Powerplay Kill it.

Wow.... never thought I'd see the day Martin said to kill it. I had thought he'd been assimilated and was one with Mahon PP by now, just a memory of his human self and merely a data mashup of spreadsheets, programs, and Elite. ;) Kidding aside, I do respectfully disagree on the Kill it part...

I've got over 3k hours in this game myself over two years across the XB1 and PC. I've helped lead Hudson to where he's at now with the help of a tremendous leadership team. We've faced immense opposition in 5c and constant exploits that has worn on our player base. Even over this continuous abuse of the game by other players against us (and against other powers) we've stood steadfast against allowing our players to utilize the same exploits and have never, and will never entertain those thoughts.

We've stood by and helped other powers to combat 5c, and always held out hope about changes and fixes would be on the way. The open-only discussion, the acknowledgment of bots and other exploits like 'turret boats' and promises of fixes. Direct discussions with Sandro by us in 'leadership' of the powers. All suddenly gone and hope is fading fast.

What happened? I had to stop playing, even stepped away for a few months multiple times lately, to the point I avoided the game, discord, Reddit, and here. All to the detriment of some of the communities I helped to grow and shape. Hudson PP endured on with a great leadership team without missing a beat thankfully, the EliteCG Reddit suffered for a little bit, but fortunately I had brought in some additional mods there that quickly took up the reigns and kept the community growing and engaged. (I had grown that from about 1500 users to over 9k now.)

PP NEEDS to change; it NEEDS to be either significantly improved or completely revamped. If you take away any biases and look at it from the outside, it was one of the ONLY aspects of the game where it was indeed a fully immersive and player-driven narrative. Yes, there were occasional stories in Galnet about the powers, but nothing that affected the layout and structure of the universe. There were 10 (and eventually 11) groups that were run by players, that were commanded by players, whose actions (defensive and offensive) were decided by players. All the changes within the powers were the result of player actions.

We theorized, tested, and implemented strategies that affected Powerplay actions, learning the most efficient methods, developed scouting plans and attack strategies to counter those, we researched and coordinated BGS with even non-PP PMF's and helped to build and grow that aspect of the game (the alliance the most in that regard as they were indeed a mishmash of PMFs). The only other aspect of the game that is even close regarding a player-driven activity is BGS. PP involved BGS, trading, exploration, behind the scenes number crunching, massive logistical challenges to bring players together into our communities without any in-game tools to communicate widely or to recruit. We utilized BGS, expanded interest and stories by submitting Galnet articles and CGs, and creating PMFs. PP involves combat, trading (running trades to make credits on the return trips from fortifications). Trading, combat, exploration, passenger hauling, etc. ALL were utilized to advance BGS strategies to strengthen our powers. There is NO other aspect of the game that allows player groups the options that PP did. BGS is the closest, with PP being a much larger scale with additional elements added in.

PP had that potential at being the most crucial aspect of the game, the one that players could truly join a group and play as any number of roles and contribute to a larger goal. It was flawed, but if it had been given the attention and resources to be developed, changed, and updated from the start, would be the shining star of this game. Instead, it's the ugly red-headed (sorry to the red-heads out there) step-child, being viewed by anyone outside our communities as a pointless grind fest.

FDev needs to stop, take a step back, and realize the potential of what they have here (maybe that's what they're doing, and some massive overhaul is coming (I can dream can't I? I am an eternal optimist after all)). Fix it, change it, make it live up to the potential it has. Just COMMUNICATE with us about it! On the Powerplay/Leader discord as well as let the public discussions be seen out here on the forums as well.

Please, don't let PP die, 5c is devastating powers, having almost killed off participation entirely in a few already. Step up FDev, see the goldmine you have here, commit to improvements and a massive revitalization and overhaul of PP!

I want to hug you.

I'm gone for three months and my first post back gets me a hug from Rubbernuke?!

Sadly... That post will not be seen by 99% of the members on these forums :(

Well, we will know. And with some luck Sandro will have his forum privileges given back and be allowed to talk to us again.

So, I've decided to give up on PP. As with so much in ED, it comes down to a simple logic for me. There is just NOT ENOUGH IN GAME RESOURCES to make it work - like so much.

It is the over reliance on external third party communities, reddit, discord, blah blah and blog sphere that really cheese me off. Its just not my bag. I want to be involved IN THE GAME, not playing the game as a supplement to a community that communicates almost entirely on third party apps. Maybe I'm old school, or just too old. Yeah I know WHY this happens and the 5c stuff is a big part of it for sure but unless ED manage to crack this over reliance on external resource for almost EVERY ASPECT OF THE GAME, ED will never be the game it was meant to be, or could be.

As an EXAMPLE and Im sure I am not the first: When I log on to my powers page, I get a management and activities section where I can receive commands from 'Mahon HQ" on what to do, where to do it, how to do it - what are the aims, what are we doing and why? When I log onto the game I can automatically get a list of players current on-line that are part of my power, where they are and if they currently engaged in Powerplay activity. Likewise I can get a list of hostile power agents that are currently active in Mahon systems, and a beacon hit to track their location and intercept if required. IN short - the entire system should be run from INSIDE the game not outside it, and there should be some 'active direction' by the game itself.

Of course the minutae can be worked around: how goals are decide, how votes are cast and actions rewarded.

5c stuff will always be hard to manage, but a track record of individual players achievements that can be viewed by all other power members would enable tracking of a pattern of behaviour.

So no - for me the answer is no, not for now. Maybe if they ever decide to resurrect it with any real devotion to making it work inside the game - but I'll be resigning my power today.

Because of its nature PP is a feature of E:D that could keep the most players playing long term. Don't understand why they don't give it all the love in the world.

what strikes me most is that even after seeing such a vocal thread by a die hard cmdr as per OP, not even a single post from fdev.

shame on you frontier.

Well there was only ever one dev who wanted to improve PP, but Sandro has been absent from the forums for a while. The rest? Who knows. We got a 'thanks for the chat' from Will and then tumbleweed.

If it had the missions displayed on the trailer (we all know the one ;) ) it would be pretty epic! as well as miscellaneous activities that aren't all combat based (add a flippin 'espionage scanner' pop in system, scan planets and boom...merits, have a week cooldown on scans so you can re-do systems. and that was just an exploration style, non-combat example)

There are a heap of ways this could be roped into being a viable aspect. anouther could be add variable unique modules (size 1 imperial hammers, gimballed/turreted size 2-4 retributors/ enforcers).

here is my guess: after the salt storm following Sandro’s open only proposal he has been ordered not to interact anymore with the community until they deploy q4.

The OP has listed many reasons why i have stopped participating in powerplay more than a year ago.
Additionally it has caused a lot of problems between playergroups and factions for...what?
Hauling merrits, getting no money and just some numbers on the screen? Because this is what powerplay is.

In my opinion we can clearly scrap powerplay completely without any problems :D

If I had my way, PMFs could collapse as well though. PMFs and the way they are introduced into the galaxy is just as bad.

you mean the devs that wasted a whole season chapter on powerplay, which you now consider should be scrapped? interesting logic!

It wasn't wasted. I and many others have found outstanding communities because of it and we even enjoyed it from time to time. We still enjoy it, sometimes. The waste is not revisiting it.

of course 'wasted' was subjective and just nitpicking wording. i was just pointing out a stranger contradicting himself on the internet. such is my boredom today, sorry! i totally agree the issues of what frontier started with likely best intentions are worth to be addressed so that those communities keep thriving.

ED needs emergent content; Powerplay should and can provide this.

it indeed could and should. powerplay with something along the lines of the proposed pp-open-only changes and some networking revamp could be a complete game changer, with little to no impact to players currently not interested in that kind of content. i myself would probably engage.

Q4: SpaceBinoculars

don't get that, but it's awkward to ask for jokes to be explained ... :D
