Community Event / Creation ***Attention Explorers*** GNOSIS Jumps planned THROUGH a permit Lock !

This will be a stupid question, but once it leaves the Cone sector, we can either go with it to the Rift, or we have to make our way back to the Bubble (assuming that's what we want to do), correct?.

I've not done anything like this yet (in 9 months of playing), and figure it would be a good prelude to DW2, just want to make sure I know exactly what I'm getting into if I decide to head down there :)

You won't be able to go back outside of the Cone Sector yourself as it's surrounded by COL 70 SECTOR stars which require a permit. Your only way out of that area will be to make the next jump (into the rift) and find a way home from there. Up that jump range, sir, or stock up on Jumponium.

BTW, if you do have to do an extended stay on the Gnosis, keep an eye out in Casino #2; there's a guy named Kirk that keeps trying to entice players to join him in a game of "Fizbin" - keeps making up the rules. Don't fall for it.

Is everyone talking an explorer build? Is there any point in taking say a krait anti thargoid build?

I'm taking my Anaconda Combat Explorer. 55ly jump while being able to confidently drop into (and clean out) Weapons Fire Threat 5-6 USS's, handle Thargoid scouts, or provide anti-missile cover while I trundle around Guardian sites. ...and because we might be surprised out there in a way that requires a more directed form of diplomacy (he says, hopefully). With two Scarabs and two SLFs, my Moody Blue is pretty forgiving of reckless driving and able to fend off what ails me. And it has room for my jogging track, archery range, and null-G boxing cage. Also does a fair job of keeping the neighbor's kids in their own #$&^ yard.

I was going to use my "full-explo" (never go "full-explo") Asp Explorer, but I'm considering some "modifications" to allow it to defend itself a little better if necessary. Or possibly kit-out my DBX with some weapons instead (large HP is tempting)...

Decisions, decisions!!!

Never saw the point for an anti-Thargoid build. This conflict isn't going to be solved with guns.

But I'm on the Gnosis with my iCourier and an assortment of modules to swap out to convert her between combat and exploration build. And while she doesn't sport an archery range, I can land her in the middle of a ruin field to provide air support from her point defense.
Among those modules is also a Xeno scanner, so while, compared to a Corvette, her firepower may be somewhat lacking, she'll be perfectly fine as fast recon scout that can run from anything.

Hm, this might call for a rethink of my current ship.
Thankfully someone is asking the right questions.

I brought 'Pleiades Rising' to the Gnosis to take part in that adventure [up]

Is everyone in open or in PG (which one?)

This may be a dumb question and likely answered elsewhere so forgive me if so.

Hasn't that area already been tagged like way back before it was permit locked? I get the idea of wanting to see new areas, but none of the "space" is going to look different than any of the rest of the game, and if everything is already claimed then what is the point?

Because it's there?

Explorers go strange places, because they can. If someone has been there before isn't all that important, the personal journey also counts.

I guess exploring isn't for you. Which is fine, each to their own. But believe me when I say that, to us, yes, everything does look different, and new, and wondrous.

I'm aware of a few CMDR's planning to grief anyone they can find after the jump. Anyone interested in organizing a private security force, search and rescue squad, or are there fuel-rats coming along?

As someone who's been beyond Beagle Point I can say that's not entirely accurate.

Explorers, both real life and in games go strange places because they can put their name on it (and/or discovery of heretofore unknown resources). Think of Everest and all the people who've climbed it and planted a flag. While everyone remembers Sir Edmund Hillary, he wasn't the only one to plant a flag, and each expedition is pretty well known, at least in mountaineering circles.

The thing is, in Elite only ONE CMDR gets to plant their flag, ever, and everyone else is an unknown (excepting the rare occasions of winged first discoveries).

So as to my question, if the systems, suns and planets look the same in the Cone Nebula as everywhere else, why go? The main sequence stars there aren't rainbow colored and full of cotton candy, they look the same as every other sun in the galaxy. If there's no visual spectacle to be had (i.e. the view from the summit), and the fame and fortune has already been had by someone else, then what is the point, really?

I mean, honestly if exploration didn't allow you to put your name on something then how motivated would you REALLY be to see your ten thousandth yellow sun that looks exactly the same as Sol?

While the nebula itself might be tagged, the general area around it probably won't be. After 4 weeks of hypersaturation with some hundred commanders, the entire pocket behind the permit lock might be tagged, though.
But there will be lots of things happening, probably. Lots of meetups, shenanigans, talk on the forum & Discord. You can meet cmdrs & socialize. I like the social aspect of exploration.
I'm bringing a disposable Imp Courier, so I can always go back if I find the area boring.
