As someone who's been beyond Beagle Point I can say that's not entirely accurate.
Explorers, both real life and in games go strange places because they can put their name on it (and/or discovery of heretofore unknown resources). Think of Everest and all the people who've climbed it and planted a flag. While everyone remembers Sir Edmund Hillary, he wasn't the only one to plant a flag, and each expedition is pretty well known, at least in mountaineering circles.
The thing is, in Elite only ONE CMDR gets to plant their flag, ever, and everyone else is an unknown (excepting the rare occasions of winged first discoveries).
So as to my question, if the systems, suns and planets look the same in the Cone Nebula as everywhere else, why go? The main sequence stars there aren't rainbow colored and full of cotton candy, they look the same as every other sun in the galaxy. If there's no visual spectacle to be had (i.e. the view from the summit), and the fame and fortune has already been had by someone else, then what is the point, really?
I mean, honestly if exploration didn't allow you to put your name on something then how motivated would you REALLY be to see your ten thousandth yellow sun that looks exactly the same as Sol?
