nor the OP's, made any particular mention of the other modes of play, or their validity. Indeed, I have in the past (as recent as my next to latest post prior to this) championed the mentality that people should play in whatever mode suits them, whenever it suits them. Your vitriolic, pre-emptive assault is a good example, I think, of the "rational" PvE advocate who froths at the mouth with anti-open zeal, and manages to strike the first blow almost without fail.

Honestly, the way that you speak about it (have spoken about it for quite some time) makes me doubt the blasé attitude that you are trying to project. You read like someone for whom the mention of Open play is a negative emotional trigger, and who attempts to hide it behind a "meh" holier-than-thou attitude. But it is a thin facade, and if it doesn't hide a core mentality of "scardy-ness", it at least obfuscates and distorts the core enough to make it seem as such.

Wow. Try some decaf next time if you think my post was a “assault” snowflake.

Don't get me wrong, I am in no way worked up or agitated. I'm simply making an assessment of your personality based on your post history.
