If it can happen to me, it can happen to you.

I've been playing since Premium Beta, way back in 3300.
I'm Double Elite, in Exploration and Trade.
I went to Beagle Point with Distant Worlds.
I've been to Sagittarius A* twice.
One of my Home systems is Colonia. I go there every Xmas/New Year, (Jaques throws a great party) Neutron-jumping nearly all the way.
I've been to every star in Earth's night sky that I can point to and say "That's <insert name here>".
I've been to every nebula I can name.
I used to have at least one of every ship in the game, until I sold the ones I knew I'd never fly again.
I still have assets of over 2 Billion credits, and over 500 Million in the bank.
Let's just say I'm an experienced long-distance star pilot.
This has NEVER happened to me before, but Thursday night, I committed the crime of Gross Stupidity In Charge Of A Starship.
I got off with a warning.
I called the Fuel Rats.

Last weekend, for a change of pace, I was mining in one of my other Home systems, when I saw that there was a mining CG in Synuefai something-or-other, so I thought "cool". But my mining ship in that system is a T10 with pitiful range, so I thought "ExploraConda? No. It's a CG there's bound to be griefers there. I need proper shields and thrusters." So I collected my other Anaconda, flew it to my other other Home system, re-outfitted it for mining and headed into the Black.
When I got there, I swapped out my fuel scoop for more cargo space and started mining. Thursday, when the CG ended, I collected my reward and headed back to the bubble.
I wasn't really paying attention.
OK, *maybe* the extremely large vodka & coke *might* have had something to do with it.

Jump, Honk, Jump, Honk... I remember thinking "Wow! There's a lot of T-Tauri stars around here."
On my next jump, I saw that the next star was a red dwarf, so no worries.
Jump, Honk ...
Jum... <<INSUFFICIENT FUEL>>
...
... "Why am I not fuel scooping? Did I turn it off?"
Check Modules panel.
"Oh, Pooh" said Piglet. My fuel scoop was 170 LY behind me at the CG station, and the nearest inhabited system was 79 LY ahead. I had about 2 tons of fuel, and with a ~28 LY range, even Premium Jumponium wouldn't get me there.
So a HUGE thank-you to the Fuel Rats (Cheese Be Upon Them!)
They even informed me that yes, there was a station with large landing pads in that nearest inhabited system.
I wasted some Jumponium just to make absolutely sure I got there, and summoned my fuel scoop.
I hope I remember to install it before launching.

I very nearly made the same mistake (but for a shorter range). I had bought and outfitted my Krait MkII, launched, made the first jump and (as I always do) tried to scoop. Nothing. I checked the Star was suitable (it was), and then checked through the modules to see if the fuel scoop was turned off. It was not turned off because it was not fitted. Turned around, headed back, bought and fitted the scoop, and re-started my journey.

I got caught with a bounty in scoopless Chieftain out in the Pencil Nebula after the Speedbowl (check out those normal flight metres per sec during that Cmdr's test run).

No access to station services, got assist by Fuel Rats with a 500Ly or so escort back to the bubble. That included the Rat having to make at least two trips back out for more limpets (which didn't get a combat Chieftain very far on each refuel) and a third for a code red rescue so I ended up limping in on economic route plotting.

Being attacked twice for the data survey cache in my hold, making rendezvous and even getting a surpsrise hull repair to boot, it matched the fun of getting the Chief up to a frameshift free 7km/s. Great experience what I like most is what a finely tuned machine the service is, "dispatch, en route". Awesome stuff o7

I know. They were there for me in like 10 minutes.:cool:

The (other) stupid thing is... I have given advice to n00b explorers many times in many threads, and I always say "Check your fuel.
BTW, did I say to check your fuel?
Before you jump again... CHECK YOUR FUEL!
Did you check your fuel?
Check it again!
(Your fuel, that is.)"

It happened to me once. I forgot to fit my fuel scoop as well. But I didn't call the fuel rats.

I logged on one of my alts and fitted for a fuel rat mission, then went and met me. I told me not to forget the fuel scoop again. Me thanked I and we went about my separate business.
Did 'me' learn me's lesson, and not do it again?

My stats are similar to the OP, I don't drink & fly and I play safety first. Needless to say I have never needed the fuel rats but I don't doubt it will happen one day ;)

I bet even fuel rats need fuel rats sometimes :D

This is my new definition of the turn of shame: I like to fill every slot of my combat ship with HRP or MRP so when combat is done in that system, leave the station, jump to that first star and.... <gulp>.. no scooping .... TUUURRRN OF SHAAME back to the station. I spose the vodka had something to do with you not noticing the lack of scooping for several jumps. Sheesh.

I think I need a lie down.
