Engineers Shield engineering: bring back Increased Optimal Mass as an experimental effect?

Back in the days of 2.4, you could get Increased Optimal Mass as a secondary effect, allowing you to do funky things like putting a size 5 shield generator on an Imperial Cutter. With the introduction of the new engineering system in 3.0, secondary effects were done away with, so this is no longer possible. Since this is kind of unfair towards people who don't have legacy engineered shield generators, wouldn't it be a good idea to bring back Increased Optimal Mass as an experimental effect?

Sandro has promised to bring it back after the initial engineering revamp feedback. Right now though it seems more like FD are hoping that we forget about that, just like G4 blueprints for SCBs, which never got added to any engineer, even though they are in the game. Bad bad style.

NO WAY am I forgetting about the lost Optimal Mass Shield Generator mod! FDEV, bring it back!

And GET TO WORK on those G4 SCB blueprints!!

I have all that stuff and much more besides.

On my legacy grade 5 fleet. And that's where they're staying!
Buggered if I am engineering my entire fleet again, doubly so if they want me to do it for worse stuff ;)

Agreed! Bring it Back, FD.

Regardless of whether the devs said that it would be added or that it might be added, I think it should be added because the current situation is unfair towards players who didn't engineer their shield gen before 3.0, and I think we can all agree that an increased optimal (and therefore maximum) mass is a very handy feature :)

+support

As someone that is running a C5 prismatic shield on a cutter, I support allowing this possibility for everyone else.

I can't agree more on this, it is so nice to have those Class 5 prismatics on the Cutter. I am so happy to have this, but then knowing that my friends and others are now unable to todo this sucks...

I'd like to know what would happen if I converted my legacy G5 Cutter Class 5 Prismatic to current G5 Engineering.

I could improve the shield Mj but would it remain on the ship. I know if I took it off I wouldn't be able to put it back on but would I still be able to Engineer it in situ to another Blue Print and have it remain functional ?

As far as I know, the shield would be still be mounted on the ship, but if you remove it, you will not be able to fit again on the cutter..

I know several guides on this used G1 rolls (as they are cheap) and then get the desired secondary effect, and then fit them on the cutter, and the go to the engineer with the Cutter and now change the engineering to what is desired, but with the thing that cannot put this shield back if removed.
And then we do not know if FDev would do anything in the future that will make modules that no longer fit the specs would not work.

So I would not personally do/test this.

.
What an elaborate answer...
.
Do you mean:
- No, I have one and I don't want the new buggers to also get shields like that.
- No, I don't think we should have disparity between old and new players and thus this actually has to be done.
- No, I don't think there should be any shield generators like that around, so the grandfathered shield generators should be nerfed.

My guess is that upgrading the legacy engineering to post-3.0 standards would remove the secondary effect of increased optimal mass. Your hull mass would then exceed your Shield Generator's Maximum Hull Mass, and you wouldn't have any shields at all. But I think you can imagine that I'm not going to try this out on my cargo Cutter.

never realized what promised is not what will be in game soon , meanwhile i enjoy my g5 prismatic grandfather at the cutter muhahah sorry dudes
