ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I'm getting really a lot of chromatic Aboration. Anyone else get this

yes, in the periphery, but if I look at stuff dead on it's not too bad.

I think the the light on dark starfield and the high contrast of the instrumentation really makes any CA stand out.

I posted a few dozen pages back about not actually having the rift set up right, make sure you're not suffering as I was. The demo room available from the config app is almost counter-productive in terms of set-up as it provides a very comfortable view with a wide tolerance for set-up.

Here's how I made it better:

1. Measure your IPD and enter that (google how to do it manually or trust the tool)
2. measure your eye to neck dimensions and add those in.
3. pop the rift on and fire up the demo room
4. reset the view and stare directly at the ruler on the desk by moving your head and keeping your eyes fairly central (hope that makes sense!)
5. Move the rift about on your noggin until the ruler is as free from CA as you can make it.

I was having real trouble with CA in ED until I did that and realised that I was wearing the DK2 just a little lower than I should have been. I still get CA in ED, but it's nowhere near as bad.

don't get too much as long as I position it on my head correctly and don't look around with my eyes (I tend to move my head instead)

I do but the menus are extremely hard to read, however for combat its amazing you can track the targets so much easier. CV1 is going to be amazing Im sure too.

Was looking to get a DK2 but I will wait until the resolutions are a bit better, will the CV2 be better in that regard?

Prob needs to be at least 1440p for it to be viable, I understand that it is prob great for immersion now but I guess it feels like your character should of gone to specsavers!

I'm using one, it's pretty amazing for immersion, but as mentioned above some text is hard to read still (though much better than the illegible DK1).

For combat, I'm not convinced that the resolution is good enough to match playing with a head tracker (have that too). Objects are still quite blurry at range and that inhibits long range accuracy (for me anyway).

I guess the DK2 is absolutly measured by expectations... some see rather the problems, while others can just enjoy whats there. For me that means, keeping the expectations low. :)

No going back sounds good... seems like some can play for hours and some get motion sick after a while. Well, i guess i have at least 2 months now to think about it, until mine arrives.

I don't understand everyone saying it is hard to read. Main menu is very crisp, I can easily read all of the cocpit menu text except the panels showing target distance etc and fuel. Those are readable if I lean forward. Target info on HUD (dist in SC) is easily readable too. All with no AA

Try reading the sub menus in the Galactic map, they can be read, but they're not clear - to say they were would be misleading.

Ah yeah, the DK2 doesn't allow you to change the IPD unfortunately.
Since your IPD is at the very high end, you will get a rather poor experience I'm afraid. There might very well be blurry image, and certainly a lot of Chromatic Abberations. :\

the Consumer Rift will obviously allow you to alter your IPD.

But there is hope for you. Someone is making hardware modifications that are easy to install. He hasn't made them for the DK2 yet, but he had for the DK1. He says he's working on DK2 version very soon.

I agree, I can make them out better if I lean into them a bit.

Inside the Galactic map with the rift is.

This I agree with.
Its playable, immersion is superb.... but resolution is not high enough if I am brutally honest.

I love it, its real fun to play in, but given the native resolution of my monitor and the crispness i am used to, I am struggling to get over looking at distant objects looking like late 90's graphics... he he, ok slight exaggeration, but its definitely needs more definition of objects at distance.
