Playing other games for 2 weeks

Different even from Origins? I'm intrigued...Steam downloading it now whilst I make my long suffering wife some tea and toast for our 31st anniversary...little does she know she just bought me a present :D
Congrats, may you live long enough to finish Odyssey after she finds out. :p

The best example I can come up with ...

The story, world size and scale and beauty of Origins (without the performance issues; though my i5 6600, GTX 1080, 16GB RAM PC can't do a solid 60FPS on Ultra.. so I locked it to 31FPS and it's happy).
The ship sailing and ship combat of Black Flag.
With the RPG elements of Mass Effect (character customisation (gear and weapons, not physical), and important decision making).

This is an Assassin's Creed on a whole other level.

This is just my opinion of course; some people will like it; other's won't. YMMV.
I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience so far (I play it on Exploration mode* with Nightmare difficulty).
I chose Kassandra and it only took an hour to fall for her attitude, looks and accent, [haha]

* Two game modes, Guided and Exploration. Guided shows you where to go for most missions; Exploration makes you search for it (this is a great feature as it encourages reading, listening and exploring).

The only thing that didn't gel for me playing Origins was the new 'press Y button to dodge' combat mechanic...I loved the old combat style a la Black Flag (which I still play regularly) so the new style, although I understand the whole RPG focus, just seems a bit arcadey to me. I tended to just hide in the bushes and fire darts at the NPC's rather than get the sword out.

All in all though, I'm like you in being a bit of an AC fanboi...I have the rest of them too :)

You jest, but I've always thought it's better to treat Elite as a toy, not a game. You play with it in whatever way gives you the most satisfaction.

Stop giggling at the back.

(why does 's n i g g e r i n g' get auto-edited to 'sing'?)

Because of the naughty word in the word. Yes, the net nanny is strong on this forum. Never mind the fact that totally legit forum polls has placed this community in the 25+ year old range.
Anyway; that's the reason, it contains a naughty word in the word.

I must admit...playing AC Odyssey and I'm completely hooked. All my favourite bits from Black Flag mixed with an utterly compelling setting spread over the entire Aegean sea. Ubisoft done good this time [yesnod]

Especially loving the new 'discovery' mode where the game doesn't show waypoint markers to quests on the HUD, leaving you to go and explore to find them with a few vague directions from the quest giver...

I even got to visit Thermopylae as it was over 2000 years ago, about 50 years or so after the battle in 480 BCE. I visited the battle site quite a few years ago on a biker trip with some army mates but the sea has retreated a few miles from the time of the battle so you don't get a true perspective on how it was.

Loved the historic inscription on the simple piece of red sandstone, brought all the way from Sparta after the later battle of Plataea had been won in 479 BCE to commemorate the sacrifice of Leonidas and his royal guard at Thermopylae.

'Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by.
That here, obedient to their laws we lie.'

In the game, you get to trace the route taken by the traitor Ephialtes, who led the Persians via a little known pass behind the Spartan front lines...and no, he wasn't a hunchback (thanks 300 for the Spartan propaganda image)...nor a Spartan. He was a Helot slave in service to the Spartans :p

Strangest thing was...I wasn't going to buy the game originally until NuttiKrust posted about it. I wrongly imagined Ubisoft would butcher the history to make the game...a history which I'm particularly keen on. Well, I'm always glad to be wrong and I'll give them the bit of artistic license they took in making it extremely playable...

Real glad I took your advice, mate... From my experience of all the others in the series with my favourite being Black Flag, this is the best Assassin's Creed to date by a country mile. :)

The combat in Odyssey is so enjoyable for me that I find I'm spending my points predominantly in the warrior tree. This is less Assassin's Creed and more like "I'm a bloody Spartan warrior woman in Ancient Greece, yo."

Really glad you are both enjoying it and satisfied with their recreation of ancient Greece (and surrounds). :D
I think Ubisoft have stumbled onto something grand, which is basically .. "make it historical, and make it huge, make it beautiful and make it as accurate as possible."
It worked in Origins (climbing Giza, and exploring tombs was so epic); it's definitely working in Odyssey.

I honestly thought that Ubisoft had lost the plot after Black flag...then Origins came along with them using the same game director from Black Flag. I can't believe how huge the game map is in Odyssey, I mean...the entire Aegean?

Just some fun numbers:

Assassin's Creed, Damascus: 0.13km²
Assassin's Creed: Origins: 80km²
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey: 130km² (not confirmed but calculated to be that big) .. or slightly smaller than Christmas Island.

Wow you guys are realy making me want to buy Odyssey.
I finished Origins four times with all dlc, loved it incredibly.

I'm playing Forza Horizon 4 on Xbox Gamepass ay the moment but I'm definitely not gonna buy it, I like Horizon 3 better.

Now to convince my wife into getting AC Osyssey :O

There are not many games I keep coming back to as reliably as to Elite.

The only other game that had me as addicted (or even more) was Mound&Blade: Warband (crpg mod)

Total-War series get's a honorable mention. And on console, well... I tend to play story driven games I can finish and gift away afterwards.

I took a break for a while and have been playing GTA V, NMS, Aces High etc. It made me appreciate Elite, it’s far from perfect but it’s still the best game on the market (my opinion).

Do you mean that it's the best game in it's class, or the best game on the market period? I love ED, but it doesn't even hold a candle to the genius of GTA V

I've played it for a few days now: brilliant. Too early to see how it stacks up with Origins, but I actually think I like it better right now.

Downloading now!
I realy like Origins and since Odyssey is in Ancient Greece I think I'll like it even more.
I like it that they brought naval combat into it from Black Flag, loved that one too.
We've got all AC titles so far, the first being the worst imho.

Another interesting twist is the war mechanics, which I just ran into a few minutes a go. My initial impression is that Odyssey is going to be a lot deeper than Origins.

I'm just a few hours in but already loving it.
I realy like the special abilities like the Kick.
Just killed the first bounty hunter only level five but it was a good fight.
You now need resources too in order to upgrade your weapons and stuff, I like that, I thought only money was a bit to easy in Origins.
I'm curious about the naval combat too, loved it in Black Flag.

27 hours played in Odyssey so far, and total progression is at 20%. Oh yeah. Tons more to do. :D

That's looking realy good!!
The world looks brilliant, I like it better already then Egypt which was a whole lot of desert but then again I like Greece in general, been there a couple times on vacation, Crete being one of the Islands and it's in the game too.
I'm in for quite some hours of fun, I was first reluctant to buy Odyssey, don't know why, but you guys turned me over, glad you did. :D
