David Braben comments on VR [gamedaily.biz article]

It's also divisive and thereby not suited for families, you see. AR is much better. Think of building up your own dino park in your garden! That would be fun! Who needs simulations anyway.

Even War Thunder has VR, and DCS of course.

My wife is expecting our 3rd child... :) While it is certainly appears not to be for families, to me it seems it seals off gaming time from family time. My rig was moved with VR to a dedicated area, not anymore in the living room, no more of "just checking something", or "just 20 mins of quick gameplay", VR gaming firmly falls into the kids-are-sleeping/away parts of the day.

I'm not sure what you're getting at re marketing departments, VR is very much being driven from the ground up by indie developers, enthusiasts and the community. Even the tech itself only came about now because of crowd funding and the passion of a few people. Large companies by and large have ignored VR, with the exception of a few nibbles here and there and some trail blazers like Bethesda and, to a lesser extent, Frontier. Though even then they've hardly thrown their full weight behind it and tried to convince people they should want it. Actual marketing around VR is noticeably absent for the most part. Even the few big hardware partners involved like HTC, Valve and Sony (for the PSVR) do almost no marketing of the devices. Also to be clear, have you actually tried it? Because if not I can't see how you could justify such a hard position. As for the cost, well it's not cheap obviously but if you can afford a reasonable gaming PC then you can afford to add VR to it. Also there are other potential benefits to VR, personally I can justify the cost for the health benefits alone. But that's a whole other discussion. But it really is one of those things you have to try to understand. I'd encourage anyone with doubts to find their nearest VR arcade and go give it a try.
To be clear, once again,Never have and almost certainly never will.(Not an argument,fact.)...Re marketing dept.Pretty basic and (intentionally?) inept.Slot mobile phone into cardboard box and strap to face. And the fact that the 'heavy hitters' have not put much effort into it is probably down to the fact that it's such a tough sell, and they're all waiting for the enthusiasts to crack the problem for them,at which point they will most likely swoop in and garner the rewards.(opinion)As for the cost, the day i allow a peripheral to dictate my computing needs...lol.Its a closed system and i don't need terrabytes .

That's your problem, no

and to not even be curious, I mean, that's just meh. Even when VR costs 100 notes and looks like a pair of sunglasses you still won't be interested. I'm so glad I'm not you.

No idea what that "slot mobile phone into cardboard box" nonsense is or what "terrabytes" have to do with anything.... Really just shows how little you actually know about the subject you are attempting to participate in.

Each to thier own and all that but I have no idea why you want to write such dribble here in the VR sub forum. VR not for you? Fine move along, we don't care or really need to know, particularly when your reasoning / opinions come down to foil hat tomfoolery which makes no sense to anyone other than yourself.

o.k.the penny's dropped as far as the subforums issue goes, was responding to op, apologies ,didnt intend to muss up the clubhouse .

You know I have to say, it takes a lot to get me angry (I teach four year olds), but this just feels like such a slap in the face! ED VR is my hobby, my “me” time and the Journey from DK1 right through to Samsung Odyssey and hopefully to Pimax and CV2 is one I was truly excited about. I kinda knew that DB’s been cheating on me with a hussy PS4 and cheap Xbox from down the road, but to find out he never really cared in the first place is hard to take! Lol
First world problems I know, but cmon, Elite Dangerous Without VR... it’s like ... it’s like... well it’s just stupid! So there! :)

Might explain the lack of any real progress on the VR implementation in Elite for some time now.... VR is the only thing that keeps me playing this title, I wouldn't go near it in 2D. Then again, I don't really play anything outside of VR anymore.

Elite is still pretty much the gold standard VR seated experience, even after five years... I can't really think of anything they'd have to actually add to the experience.

I think Braben is being typically pragmatic. These ARE issues that VR has for many players.

I can play 6 hours on my oculus and merely suffer a bit of itchiness as one does with, for example elastic around a pair of tight socks.

I've never suffered at 3D movies, even the older Anaglygh red and blue glasses in the "Olden days" and the Oculus Rift is very comfortable.

Not even close to DCS' VR support which is ongoing. Elite doesn't even allow the physics to be exported.

Agreed. And I'd rather have David Braben pragmatism over Sean Murray overenthusiasm.

Stop being so reasonable! ;)
EDVR is/was a glimpse into the future of gaming... like seeing Lionel Messi playing football at ten years old! Maybe some people just saw a talented young boy, but many would’ve known he was going to be special! Maybe EDVR doesn’t have all of the dots connected right now but there are enough to see the bigger picture! I’m just shocked DB isn’t seeing what I’m seeing, given he is half of ELITE. It was my childhood being brought to life in VR, but it was his vision.

I'll be curious to see what he thinks when he tries one of the new 200+degree FOV headsets coming out :D

I can run VR with ED, I have a Vive, but when it comes to competition level of playing (PvP tournaments, Thargoid content) I don't use the VR and go back to the monitor.

The resolution just isn't high enough yet on my Vive, whereas I can get crystal clear, easy to read 144hz on my monitor. For immersion it's great, but for the Top Tier of gameplay it's not up to task. (my 1070 can't run ED:VR at 144hz)

Might change with the 2k per eye VR headsets though and the new 20 series GPU's

The res is fine and perfectly adequate for even DCS. The idea that you’re involved in Top Tier gameplay is laughable
