What has ED forced you to do?

I spent 3 days with learning how to overclock my machine, with many moments I thought, I have destroyed it and 20 € for a new cpu fan...

Fortunately I already had a beastly gaming rig and 3 monitors. So all I needed to buy was the ED beta (unfortunately I got to the party late and couldn't get in on the lifetime expansion pack thing) and an x52pro.....so far. Will probably pick up a trackir, voice attack, and an oculus rift once the consumer version is available.

So far I'm in for:

£1300 new PC
£450 new 2440 monitor
£200 x 2 for 'supporting monitors I don't really use...
£350 DK1
£150 trackIR
£25 custom 'wayland megacorp - making better worlds' trucker cap so I have something to put my trackIR thingy on
£50 trackIR pro tracker (before I got my custom cap)
£198 x52 pro
£100 premium beta
£10 various skins for eagle & sidewinder

Still need

Voice attack - after reading lots of great posts/vids on this I'm convinced
DK2 and/or final version
To learn how to us the trackIR equipment

Just bought

£600 780ti classified atx

Eeek! I hadn't realised I'd spent that much...Er... Don't tell the wife! :)

ED has forced me to buy a hotas-x r9 270x, 3 IPS monitors, headtracker and voice attack

very expensive game haha

Truckloads of new PC hardware to much to actually mention.
OK Iwould probably have bought it anyhow. But ED made the
purchases happen sooner.

FD forced me to do it..... I assume it was FD that was the little voice in my head.... either way.... THEY ALL HAD TO DIE....

:D

Well thanks to Mr B and friends, I built my first pc. I knew ED was coming and wanted to be prepared
The shop bought Packard Bell machine I had for 2 years was not for gaming. It was a micro case with one fan . Kept over heating (non airconditioned Spain here)
Wanted to get best bang for buck so took the plunge. Recycled the i7, hd, and cd drive. Corsair Vengance case (with window, I want to see my creation :)), GTX 660, 120gb ssd, after market cooler, loads of fans. Nothing amazing, but for me it´s great. To top it off got 2 19" square monitors for free that sit quite well either side of a 22" wide screen. Works a treat.
The Mrs then got PB for me for xmas. Hid the paper work in the bottom of a box of socks she bought me as a gift. Funny girl.
Managed to get a T-flight HOTAS and bits for head tracking out of her for valentines day too.
The worst thing about building my own PC is, now I want to do another. Really enjoyed the experience, researching parts etc. Think I´ve got to get a few years out the one I´ve got though.
Wouldn´t say they forced me as such, but certainly inspired.

Hmm, let's see, this will not be pleasant reading.

£1850 for PC and all peripherals (i7 4790k + 780ti) -only had cheapish laptops for a decade.
£170 for X55
£300 for big comfy John Lewis leather chair (justified to myself after recent back Op)
£10 mic
£50 ED SB1
£35 expansion packs.
£25 headphones
£285 DK2 (I figured the 780ti would definitely run it whilst the CV1 might not, roll on October)

That's just over £2700 total (happily mostly funded by cash invested in company share schemes just after the crash when the share price was low, which matured recently).

Way way back in the day (yes it's another one of those posts) I was heavily into flight and combat sims and shelled out a ton of money for a CH PRO setup with the Combatstick, the pro throttle and pedals... Set me back a few hundred even back in the 90's, but for games like Jane's Longbow and X Wing vs Tie fighter and the like, it was the only way to fly.

Then sims went extinct as a genre and they ended up collecting dust, getting in the way and going in a box for a few years to be moved from place to place and never opened. I ended up selling the whole lot for $50 at a discount electronics store some time in the 2000's.

So then ED comes along. I don't need to comment about what there is to like because there's a ton of threads about that. But I will say that it's the first game to come out in a decade that made me miss my old HOTAS setup.

More than that, it made me go to Amazon.com and buy a new CH Pro Fighterstick (upgrade! woohoo!) and pro throttle less than an hour ago. They should be here Friday. I think it's gonna be a good weekend.

I'm gonna hold off on the pedals this time - don't think I need 'em for ED just for yaw control... But if they ever come out with Longbow 3 I'll chip in.

Thanks, Braben & Co for re-igniting a passion I'd lost!

Does anyone want to answer they question "What did ED do for you?" with you answer being "I bought Paelen a new video card?" :p

ED made me hook up my old Nostromo n50 speedpad.

Well, I've been tag teamed...
By David Braben and Chris Roberts..
With ED and SC announced, I decided my old rig that just about runs
civilization V was long overdue an upgrade.

I pledged high up on both of them, as at the time I had a fair amount of disposible income. Then I got talked into buying a house.. This house had a well hidden damp problem that has cost me a ton of money and time to repair. And still sucks up every last penny of my income.

However, through wheeling and dealing and favours and sheer determination, I have managed to knock together a decent quad core AMD rig in a nice coolermaster storm trooper case. :) I've also managed to invest in a saitek x52 and track ir5 by selling on ebay anything I could live without.. ;)

force me to make a deal with myself not to buy the game until I actually finish and release my own simple android game and finish off the design document for the next one, still about a 2 week away from doing both, hopefully I will done in time to download Beta 2.

it also force me to look for a new desk for my computer, one big enough to comfortably hold all the extra new stuff I will want to get when I can finally buy the game and download it. Sadly having trouble finding a big enough desk that I like.

I'm one of the lucky ones I guess, got a gaming rig so it runs OK as is,. I've spent a lot of time optimising my PC to run quite well, overclocked most aspects and it has rock solid components, most of them overclock with less volts than standard.
I play Arma so I already have TrackIR, 144hz screen, dolby 5.1 headset etc.

One thing I'm missing is HOTAS, being an Arma pilot I should of had this earlier but I got good with mouse/kB so I never bothered but for immersion value its next on the list!

I bought a T flight hotas x joystick my old logitech extreme pro throttle was just not cutting it. Now if only I can figure out a better way to setup my hotas so they are more comfortable to use for 4 hour game sessions hehe.

ED has forced me to....

...lose weight.

No, seriously. I stopped snacking. I'm in the cockpit most of the day. I even skipped lunch on weekends sometimes. Have lost almost 2kg so far :p
