I think it'd be interesting to hear about your reasons for supporting your faction of choice (or for going independent). I'm particularly interested in reasons based on faction ideology, politics, and history, as I'm still relatively new to the Elite setting and enjoy learning about the factions in particular.

I personally haven't made a decision on this yet, which is one of my selfish reasons for creating this thread. Hopefully your feedback will help myself and others make up our minds, and to be able to justify the decision from an in-character perspective.

Here's some basic faction resources for those of you who's in the same boat as me:
- Newsletter #22: Introducing the Galactic Power Blocs
- Elite: Dangerous Fiction Diary #1
- Elite Wiki: The Empire
- Elite Wiki: The Federation
- Elite Wiki: The Alliance

Any additional references would be appreciated!

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
The Empire of course.

They're the only faction that has much of a history, imho. Love the intrigue with the Duval line. Murder, succession, fanaticism, extermination of indigenous life in Achernar.... it's like something out of Dune. ;)

They're snazzy dressers.

Their ships look cooler.

Slaves.

Plus Achernar is just a cool star system.

Someone other than the Federation. Not really due to any of the lore out there, but more from habit through the Alpha/PB phase, helping the Eranin side. However, news of Feds shooting up slave cargo cannisters has all but solidified that choice. Until we have some answers to those questions of why, I will never back Federation causes.

Seriously, haven't really given much thought to it. I would think an explorer/trader would do better as an Independent anyway, unless they stuck to just one area of space.

I am against the Empire, I support all the other factions against it. I detest the very Imperial society, from the slavery to the aristocracy. And even their best ships aren't as pretty as an Eagle or a Hauler.:p

Independent. I want to experience life on the frontier of human space, with all the danger, hopelessness and camaraderie that comes with it - far away from the protective yet also authoritarian reach of the Federation or the Empire. Wild West in Space.

I do admit that the factions have their appeal, however, especially the Empire of Achenar. To experience the other side of the coin, so to say.
Maybe some day, in another life (read: with another commander). ;)

Independent because I only answer to my actions alone and nothing else. I feel though eventually I may gravitate toward the alliance but nothing is certain, however, I can be persuaded with enough money to be a a little partial depending on what the end result is.

Incidentally, are any of you clear on whether the Federation or the Empire is supposed to be most traditionally fascist, for example on social issues? I figure the Federation might have strict laws against 'undesirable behavior', and that it might be legal but considered shameful in the Empire due to their supposed honor-based culture.

On the other hand I don't have a clear idea of where Imperial culture is supposed to be on the scale between nobility and decadence. Part of me imagines them as the noble House Atreides from Dune, but another part of me imagines them as the terribly decadent capital citizens from the Hunger Games. Someone, please set me straight.

Yeah I gotta say whilst I am not completely decided I am strongly leaning towards the Empire. Which is ironic really when I don't agree with slavery or some of its more colourful ways of doing thing. But it sounds kinda scheming and full of intrigue.

And yeah.. Hopefully the ships. :)

Other than RP is there any reason to side with a particular faction?

I'm fairly certain we'll be able to advance through faction-specific ranks and gain access to increasingly lucrative faction missions. Perhaps it'll be a prerequisite for purchasing exclusive faction-specific spaceships, as well. Hopefully someone here can give us more details.

All this and more...

Independent at first

I'll start out independent, not because of the lore but because something sounds "right" (I can't put my finger on what it is exactly) about starting the game at Lave in a Cobra with only 100 credits and two pulse lasers.

Depending on who I meet after that and on what adventures I'll be in, I might join a faction later on.

The Illusive Pilot

Independent. Openly flying a banner for any of the factions can easily make you a target for their enemies, however, refusal to fly one may make you an enemy to those who are over zealous as well. Considering I intend to be primarily a trader dealing with those from all walks of life, independent seems the way to go.

This is quite a realistic political poll.

I know nothing of either faction.

There possibly no difference between them.

They are all corrupt and will ignore trivial crimes like murder for the price of a tonne of baked beans.

Independent (mercenary) because it's my personality and ED is synonym of freedom. But gladly, I will work for the three factions for the money, and the diversity in the game. For the military missions (and grades), my orientation will go towards the Empire
