Game's future

Which I find quite appalling, cos this means that hamsterwheelie gameplay and overreliance on RNG is accepted by large chunks of player bases. It shouldn't be a thing in an Elite game that was marketed as being SP capable.

I think the game would be in a better state and the playerbase bigger if they replaced some of the grind and RNG with actual gameplay and persistence.

It's doing its thing, a new update must come out to lift up the average players.

True, but as long as it doesn't reach a historical low as you wrongly claimed earlier it would be nonsense to say that the game is dying.

NMS for example currently only has 10% of their peak players and yet it would be absolute nonsense to claim that the game is dying.

Well, the numbers certainly do tell a story. Just look at the 2017 year vs. 2018 like you would when comparing financial performance: in 2017 the numbers show 9000 some odd players on this Monday; in 2018 they show roughly 2800 players or less than 1/3 the number playing today versus last year at this time. It happens to be extreme for today and looks like a historical low. But the 2018 numbers for the past month or two are roughly half that from 2017. It most certainly is in decline year over year. But again, so what. It's an old game. So why argue against this?

Average player numbers from January-April are all higher in 2018 compared to 2017 and May-August is only slightly lower.
Not sure which numbers you are looking at but they are clearly not from Elite Dangerous.

Repped.

This is the whole dilemma with ED, at least for me.
And fixing the long standing bugs.

When they first announced the Beyond updates, stating that they'd be working on the core gameplay I expected just that, plus fixing the long standing bugs which imho are part of the core gameplay.
Q4 must be a magical update because so far Beyond has been a great let down regarding the core gameplay improvement.
And don't try to sell me the revised C&P because it's still a stupid system imho.

There seems to be a lot less complaining about the Engineers though. And the Exploration and Mining overhaul along with the codex sounds pretty interesting. For those interested in multiplayer (not me) Squdrons also seem to be a good addition.

I still get your point though. ;)

Hang on have we switched to GAH NOT DOOMED !!!, I didn't even see the goalposts shifting they just crossed the intervening gap instantaneously.

Yeah I have to admit, the engineers are better now, at least I think so, except for some engineer unlocking grinds.

We don't know yet how the exploration and mining updates will turn out in Q4.
The things we saw up untill now look promising indeed but I'll have to see the whole package before I can give my personal verdict.
As I said before, Q4 will have a huge impact on my ED playtime wether it be positive or negative.

And... no. Seems like you need some help using the Steam Charts:

1. Search for "Elite" - press enter after typing; select a 1YR view by clicking mouse on the 1YR symbol; move mouse cursor to the far right side; note the number that appears; currently shows 3106

Now you're half way through this comparison, isn't this fun?[big grin] Next:

2. Don't change the current view - if you did go all the way back to step #1 above; move mouse cursor to the left side of the chart; that's data from 2017; note the number which currently shows 9325

FINISHED! You now have a comparison of this year versus last year. And for this year the number is lower than last year. Does this mean an increase or decrease? I'll help you here as well: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/decrease

Hope this is helpful! If you're still lost let someone else know.

The engineers are way better now than they were before. We get to craft much better and consistent modules with far less grind for those top tier mods.

I agree with this. We can't judge what the player base is doing right now. There's no doubt that elite is several years old and some players will have semi retired, some still active whilst others are waiting for their favourite roadmap features to be implemented. Once those have materialised I think we'll see the true picture.

Elite seems to be almost unique in my experience. I have never owned a game and gotten so much out of it for a single purchase and more content is yet to come this year- and there's still developer interest in yet more future work. Honestly, how many other games out there have so much continuous development?

I think Elite is a victim of its own success. People are so involved and invested with it, and yet with a little more fine tuning dev wise, we could get an even better game. So people harp on in these forums wanting their own agenda added, or pushing fdev to complete things they said they could do...but we do have to realise that we are lucky to have the game that we have and the development that's being committed to right now. Like I said, most other companies would probably have stopped.

That's complete nonsense. First, you are comparing peak numbers, not average players with the chart. Second, you are comparing the highest peak number of the whole month September of last year to the peak number of today and it isn't even weekend or prime time yet.
Sorry but it looks like you don't understand steamcharts at all.

And it seems you're still having trouble with the charts. Maybe a friend or parent can help you out. But the comparison between days is very clear for (most of) us to see. The 2017 daily numbers are typically much higher than the 2018 daily numbers over the past 3-4 months in particular. The long term trend line is also pretty clear showing the gradual decline over time. And once more, this is normal as a game gets older. And shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

It's too bad you're struggling with the charts as they are one of the few bits of public data for this game and others.

That's more of an opinion, I do agree that average players are better though.

Both numbers are useful. IMO the average players likely reflects the activity of the core/hard core players more so than the entire player base. Peak would show those that log in and either stay or leave (or log :)).

One thing is for sure as more and more is added and hardware requirements increase the player base will dwindle as 60fps games are great but choppy games cause hardware is struggling is not.

One such kick in the nads is the 32bit and Mac players each of them were/are being cast out of ED because no fault of their own. Yes the latter something should have been done MUCH sooner to sort this Metal has been out for years it's nothing new and Apple has a history of screwing everyone over to get total control of their brand.

When 32bit was rife I used to play loads now that's gone my playing dwindled now I am on hiatus as I don't have hardware to play it at present as my laptop ran 32bit beautiful but 64bit was a slideshow.

Doomsayers only have to be right once and the more dissatisfied a user base becomes the less people are there to recommend it. Look at the latest patches and you can see the "is this it" group rearing up in each of em as the major patches don't seem that "major" to be honest for me the last BIG patch was Thargoids anything after that is stuff which should have been sorted years ago.

The last thing the doomsayers are is right. Most players don't bother with forums, of those who do most move on when they stop playing a game.

What are you left with and how much do you value their opinions ?.

It's pointless to discuss with you since you are evidently unable to understand simple logic.
