FantastiCon - 16 August 2014, Hull

Hi Senator

Wonderful to here that again, and well worth staying up to hear your read it live.

Can't wait for the audio books to be released. I just can't find enough time to read fiction these days, so much to do, so little time in the day. But with a set of the audio books I can grind away in game while listening to the stories. Having listened to Chris and Allen talk about Chris's audio production techniques I just know they are going to be awesome.

And expect to be pestered the next time we both at a convention or meet up. I want my audio books signed in person with me present.

FantasiCon 2015

Dan, Gabi

I messaged Gabi on Google+ about FantasiCon 2015, did you get it? If your off taking a well earned break then don't worry about it. Just did want you to miss it 'cos I said I'd look after the LAN again (if you want me to of course).

I am interested to hear Kate's experience of the DK2 and her views on the technology. Has she given any anywhere?

Well for me I thought the immersion whilst looking around the cockpit was amazing and the stereo effects as well were great. But the pixel resolution was pants - I couldnt make out what the ship was I was firing at - it was just a load of blurred pixels. Because a lot of Elite Dangerous combat takes place with you firing at little dots that is a major downside IMO. So I wont be buying one.

I'm not aware of anything she has posted that goes into that much depth. But as it was my lappie and sticks she was using, and El_Tel's DK2. She did say after she had finished that it was awesome, incredible or words to that effect. Can't remember exactly because everyone was saying the same thing. Her time on it was ended by Dan turning up with a book for her to sign and her going back to her book signing duties.

I only know of two posts on Google+:

Being my first ever "non-work" con of any kind and not knowing anyone there (most of whom have met before) I was a little confused/overwhelmed at first, when it rolled around to a socially acceptable time for beer, that helped :)

It was a delight to meet you. :) My only regret is that I didn't quite manage to say hello [at the very least] to *everyone*!

If you are reading this and I missed you out somehow - I'll be trying again when I'm next at an event. Come and find me and say hello. :)

I'll make sure this is passed on cause it would definitely be very welcome :)

Well in that case, here's hoping I can make it too, then if you wish to set up a bit more "LAN", I can borrow a few bits from work and set up a router, to be plugged into the venues interweb somewhere, and a few switches, so that the LAN area is then isolated (and firewalled) from the venues connection, but will share it for access to the net, if that can be arranged (I can even restrict it's bandwidth if the venue are uneasy about the amount it may get used. A few more devices can then be used for alternate uses, I could possibly also set-up an event only wireless AP with code to be given out with name tags. (the channel for that will depend on what the venue uses so as not to conflict, but I can change that on the fly after a quick scan with a cool app I've got).

(that's 20 mins work for me what will I do the rest of the time LOL)

I hope you can make it too. Given that the game will be released by then there will be a whole load of new people coming too. I understand the DALEK is already booked for next year.

I would be quite glad if the same venue was used next year as this. It's location couldn't have been more convenient for those travelling by train - it has it's own entrance on the station - and there were a number of restaurants for meals within a very short walking distance. The only issue could be floor space. The two rooms we used were perfect given the number of delegates, but if the attendance list grows much then it would become an issue. However, the hotel has a number of other conference suites so we could expand.

The LAN issue was two fold. First the hotel's broadband link was not really up to the task of a LAN party. I understand that they have a budget to upgrade within the next few months (before next years event). The second was the LAN's room connectivity, network over the electrical power circuits also does cut it. Next year I want to run cable where I can and run a dedicated WiFi bridge where running cable can't be done for health and safety reasons.

So long as Dan and Gabi get me involved early enough I will make sure this happens by talking to the necessary people at the hotel.

This would be awesome - Dan passes on his immense appreciation! Consider yourself and Bikky signed up as official FantastiCon IT Wizzards ;)

OMG, just found out why I'd not seen anything about pre-regsitering.

just gone through my last 2 months of possible spam filtering and there was an email from Darren Grey with all the details.

LOL really, should check it more often

As a former infrastructure God (Gods outrank Wiz(z)ards by several degrees) I have a reel of leftover CAT5 cable (probably half a reel) and a Cisco Switch available for use if required....

I'll also have a chat with some former colleagues/suppliers and see if I can get some made up cable supplied (probably a pair of 20m cables would be good to get to the room plus several 5/10m cables for around the room would be sensible)...

PS : Was good to meet you Dobbo btw :)

@MikeSnos: Nice to meet you too.

I think the trick is for Dan to assign one of us as the LAN coordinator. The coordinator being someone who can arrive the day before to event. That person is in charge of contacting the hotel and getting the basic arrangements figured out.

I had a look in there office last time and they do have a patch panel. My guess would be that it was connected to the WiFi APs, but there maybe a line that goes close to the LAN room. Given a week or three before the event it should be possible to get something decent arranged.
