Flipped Off :: Tales from the Mission Boards.

Dear fellow CMDRs,

I recently flipped into Solo to find a preferable mission to save some time and, well play my own way (I know, awful of me).

I needed some Neo-fabric Insulation for a weapon unlock, I'd already been grinding for 1/2 a day or so.

The mission I had been offered was, 'Massacre 81 ships in a combat zone', (maybe another 3 to 4 hours for a fairly average pilot as myself).

Upon flipping to solo, I found the mats. I needed with a, 'Salvage Black Box' mission, pretty quick and simple.

I wonder if other CMDRs in the 2.8% (this should be a pretty quiet thread!), have similar experiences - where Board Flipping has saved them literally hours in-game or allowed them to do the type of mission they prefer?

I still don't understand why FD think that putting the missions on a separate server will prevent you from doing that or, more to the point, wishing to do that.

Unless they have in mind a completely overhauled missions system also :)

There is no overhaul Lightspeed.

Currently each server you join via the different game modes serves up different missions.

When a dedicated mission server is used, the board will not change when you change modes.

So it won't remove the need (or desire) to swap, just the ability to do so. OK got it +1.

So they will need to overhaul the mission boards then - big time, because there's going to be a lot of complaints.

No, they are going to reduce the board's refresh rate from 15 mins to 10 mins, and increase payouts by 10% (with the caveat that balance/mission at any time applies).
No plan to add more missions.

Recent statements indicate that they think the mission board is basically fine as it is, maybe with slightly less wing missions. They also made it quite clear that things like credit payout-range or mission variety are quite deliberate. I really don't see any light on the horizon regarding the problems with mission boards or missions in general. Franky, I'm still amazed this wasn't even on their agenda for the "Beyond core gameplay improvements".

I've thought about starting over with a new commander next week, but given these changes I feel like I shouldn't.

Chances are, I'll travel 10.000 ls to a station with my Viper and are given mining missions or wing cargo delivery missions only. Not fun. Waste of time.

This will be our reality with Frontier's track record designing this stuff.

Welcome to the team!

And yeah, this is exactly why people flip: TO get the reward they want, or to fill the ship with missions to the same locations, GIVING a purpose to large (and expensive) ships asides normal trade.

If you think how many times new missions have been added with bugs, or goldrushes in the edge case systems, for 'fine as it is' READ, we daren't touch the code it's a big pile of spaghetti and we won't do a rewrite.

What's especially ironic is that there's currently no linkage between modes and missions.

The example given in the OP could just as easily have been a ludicrously tedious wing mission offered in Solo, replaced by a simple salvage operation in Open.

And that's nuts.

Unless a wing board is created, players in solo are now forevermore going to see loads of wing missions, *bites knucle* INFURIATING.

Well, today, and it isn't the first time this has happened, I log in and check the acropolis mission board. All they want is for me to find tea, and grain and clothes. Apparently they are a factory discount carrier now that the thargoids have been defeated.

I was approaching at the Vanguard in an AX-combat ship in the hope for some interceptor missions, preferably basilisk and medusa since i'd like to increase my skills more and more.
All that i've found were ressource missions. You know...find that and bring it to us.....
Sooo....i've did some board flipping upon the modes until i've finally got 3 missions for interceptors. 2 cyclops 1 basilisk.

I'm 2.8% too

I'd like to know what they are hoping to achieve by stopping board flipping
Because at the end of the day the players are trying to earn enough credits to kit out their ships it just seems to me FD are trying to make that take as long as possible

The wild disparity in missions is exactly why board flipping exists. You have a board full of massacre missions in one mode, flip, a bunch of cargo hauls... flip... a bunch of donation missions... flip... a bunch of salvage, regardless of state, government or economy.

What really needs to happen is that Government Type, Economy and State need to have a much stronger impact on the type of mission generated. That way, players need to apply logic to determine where the best places to do missions of a particular type are, and need to move about if they want to do missions of a specific type constantly. More detail here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...s-on-the-BGS?p=6998411&viewfull=1#post6998411

But short version... the way the system should work is if you go to a Dictatorship in Civil Unrest (regardless of economy), there should be a whole bunch of Assasination/Massacre missions, but don't be surprised when there's zero of anything else... conversely, a democratic faction in election should be offering a bunch of missions to courier poll data, take donations and (perhaps) spy on the enemy with surface scan installations, but there shouldn't be any sign of missions to kill political opponents.

EDIT: And to compare apples to apples, a democratic faction in Civil Unrest, unlike the Dictatorship, should be sourcing nonlethal weapons, reactive armour etc., salvaging "Rebel Transmissions" and rescuing hostages.

Because at the end of the day the players are trying to earn enough credits to kit out their ships it just seems to me FD are trying to make that take as long as possible

Quite possibly, FD *think* it's all about credits, and not about players simply wanting to come on and play the game doing an activity they enjoy, like Lucius' post.
