Fallout 76 Announced - Are you in?

Since it sounds so pointless, why even allow it in the first place? Is it to keep the Fortnite and PUBG crowd happy?

Probably. Or to keep them away. The point of Fallout 76 is cooperation. I don't think that's something Fortnite kids would even wrap their heads around of.

Attempting to survive against the wilderness, with friends or pubbies, sounds like fun. Something clearly missing from many of the supposed zombie survival games where the zombies were the least threatening things out there.

A world populated by mutant beasties thay may attack your little settlement at any time sounds rather appealing. If there was a PvP flag you could set or clear you could sign me up now.

Well, that's just the thing. All previous survival game simply turned into a "Battle Royale", some by design, some not. Bethesda is trying to do something different here, so they have my vote.
And this concept of PvP "being possible, but discouraged/disabled by default" is a good one, methinks.
The thing is, that some people simply WILL want to try their metal against other people, of course, so they couldn't make the game completely without this possibility, but it's not the game's focus.

You can still ransack their camps, btw. ;)

Have you watched their video on how to prevent griefing? I guess you didn't.
They have, in my opinion, the most awesome mechanic anyone ever invented. I quite look forward to being griefed. ;)

I suppose you're not gonna watch it, so here's the rundown:

1) The amount of damage you can innitially do to another player is minimal (so no surprise headshots, no OP shotgun in a face of AFK player,...)
2) The attacked player can accept the duel and then it's fair and square 1v1
3) The attacked player can REFUSE the duel and then they will keep being damaged only slightly by any consecutive attack.
4) You can eventually kill them (by little bug bites that will cost you a lot of money for expensive ammunition) and if you do, the only loot you will get from them are crafting resources they've gathered in the last session. They can happily respawn wherever they want and keep all their gear, etc.
5) You now have a big ol' bounty on your head. You no longer can see players on your minimap, so unless you accidentally run into somebody, you won't find anyone. And on the other hand you are now shown as a big target to EVERYBODY. So bounty hunters will be closing in and you WON'T see them coming. They are free to kill you and loot you and your bounty that they're gonna get will be deducted from YOUR account.

The bottom line is - non-con combat is discouraged and WILL ruin your day. :)

Players are players. It won't be long and a meta will be found to alleviate the "awesome mechanic" - until then count on brute force gang ganks and fatman spam. Also - if you can't get the player - go for the sandcastle - it's gonna annoy just as well - especially when you'll have to overcome the "awesome mechanic" to protect your stuff, lol.

I am sure you're going to be a blast to meet in the game.

I'm skeptical as well, but I'm not writing it off before I play it.

It's the first Bethesda game in a long time that may not be a day-one purchase for me, though. I play their games for the solo experience, for the modding, and because I love how they do open worlds. 76 will have the open world part down I'm sure, but without those other pillars.... I just don't know.

Really curious to see how it mutates when we do get the mod support and private servers. Along with a few years of continual updates.

You could really make some interesting variants.

Sounds like a crap idea from Bethesda to cash in on the MP games.

Well they've been experimenting with multiplayer for a long time, so it's not a surprise they'd eventually release something. Also this isn't even the main studio afaik - it's the old Battlecry Studios at the helm. I think Bethesda Softworks is still busy with Starfield and pre-production on TES6.

If I understand it correctly, F76 (or at least the base code and ideas) was originally planned to be a part of Fallout 4 MP mode, but it was scrubbed, because it would delay the release by at least a year, so they cut it out, reimagined and improved and are now releasing it as kind of a side project.

Yes, I don't think it will get as much attention as other, "real" Bethesda games, but it DOES sound like fun.
