For multi crew immersion, the audio from other players should sound like its coming from within the ship (like echos and sound bouncing off materials in the ships cockpit), and only over a microphone when the canopy breaks.

Not necessarily, most communication within multi-crew military vehicles in real life is done via headsets and throat mics, normally because the inside of the vehicle is so damn loud. Now while the ships in ED don't seem too loud inside (at least while not being pummeled by missiles) I can definitely see an advantage to relying on comms rather than simple speaking.

Being a helicopter door gunner myself, I know very well the merits of using headset based communication, but you're right, the ships aren't that loud. So helmet mic comms for after the canopy busts makes sense, but not before them. Obviously the greatest thing to do would have an option between the default audio and my "not so loud bridge" regular ol talking to each other audio.
