News Important Community Update

If ya manage to squeeze in enhancements and depth to the smuggling profession, then I promise to try to maybe forgive you for the delays! Ya got a career that fits the world of Elite perfectly and doesn't necessarily require a complete overhaul (it doesn't need what Exploration or Mining is getting, for example), smuggling just needs some love and focus for a teensy eensy bit.

Looking forward to anything new to do with Elite, and I do thank you for the communication. From reading Reddit and here and watching loads of Elite-centric videos made by players, I feel like a significant chunk of the playerbase is getting itchy, and the announced delay for carriers and ice planet visual upgrades may make them itchier, so I hope that juicy info tidbits can be doled out steadily in the near future for everyone to dream about as we wait.

I'll give you guys 50 bucks for a dang "Scandalous Rogues" update that bumps up smuggling and piracy though! Anything that fleshes those out more!

As part of pre-production, the team investigate all areas of the content and scope them out thoroughly. It’s important to take the time to be clear on what the vision for this is and how we imagine the content working. During this process, we have made a decision to adjust the focus of content that were previously planned for the Chapter Four update, adding some significant new gameplay, but it also means some other aspects will have to change. This means that some elements of content such as Ice Planets (which many of you will have seen some fantastic progress updates from LaveCon earlier this year) and Fleet Carriers for squadrons will not be coming as part of the Beyond – Chapter Four update. Some of the technology from the ice planets specifically will be used within our wider and global visual upgrade, so there will still be general improvements, but not everything we originally envisaged. However, we wanted you to be aware that these two elements specifically would be reprioritised out of the upcoming Beyond - Chapter Four update. What this does mean is that the rest of the content will be able to benefit for the changes in scheduling through deeper and richer gameplay mechanics.

Hi Zac, thanks for the update, I have no issues with these changes whatsoever. Sounds like the changes will benefit all players, solo and open. [up]

Now, if you could throw in a medium-sized Imperial exploration vessel - along with a couple of Dyson Spheres, that would be the icing on the cake. ;)

Zac, appreciate the update. BTW, just about ALL of us are still hoping for a Hula girl bobblehead. Just thought I'd mention it on behalf of all of us hoping for a hula girl bobblehead).

Now, tease us a bit, if you would be so kind, just to start the speculation train rolling down the tracks for another 20 threads:

You've already used "Horizons" and "Beyond" (meaning beyond horizons).
What name will be used for the updates in 2019? Just so we can all speculate, of course. [squeeeee]

While it's nice Zac has said something, without actually saying much to be fair, i'm more interested in will all the long standing bugs that have been reported basically since launch, finally be fixed? It 's like the bug reporting forum isn't shown to the devs tbh

Even GTA has got it according to Google!

FD announced that Q2+3 would be small content updates . They delivered what they promised.

As for Q4, yes they probably did over commit and now have to reprioritize. For some reason, they've also chosen to start full production work on Space Legs and Atmospheric Plantary Landings , sorry ;) , I mean the next major paid for updates to Elite Dangerous, which as a consequence means some Q4 had to be shelved.

Ultimately, improvements to Ice Planets was cosmetic, adding little in the way to game play.

Other planetary improvements, such as lighting will still make it into Q4.

In other words Frontier of overstretched themselves. Not only did they give us two fairly weak updates in regards to the Q2+3 in order to apportion more time to Q4 development, that apparently was enough.

Regarding the LTP content: that's a really poor response to say that those people that paid upfront a number of years ago and patiently waited a year will receive exactly nothing this year.

Personally I *don't* begrudge players with Horizons passes an additional free season of content, but it certainly makes us LTP'ers look a little foolish.

Ice planet update pushed back is unfortunate, that had promise to look gorgeous. Still looking forward to the exploration updates the most.

I never did understand what people were supposed to do with fleet carriers? Where would they go, who would they fight? Was in only meant for PVP since there are no incentives to fighting the Thargoid atm. Why even release new Guardian fighters that lack in DPS and kill themselves by overheating and don't have a real use, again, since it's pointless to fight the goids.

Any news on turning the base gameplay loop into a pleasant experience by re-doing the GUI? Eg. stop making ship fitting the player's worst enemy and remove a few dozen unnecessary clicks and create loadouts for different "professions". Maybe add a search?
Any news on creating an actual economy? Maybe let players sell raw materials and data too? Would be a welcome change if you could farm mats on some days and farm credits the other and buy some mats. Nothing clips your wings faster than noticing you're missing some grueling material grind from a certain recipe.

Maybe turn CQC into a battle royale as well. It has potential for pretty quick looping combat, if it can handle more than a few players at once.
Just make the game Free to Play and sell cosmetics? I'm fine with that. People seem to be buying them a lot and they do bring some colour into the game, if you do play with friends. Though, multiplayer isn't really incentivised either, so there's that...even player meet-ups lag like mad and kick people out. Not really thrilling gameplay.

If you wish to be "transparent", list more bug fixes in patch notes, so people know if they can return to doing something that was previously broken or unbalanced.

Yes, I'm super-critical, but I really do love the base game. It's just awful to do most things in the game due to repetition or just lack of depth. Can't really dedicate myself into doing anything.
Graphics are gorgeous, audio is awesome, base flying experience is mostly fantastic, but where's QA and missions design? Where's listening to the community as a regular thing?
Commanders plug the game to the outside like crazy and the community is super welcoming to newbies, but they really do deserve some transparency on the forums as a reward.

Thanks for the update, much appreciated.

Not the news players wanted clearly, now taking away content is added fuel the fire. Unless Q4 brings atmos: landings, Proper quality mining, and exploring and a BONANZA EVENT then ED is pretty much becoming a poor lost cause...

Ok so these bits stood out to me (I shall add my own emphasis)

We do have one exciting piece of news to share that to date, we have not shared with our community. A while ago, our development went from pre-production into full production on our next major milestone of Elite development.

Is there any real reason you can't say what that is concidering it is now in Full production?

What that means in the simplest terms is that the team are actively working on the next major landmark which takes us into our next era for Elite. We aren’t going to be ready to talk about or announce any details for quite a while yet, it is early in the development and there is still a long way to go, but I can say that this is something that will be scheduled to release a considerable time after the final update in the Beyond series. We will have more details on exactly what this means and how the era will roll out after the release of Beyond – Chapter Four, but this does mark some exciting next steps and a continued commitment to the long term vision for the game and our community.

So ... no new preimium content for a long time, maybe a year or more?

Using words like "a considerable time" doesn't bode well.
