What other games are we all playing?

For other quick basic tips:
- always check at the smithy if you can upgrade your weapon or craft another in a different tree with better damage. Elements/Effects are nice, but not as nice as raw damage, so using the biggest number you have access to will help.
- armour is important, but not as much for numbers (many sets are close) as for the skills each part provides. Look at them and select the pieces that contribute to your build (some skills increase attack, defense, HP, evade iframes, specific elemental damage, bowgun ammo, etc...). Or, if you feel comfortable enough, sod it and go with fashion. That works too. :p
- break to sharpen your blade as needed. You want to maintain your highest sharpness as much as possible: more damage and less chance for the weapon to bounce off the hide/shell.
- always eat before hitting the grounds, there's a canteen at the campsite too. Feel free to play and discover food combos (plenty of quests later will add ingredients) but otherwise, the Chef's recommendation will net you a fair bit of bonus health and stamina.
- about stamina, carry or make a few well-done steaks to replenish your stamina gauge if needed on a long quest.
- herbs and honey are plentiful and farmable at the HQ, so you should pretty much always go out on quest with 10 Mega Potions, 10 Potions and 10 Honey (the latter two to craft into Mega Potions after you used the first 10).
- for captures, you'll want ivy and spider webs (to make nets and therefore pitfall traps), lightning bugs (for shock traps) as well as parashrooms and sleep herbs (for tranq bombs), so always pick up these if you see them. Even if you don't try to capture yet, they'll come in handy at some point.

Nice :D I actually already switched to always carrying max potions to max out the HP bar. But I have to remember the steaks, I always use most of my stamina bar jogging after monster across the forest.

There's also the Ancient potion: same as max potion, but it does both health and stamina. Can't remember the formula (think there are two of them too), but it's easily discoverable from the crafting menu a bit below the max one. Handy to have that on hand if needed alright.

During my vacation, I have picked up a number of titles, but the one I am enjoying the most is OGRE. The scenario editor allows me to create new maps, and force mixes. I have run up almost five hundred hours playing it.

Have not played Elite all summer. Lots of stuff out there to try.

Fired up Hitman yesterday.

WOW!

Did not enjoy Absolution, especially given how good Blood Money was - and still is! So I was delighted to see just how good the latest edition is.

Elsewhere I fired up Red Dead Redemption after many years. Last save? 08-NOV-2011 :)

What a game.

My one regret at giving my Xbox one away to my mates kids for Christmas... no more Red Dead [sad]

Playing SOMA. Not sure if Elite fans would like it, as it's just about the polar opposite of a Elite: linear, story driven game, essentially a first-person point-and-click adventure game, high production values, extremely detailed environments, lots of atmospheric/environmental storytelling, voice acting, etc. Same people that made the lovecraftian/gothic horror game Amnesia: Dark Descent. This game is also a horror game in theory, but it is MUCH more varied in tone. Lots of humor, more character/dialogue driven, lots of sequences characterized by wonder, curiosity, and exploration, and then punctuated by sequences of tension, dread, escape, and stealth/survival horror. All wrapped up in a completely bonkers sci-fi plot full of M. Night Shamalyan-style twists and turns (in a good way).

Havent finished it so can't say if the whole story pays off but overall love it so far.

No Man's Sky, since it went on sale in late July. I'd never played it, but obviously hanging around here I've certainly heard about it.
It's a lot of fun.
Much electronic ink has been spilled over ED vs NMS. I won't add to it (much); I have different expectations for each and they both scratch a certain gaming itch.
Now if Frontier and Hello games had a baby, with each of their respective strengths, that would be amazing.
I'm not holding my breath. :D In the meantime, I'll enjoy both for what they are.

Just bought the Bard's Tale Trilogy Remastered on GOG. I know what I'll be playing when I'm not obsessing over Monster Hunter :D

I am years behind on my games (largely thanks to ED and VR) so dont laugh but i just started Mad Max.... it is a really fun game (in short bursts). That, GTAV and Dying light will take most of my time up for the next while i think (combined with ED and ESO)

@hunvagy what do you make of monster hunter? To me it looks fantastic and could be my next go to game when the group i play with are done with dying light....

"Worthabuy" Mack seems to love the game in principle but claims it is broken to the point of being unplayable in co-op however at the moment.... So i am thinking it is one to pick up in 6 months when patched (and cheaper).

Yeah, the servers have been a pain, though it worked fine yesterday. If Capcom irons that problem out, it is going to be epic. Especially after we found out that volumetric fog is an insane resource hog and switching it off turned my less then stellar 40 fps into 59-60. Having a lot of fun with it, if you don't mind your game being a constant stream of boss fights and clutch moments.

Yeah, make sure you read about it and watch a few streams before to know what you're getting into. It's a very simple game loop: gear up, fight, loot, rinse and repeat. And while there are a few maps and a fair amount of monsters, you end up fighting the same things over and over again. Exploration is limited in that the maps aren't that big (although they may feel like it at first) and you're quickly intimately familiar with them. Same goes for the wildlife, you'll have quickly seen it all. So what's left is fighting the large monsters and using the parts to keep crafting more of the various weapons available for variety. It's great if you enjoy the combat for itself. If combat is just a means to an end, then it's probably not for you because everything else is padding.

If you played Dark Souls (3 in particular, in terms of speed), just imagine it with fewer and weaker mobs, fewer but more open maps, many more bosses, and all weapon types available from the start although you need to grind the parts to upgrade/infuse them. That's sort of what MH is like.

OG Star Wars Battlefront 2.

I forgot how fun this game is. AI can actually beat the player, and resource management is vital in the fast-paced action, rewarding the situationally aware player.

My mate is coming round this weekend for a split-screen PvP Galactic Conquest campaign.

Split-screen ain't dead yet!

it kind of sounds a bit like evolve to me, would that be a fair summation?

Haven't played Evolve I'm afraid, but from the looks of it it's about a team of 4 hunting a bigger prey, so yes, it's sort of the idea I guess, but you don't need to be 4 and the monster is always AI. Multiplayer is very much optional. I solo most of the time personally, but when I occasionally team up with friends, the game scales up the monsters accordingly, so it doesn't trivialise things too much.
