Modes Why do you want me in Open?

... What exactly are you missing out on by not having me in your instance?

Without reading the the other posts in this thread, just my personal reason why I want you (and as many other players as possible) in open:

1) I like seeing hollow "blibs" on my radar. It is nice to know that there are other real people involved in this game, possibly enjoying it. (Gives me good vibes, you know? :) )
2) You are not interested in (PvP-)combat? Great! Neither am I (at least the PvP part; I like fighting NPCs)! Having another peaceful player in 'open' helps to "dilute" the gankers.
3) I still like the possible risk of being attacked by players. It adds excitement to the game. Hence I am not interested in private groupes like Mobius.
4) The more real players are in the game, the more often I can feel this exciting uncertainty: Is this commander friendly? Or am I in danger? Being relieved seeing your 'clean' status gives me positive feelings again (see 1).

So, yes, I would LOVE to see you in 'open'!
While I am afraid you are "my content" (even if I don't intend to kill you), I think this is meant in the most positive way possible. After all, I am your content, too - and I don't mind it in the least! :)

I want u in Open simply to have another CMDR to perhaps see during my travels.... plus, from dev perspective, frees FD from maintaining 3 aspects to the game for a sandbox that is soooo vastly large.

I do not want to see you in Open and I do not want to see you in Mobius. Because you will hog the only medium landing pad and go afk. You will fly in the middle of the mail slot and ram my ship and not even say sorry. You will for most of the time ignore any hails and not chat. You will chat boring stuff in a stupid little chat window while I want to get on with my missions.

I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOU. Or anyone else. Let's play in solo, like we did with all the other Elite versions before.

BUT: if you join my PP faction or player faction and we have chatted before and we agree to meet at a certain station at a certain time, then I will be happy to see you!
Random encounters in online games are just as bad as random encounters on the main street. I won't trust you until you were introduced by a mutual friend and we have common interests. I will avoid you. Let's play in solo.

By it's current mechanics, yes.

That's why the proposals are needed.

Is there something in the proposals that doesn't mean it will lead to stagnation? It might shift the balance of power, but once things settle down, i don't see how it won't stagnate. It still takes more effort to expand/prep/fortify systems the further they are from home right?

Let's say there were just 2 powers, and one side had double the number of supporters than the other. With a bit of time, eventually the bigger power would expand to the point where they are working at maximum to maintain their existing borders with nothing left over for further expansion. They can't make any sort of push to totally destroy the other power, nor can they go too far in any other direction, eventually they run into a limit of how much they can expand in any direction.

That is what i'm talking about, the mechanics themselves drive things to stagnation. And if a power suffers a loss in players, then they have to drop back or work harder to maintain what they have.

I don't think any power can count on increasing number of players or ask for more participation from members. I don't know how many people will be willing to do nothing but PP, can't imagine too many.

Has FD given any indiciation they are looking into this issue? Are there some changes planned to address this?

Doesn't look like Microsoft or Sony will allow cross platform play though :p

Group stuff doesn't have much appeal - been there and done that in other games.
PP has no appeal full stop - if I wanted to play strategy, I'd get out the board games.
I might do BGS stuff more if there was more of an impact on how it makes systems feel.
Mechanics that shut things down are poorly thought through, so I'm not a fan of UA Bombing, forcing Lockdowns, or that PP impact on Black Markets.

I do take part in the odd CG, usually trade but I'll drop into the accompanying BH CG if the res. site is convenient.
I have done burning and repair station stuff - I got a T9 specifically to help with the early IDA efforts.
I did chase the mysteries with Canonn for quite a long time until I realized it's 99% meta-gaming and there's very little progress to be made actually in game.
My exploration urge was fulfilled a long time ago and very quickly by the threadbare implementation.

At the moment, I'm just doing a fairly random trail around the bubble running 1-way missions and passengers, in a multi-purpose Annie build for materials gathering.
Been in the Old Worlds area for a week or so now.

At a push I'd argue I might want to see you in open if its a CG and a competing event such as the war for lugh, but beyond that I dont see any reason why you should be forced there, because you're not competing in any manner against other players.

This, as a sidebar is the attitude of most Open advocates on this forum, and not some shadowy ulterior motive being put forward as griefer shills, which is the way it gets portrayed.

well, noseing them around and getting away with it can be fun. ofc that's preference and no fun lasts forever.

but yeah that's an usual pattern in games with multiplayer, at least for me: make cash in pve/grind whatever, so i can happily burn it in pvp.

sad to hear you're tight on credits. would wing up to boost a bit but you're on xbox, right? and i assume you don't like small ships. a pity because they're cheap as peanuts, no problem to loose and actually fun. personally i'm not actually even playing atm, just configuring and experimenting with my new controllers. it takes a bit of a hassle to set up (have to move furniture around each time) so i really only get to do it once a week at most.

Its a self inflicted grind...I could walk away from it anytime I want, and will do soon enough. Had fun walking the dogs as I called it fer a couple weeks, but its getting seriously boring now and with all this drama going on, I think the time is fast approaching leaving all this nonsense behind and going home to colonia with all my engineered spoils...that being the original reason I came back here at all just got a bit distracted by the other 98% of the game ^

They want easy prey to kill with their engineered death machines.

Sometimes I use a cheap ship to test the gank level on engineers' places or cgs. Without fail, somebody just tries to destroy my ship with nary a peep.

Having someone else to interact with. It’s a big place and NPCs are trash. The only hope of having some form of a living galaxy is us. I’m usually happy just to get an o7 back honestly.

No problem. Add me to your friends list and I will gladly send you a 07 each and every time I see you log in. :)

I will even report the current galactic weather conditions in the solo dimension

These little concepts I like to call "innocent until proven guilty", and, "it's rude to make baseless defamatory accusations."

Imagine a community where it's totally ok to make nasty claims about people, and it's entirely their responsibility to constantly prove their innocence.

That....that is what these forums are for isn't it?

You know what, I'm almost (almost!) coming around to the idea that Open Only Power Play should be a thing. IF it becomes the "PvP Flag" for Open. You pledge to a Power? You're fair game for opposing Power CMDRs. BUT it has to come with better protection for players not pledged to a Power. If PvP players are going to be given their "meaningful PvP" then it's only fair to offer better protection for PvE players against "non-meanginful PvP", don't you think?

If either party isn't pledged, they are subject to the C&P ramifications. Or if both parties are pledged and not in a PP area of either CMDR.

I'm thinking about doing the next CG in Open - we'll see what it is and let the fun and games commence ;)

If you can do GMT/UTC times then my offer stands as I should be free tomorrow from around 1930 - 2000.

Otherwise as a filthy casual I can only play on Mondays, from around the same times. Unless I have important work to do and I am procrastinating.

Here's what you're missing out on not having me in Open:

1. Pad-hogging. Yes, I land on pads, walk away from my PC without logging out to produce biowaste, make food, entertain my wife, shoot pests in my yard, or do whatever I need to do, without any consideration for your Cr/Hr, and don't care.

2. Terrible puns and limericks - I broadcast in chat some of the most horrendous, though non-offensive puns, limericks, and poetry that would send the great Vogon poet-masters screaming from this reality.

3. Another Beluga in the Mailslot - yes, I fly one, I fly one often, and I've even backed them through mailslots.

4. Me singing sea chanties in voice chat. Trust me, you don't want to hear it. Tom cats throw shoes at me.

I also have no interest in exchanging fire and wasting my credits or your credits as a result. I pay no attention to BGS, and will work for every, any and all factions at the same time. In the end, I usually leave a zero-sum effect where ever I go. In rare instances, I will trigger booms when it benefits me, usually in fringe systems.

I'm taking a weekend trip so Thurs/Mon will probably work - giving a heads up on our arrival time might make life interesting too ;)

Yes, they have. You've probably been too transfixed with the Open-Only thing to notice what the actual Powerplayers have been saying about the other mechanics changes that have been proposed.

Preparation Cycle Split & Vote to veto preparation

Prevents (or makes it much harder for) 5thC to make "bad" preparations, and allows the pledged players more control over where their efforts can be focused for expansion. If they are expanding, they are not stagnating.

Vote to withdraw from system

Lets the pledged players ditch unwanted systems, allowing them to focus more on expanding and defending systems they do want. Again, if they are looking outwards instead of defending rubbish systems, they are not stagnating.

Guaranteed undermine if 100% more than fortification

This one is a direct conflict instigator, and works hand-in-hand with Open only. Undermining and defending against it becomes meaningful and players have a real reason to defend their systems through patrols and blockades. Sounds pretty exciting and not stagnating to me!

Overhead removal and slight increase to distance cost modifier

Removing the overheads and increasing the distance modifier allows powers to stretch their reach. Stagnation? Nah.

Ethos Override

Making the Control systems the focal point of ethos is great for making them conflict flashpoints - there will be undermining, fortification and BgS activities concentrated in Control systems. Should keep folks plenty busy without stagnating.

Missions give Powerplay successes

More choice of activities to support your power - variety is good and keeps stagnation at bay!

I hope that helps.

I'll throw back an o7 here than there but I often miss the chat window anyway, and the keyboard is an inconvenience that I've largely bypassed with my setup, so the extra hollow square is probably about as much social interaction as you'll get out of me.

Exactly this.

Communicating with players while flying is tedious at best. Hence, I often dont bother. Either I fail to notice the hail in time - the game doesnt exactly go out of its way to notify you of incoming communications - or I simply cant be bothered typing out a response like its 1984.

Check out G19 in Released/active Player Apps. G19 integrates with Windows TTS (voice packs) to read all communication messages! Thus, I actually hear CMDRs "voices" in-game! Plus, with variation of sex and dialect in the voices along with some audio conditions which G19 does, the voices are quite unique and immersive!

Open is just hype, and pretty harmless really. I've been in open since last April and only got interdicted by one (1!) player, and that was in Shin Dez, and I managed to evade his interdiction with my superior Asp turning ability at 50% thrust. Since Law and Order was put into the game, its now almost zero.

I dont play CZs in Open simply because I DONT want PVP. PPVE is fine, I dont mind more human players on my side. But PVP can get bloody very quickly, and there is a 90% risk factor I will die in an open CZ.

edit: I guess NCP only factions would solve this, so we can choose PPVE or PVP. I doubt the Nehet Silver Ring would let anyone join up and fight with them in an open war.

Player interaction has allways been preferable to me. Players can interact with you in ways NPCs never will. You can make friends with players where you can't with NPCs. Players can be fantastic enemies as well. Making you have to think several 'moves' ahead where NPCs can barely make break a sweat.

There is a reason the vast majority of games are now multiplayer and online now even with the negative aspects of human interaction.
