Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Ive only unlocked two parts so far...a ramp and a speed boosting strip...no more options left to unlock cos Ive already unlocked every blueprint there is weeks ago. Its enough to create something, maybe not a full race track but certainly a slipway off the exo pad and a short jump over a ravine...(I placed the pad on an island)
Sounds about right. I have the ramp and boost as well, but not starter.

I never played this pre Next so Im not sure if there is anything else to unlock...I live in hope there is.
The only things I'm missing from old version is race initiator, the standing planter that produced carbon, and the garage door. Not sure why they're gone.

Tried placing my landing pad underwater and it does work, but it just doesnt connect with the design of the base itself and Im loathe to just plonk it down unconnected...just doesnt feel right so went the other way and built it into the base itself which is largely above the water until I can work out a better solution. I like my bases to make sense so I always have everything connected in some way or another and always build foundations as opposed to just leaving them as individual parts.
We need submarines and proper airlock rooms for entry and exit to water.

Draw bridge would be very cool, especially if built into a sorta hangar fer the exocraft as opposed to leaving them outside. The mechanic could then mechanic while the gardener does his gardening...even though I do most the farming in the freighter cos the hydroponics dont use fuel in the freighter and never need recharged. Its more fer convenience as its less too ing and fro ing when crops are ready.

I know I could just use biodomes, but tbh I just use biodomes as decorations that look cool and give ye a dozen graviton balls or pearls...I dont farm those as they just more hassle than they worth and simply leave them fer whoever wants them...thats assuming I get visitors at all. The practical aspect, I do on the freighter where I also have a medium and large refiner and a market interface ^
Yup. Those are good ways of doing it. I built a small base on my freighter at first, but later when I switched up to a larger freighter and learned that it doesn't move the things or materials to the new one, all lost, I decided to build on planet -- for now.

My favorite screenshot so far. Calling this one "The jaws of ATLAS":

Separately, I finally found a base-worthy planet in an uncharted system. So many parts to build, it's crazy.

Ive heard mention of the old carbon planters, but have yet to actually see one...if its been removed from the game, then thats a shame cos carbon is pretty much one the most common resources that ye will always need.

Which reminds me...a better solution to storage would be nice to have. I really only use two ships, an S class fighter and an exotic explorer and I have 4 haulers which I use fer storage, and thats pretty much all I use them for. Despite being a mix of S and A class, I just cant find a use fer them beyond being glorified pack mules. And unlike many others it seems, I dont use the Hud view...old Freelancer fan here I use third person view.

Id actually forgotten about stuff vanishing when ye changed freighters...haha thats what I get fer making smart decisions when Im sober. I sorta figured that its gonna be a time yet before I change freighter anyway...I know the one I want cos Ive seen it before, but only once and not since. Back when it was more money than I had access to obviously...I wont touch anything else and this thing cost 145m. I keep blowing my cash on better ships I merely like the look of, keep them fer a few days before finding something even better and starting all over again.

The problem being theres too many distractions and I find it hard focusing on one particular aspect...the joys of adhd in a video game. I know I could make hundreds of millions if I put my mind to it, then find another fun planet and spend the rest of the night just messing around and achieving nothingor worse, waking up the next day to find Id died shortly after I dozed off, and spent the next 5 minutes frantically looking fer the grave site cos I hadnt saved in ages.

Gets funny when ye find yer grave in an underground cavern dead end...which is also under the ocean which ye just have to laugh at yer own antics that ye only vaguely remember. That recovery was funny cos I actually died again when I jumped into the buggy to go get it and ran outta fuel with an empty mining gun trying to get to the original grave site.

Even funnier when Im thinking about starting an ironman account...somehow I just dont see that working fer me ^

True. But with the refinery, it's not far away to get bunches of it. I think any of the plants converts to carbon, so if you have stockpile of say the mushrooms, just run them in the refinery.

I miss the carbon walls though, because they were kind'a decorative.

Yup. And I have a bunch of large refineries constructed just to store stuff. Pack in things in the three input slots and they stay there.

Sub-title for NMS is: What the f- was I doing again?

You easily get sidetracked with 50 other things than the thing that you moments ago considered the most important thing to do.

Or grave (personal, not ship-grave) in space after falling through the rafters in the freighter. :D

Walking on frigates is funny...the laws of gravity are just hilarious when yer walking upside down and falling when yer upright. I dont do it anymore...it makes my brain hurt ^

Speaking of bases, Ive run into a base breaking issue. It was built yesterday, but today after making one small change to accomodate a second landing pad, it wont let me rebuild what I deleted to make it fit. Ive even tried going back to the way it was but it wont even let me do that and I literally cant even place a floor tile with hearing about it being an invalid position...when it really shouldnt be.

Im really not understanding the issue...yesterday no issues...today multiple issues. Spent the past few hours play trying to figure it out and nothing...deleted right back to the first building which destroyed well over ten hours work and still, cannot rebuild at all from any starting point. Anything I attempt to place, invalid position...even when the base has been gutted to try and figure out what the problem is.

Thats the most annoyed Ive been with NMS so far considering the amount of work that now turns out to be a complete and utter waste of time with zero explanation as to why.

So...time to unpack and delete everything and start looking fer a new planet...again ^

Oh dear. I still can't figure out how to make my next jump and plot my route correctly, so even though I already jumped a few times and have the required core, I am sort of stuck at the beginning of the Atlas Path. No idea how to plot that route.

A question: The credits you need for a base or freighter are of course quite a lot.
Would you say it is grindy? Or are credits only a challenge at the beginning?

Its only a challenge fer the first couple of hours and while it can be grindy, its nowhere near as bad as many other games I can think of because ye can see yer progress and gauge it from that. The rewards are not drip fed in NMS although it will feel grindy at first...once ye start upgrading yer multitool, the grind becomes much less so.

If yer unfortunate enough to have started on a hostile planet, then yer only priority should be to get off the ground asap cos that will get grindy if ye hang around long enough. Once ye have yer first freighter and start populating yer base with aliens, then thats a bit grindy yes, but once done, never have to be repeated. After 20 to 30 hours, the grind is all but a memory truth be told.

When in the map, cycle through yer options as it will automatically select the fastest route to whatever mission ye were on when ye loaded the map. Go to free explore if ye just wanna explore...freely...ye get the picture. Also worth bearing in mind that ye will only be able to jump to basic systems unless ye have the different drives to access the rare star classes...the map will still have ye selecting systems ye cant jump to but will tell ye what drive ye need in the bottom left corner.

If yer looking fer specific economies and states of hostilty, then build an economy scanner and hostility scanner. Not all systems will have all ships or resources...Gek systems will do trade ships, Vykeen will have fighters and Korvax will have explorers. Of course, they all have a mix, but if ye after specific ships, then thats as good a guide as any ^

Just a couple of guys mucking about trying to find how high you can build a base.
Few hours just getting up there, calling it a night after finding it out you can't build any higher because the base is too far away.
You can almost touch the freighter, almost. Take off from a landing pad and you DO touch it, unintentionally.

That's the annoying thing with base building, so many things won't connect, and you can't build everything on top on plates, and occasional the problem you're having that something is in an invalid position. I try to find ways around it when encountered, and report it as a bug with pictures to Hello Games.

Yes. It's grindy but it gets easier and easier, I'm at the point where I have more than I ever need. But it is hard at first. Looking back, at least I feel the work was rewarded.
