Horizons Next ship

I really love the aesthetics of the imperial ships and it sucks that to do very long range exploration I'm gimping myself if I don't use an asp or anaconda. I'd really love an imperial explorer ship

Not much chance of that, Sandro Sammarco said on a live stream there will be no new exploration ships locked behind ranks in the Beyond update.

I quickly knocked up a grade-5-engineered-FSD-equipped-for-exploration Imperial Clipper on coriolis.io ..... not too shabby with a jump range of about 35 lyr. That's what I'm getting with my T-10 and I am out past Colonia.

Coriolis build here
It could be improved further (I think the 6E thrusters could do with swapping out with something a little more sprightly, and 6D would save more weight), but you get the idea.

You don't need massive jump ranges any more, because you can adopt neutron star jumping to get to your destination fast. Then make deliberately short jumps at your destination in order to discover exciting new finds and maximize your credits and pleasure.

My current iClipper mainly for missions and material gathering, but has a jump range of 38.7ly unladen and that includes.
Boost speed 598m/s
144t cargo space

x2 3C multi cannons
x2 2D beam lasers

shutdown field
Xeno scanner
heatsync
Long range wake scanner

144t worth of cargo racks
2G vehicle hanger
3A collector limpets
6A fuel scoop
3D shields for little bumps and landings
ADS+DSS

The only downside is the tiny fuel tank, but sometimes I give up 16t cargo space for 16t fuel tank which can give me up to 6 jumps on a full tank.

The big downside is what do when the FSD booster works. Can't just replace C4 slot with a FSD booster because the fuel tank is to small.

Lightspeed's design was a bit less than optimal, so I tweaked it. This gets 38.83 LY when not hauling anything. If you were to engineer it for light weight components, you could easily push that up over 40LY.

Nice build +1 :)

For long distance exploration, you could replace the 4A AFMU with a limpet repair controller and add limpets to the cargo, which doesn't seem to harm the jump range much.

I've been doing a lot of research and I think the Imp Courier is better than the clipper for exploration of you don't plan on landing anywhere.

I still wish we had an imperial ship that could directly compete with the DBX, AspX and Conda

Any ship in the game can be used for deep space exploring. Even Sidewinders have done it. Google them on YouTube. If max jump range is your priority then you are stuck with the Asp and Anaconda. There are so many other options. Maybe consider flying in style with an Empire ship. Less jump range but more cartographics to turn in for a much bigger payday.
